The two most functionally important roles for finding the one piece are the archaeologist and the navigator. You need the strongest crew around them to collect the poneglyphs but these two roles could be very weak fighters as long as they're the best in the world at their roles.

I think Laboon would also be a good choice as a pet. While Surume might be more durable than Laboon, Laboon is still way bigger. And another possible perk of having Laboon as your pet, is you can also get access to his pod. We saw a pod of Laboons helped the Strawhats reach the surface of the New World, so having Laboon as a pet in theory can also summon a pod of Laboons
