Its like sauron for that moment overhwlemed the camera and was staring into us the viewers
You were mostly right with the basics of the death, but there's a bit more to it. With the blade broken, you can see all the tortured souls inside of it pouring out and encircling Arthas, while Sauron takes his leave. As Arthas is occupied with the ghosts attacking him, Sauron restrains Arthas further with his flaming vortex, which also has the effect of possessing all the souls. Sauron uses them to tear Arthas' soul apart, before finally sucking the last sliver of it into the ring, leaving Arthas' empty husk of a body to fall to the ground. Arthas being distracted by the souls after Frostmourne shatters is also what leads to his death in WoW.

the only problem i have with that is only holy weapons like the ashbringer could shatter frostmourne. saurons mace is definitely not that. plus he left his maiar self behind a long time ago. im not complaining about the victor im just saying that bit shouldn't have happened.

@@thanoseid2883 Nice NLF. Guess the One Ring can only be destroyed by Mount Doom, and thus Sauron can never die in this fight with that logic. Also, Sauron has broken enchanted swords powerful enough to harm him before, so saying he can’t do that here because of a Ganondorf level argument is weird. Sauron has also always been a Maiar, I literally do not understand where you’re getting that from.

@@thanoseid2883Death Battle portrays both characters as composites of every advantage they've ever had. The primary example of this to me is Snake vs. Sam Fisher, where Snake is in the prime of his youth but has the Solid Eye and OctoCamo, both technologies that wouldn't be invented until he had begun to rapidly age and degenerate. Thus this Sauron *would* still have all the power he had as a Maia.

@@stalememes6162When Eru struck Sauron down, he became a metaphorical husk of his former self. He could no longer freely change his form, meaning no more jumping between physical body and spirit, and also no more going incognito to deceive everyone. This greatly debilitated him and he was no longer truly a Maia...but it doesn't matter for this Death Battle, which adapts Sauron from his peak of power.

Counter Argument, my reaction to Jason VS. Michael's reveal
I didn't expect this Death Battle to be the most cinematic thing I have ever seen. The music and fight it like I'm watching a movie!
That shot of sauron blowing up the mountain is one of the sickest things in death battle
That volcano shot is fucking beautiful. By far my favorite part of the episode. The eye flashing when Sauron destroys Frostmourne is also so insanely good.
"There is no life in the void, only death" and "You will find nothing there" are two of the most badass lines every delivered on the show. Glad to see one of my favorite childhood book series LOTR get a stellar episode for a great MU!
The community might not have known who Sauron was when this was teased but damn did this episode do a good job of showing them who the fuck he is. Sauron is the original Dark Lord and he got exactly the amount of presence he deserved in this fight.
One of the biggest reasons this was the most exciting episode all year for me was because it gave me a feeling for a DB episode I haven’t felt since Mob vs Tatsumaki: Excitement over getting to learn about characters I knew nothing about For these two weeks I watched clips of both, I watched Sauron’s video game appearances and read some of his best moments in The Silmarillion, I watched every Arthas comic and multiple raid boss videos of him, I read several character analysis of both, etc. Throughout those two weeks I grew to really like both characters, with Arthas in particular being one of my favorite characters all season This episode had so much hype to live up to, and it delivered even more from what I ever could have wanted. It’s my 2nd favorite 3D episode ever and one of my new all time favorites
"I've been looking forward to this." -Count Dooku
This is, without a doubt, my favorite episode of the entire season. They dropped a ton of bangers this season, even my least favorites at least being passable, and I didn't expect them to top Tanjojo. But... they did it. They fucking DID IT. LotR is one of my favorite series of all time, and I've admittedly been kind of dreading its inevitable inclusion in the show. But they did it so, so well. Everything that I could say about the animation has already been said in the review itself, but to be honest, there's one thing that really stood out to me: how respectfully they introduced both series. It was very, very focused on giving both characters and their worlds their dues. Sure, there was a quip about Arthas's name, but aside from that it was all genuine respect. They wanted us to feel the power these characters have and the darkness they imposed over their worlds, and they succeeded. Something that especially stood out to me about that is... there's no shitty forced memes. No quips about second breakfasts, walking into mordor, leeroy jenkins, or shit like that. They've made that mistake before with things like Jotaro's infamous jojoke analysis, but they didn't repeat it here. They knew that bringing these series on was a huge deal for the show, and they pulled out all the stops, and they succeeded. In all honesty, it's probably breaking into my top 5 of the show. God, I love season 9 so much.
I feel like the best word to describe this episode is *raw.* I have trouble trying to think of any other adjective to describe the energy that the entire episode conveys.
Unsure if this has been mentioned, but I think Arthas's eye is supposed to be the Eye of Acherus, an artefact that's used to analyse entities. So when he summons it, he's not just trying to match the Eye of Sauron but also to figure out what exactly he's up against.

I wouldn't be surpised if the eye just started freaking out trying to figure what the hell it's looking at
This is my Madara vs Aizen of this season. What I mean by that is that this is an episode that contained 2 characters from a franchise that I have no interest or attachment to that I thoroughly enjoyed from the analysis and the fight. 9/10 episode.

No interest in lord of the rings 😢 jokes aside glad you liked it hope it gets more people interested in maybe not the story but one of the coolest yet foolish villains in media
Sauron took control of the souls that were sealed inside of Frostmourne and turned them against the Lich King when he broke it. This is why he said “Impossible” the way he did. He recognized the souls that he once controlled. And then Sauron used his new power and just took Artha’s soul.
I liked the part of the battle where the Lich King said “It’s Liching time” and then tries to Lich on Sauron but then he dies

TRIES TO LICH WHAT 🤨
This episode used big and slow enemies better than Jason vs Michael
As a major Tolkein lover I adored this episode and was on the floor laughing at the Sauron cutaway. Boomstick eating the ring came out of left field and I lost it.
I think the even more impressive thing is that, when you stop and think about what they do and say in context, it MAKES EVEN MORE SENSE. Like, Sauron turns into his eye, and the Litch King summons a big eye in response? Looks very cool… But then it goes deeper. Sauron realises that Arthus is ACTUALLY a threat to his physical body, so discards it with vitriol because he’s now insulted, and in an attempt to get back at him, tries to show the Litch King his own demise in a “prophecy”. In response, the Lich King, now uncertain as to who he’s actually facing and what they’re capable of since Sauron just shrugged off his curse of undeath, pulls out the Eye of Acherus to try and discern what he’s looking at, then essentially calls cap on what Sauron is saying and fucking finds out when Sauron proves that what he was showing Arthus was no mere brag. It LOOKS cool, and narratively it makes sense both from an in-character standpoint and serving as a “oh shit these two just got serious” moment before the final clash. SUCH a good episode - I have a passing knowledge of LOTR and I really don’t know anything about WOW, but goddam they’ve just really done their diligence this season to adhere to the character’s themselves recently and it’s REALLY paid off. Even the ending, while not as gory or brutal as some others, is just perfect for these two. I really hope they keep this up going forwards… Though uh… I’m sorta anime only for Deku vs Asta, so I guess I’ll have to wait and see what they do next since I can’t really watch this in case of spoilers lol
This episode was an easy 10/10 for me which is super impressive since I had no stakes in either character going in. It was so fricken great
Love the reviews. Keep up the good work
Every scene from Lich King bringing the plague in Sauron's body till the end is genuinely perfect holy fuck. Easily my favorite episode of the season, everything here is just fantastic in it's visuals, atmosphere, and dialogue. Some of the lines here are so scary in it's delivery (that final line by Sauron, gees) it makes this episode feel like the real Halloween special. 10/10 stuff, I'm so happy one of my favorite villains in film got such a good episode
Another thing I love about the color clashing at 5:06 is the sense of scale it gives. It feels like the world; from the ground to the sky, is literally being split in two from Sauron and the lich king trading blows. This whole episode is badass.
This episode made me get off my ass and watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so I've gotta give it credit for that.
This is easily my favorite episode and track of the season, there's nothing I hate about it or even mildly dislike, seeing Sauron actually brought in and then win was so good, and just everything about made me happy, I wish I could feel the same way about other antagonists I love like Ganondorf but their episodes either are just bad or have too many issues for me to enjoy them in any meaningful manner (or they lost when I know they shouldn't but oh well), Dio vs Alucard is the hard exception, both Dio and Sauron came in HARD with 10/10 episodes, you love to see it.
I had little to no knowledge of either character going into this episode and it ended up being one of my favorites this Season
Hope everything is ok, biff. I love watching your reviews and all your videos and always laugh at ur funnies
This episode has done nothing but get better for me overtime
Ok. So this episode is absolutely stunning. Probably the best non Torrian 3D episode of the show, next to Ganondorf vs Dracula. It’s all so cool and raw and beautiful. The visuals are stunning. The dialogue is pitch perfect. The action is just right. In any other season, this would easily sweep. The only reason it hasn’t swelled this one is that it it is competing with one of the best written episodes ever (Magneto vs Tetsuo), one of the most hype episodes ever (Trunks vs Silver aka Silver sweep) and the actual cure for depression (SpongeBob vs Aquaman(and I am only half joking)). This season is that good. But this is easily the best 3D episode, and one of my favorite ever. 10/10, adore it.
“Didn’t Bowser start his episode on a throne” I mean so did Dracula and Shao Khan
It’s what I like to call Distance Quality. Things done so well that even if you don’t personally love it, you can respect it and see the quality it has even at that distance. It isn’t Dio vs alucard or goku black vs reverse flash fights, but was a fantastic fight. The analysis was nice. On par with michael vs Jason. Not funny per say but as you said, grand. They were realistically grand. It’s hard to be grand and not over or under sell it like thanos vs darkseid. They struck the right amount of power to show them as
Personally this is one of my favourites, not just this season, but in general, then again I have a love for both characters. I'm so happy how it came out
This is easily one of my favorites for this season by a landslide. And sense I was binge watching the entire lord of the rings when this was announced I was pretty hyped.
Fun Fact: If you pause right when the Eye of Sauron flashes when he destroys Frostmourne, you'll see Columbo in the pupil.
This fight was cool as hell!
Fire and Ice shall be his Throne, A Furnace of War shall be his Domain, The Frozen Plains shall be his Blade, The Army of the Dead shall be his Mace and a Crown of Blue shall be his foes bane, And in One Ring shall he find what Remains and in One Ring Dominate all.
bro the next time causing nautical noncesense good episode it was pretty, liking it more as time passes
This would've been the perfect time to put PopularMMOs on the thumbnail for Lich King lol
God this episode rules. The analyses were great, the fight was sick as hell, and the track goes insanely hard. I think it dethrones Spongebob vs Aquaman as my favorite episode of the season. Oh and Deku vs Asta exists i guess
you mentioned flaws about the episode? Jeez why do you hate it you nitpicker
Forget Charlie Brown we got the Biff Weed Thanksgiving special
I’m surprised yet very pleased that this has topped Bond/Wick, the one with a personal connection to me and my history with versus, as my favorite 3D episode of the season, and is just barely behind Omnilander in 3rd. My GOD this was gorgeous.
Sauron vs Lich King is easily the best blender episode and in my top 3 of the season for sure. The analysis was fantastic and as someone who has a huge personal attachment to Lord of the Rings, it was amazing seeing it covered on the channel. The fight itself was incredible. The animation looks amazing with some of the best shots in the series such as Sauron erupting the volcano and the shot of Lich King's giant blue eye against the Eye of Sauron. The contrast of blue and orange was really cool and the episode as a whole has some of the best cinematography in the whole series. The sound design is also yet another indicator that the season 7 days are over and not only do the sprite fights have great sprites, but the sound design for the series is back to being great. The voice acting and dialogue are also absolutely on-point throughout the episode, and the music goes hard. Overall this episode is amazing and easily gets a 9.5/10. I'm not hyped for the next episode, but I'm still looking forward to it and I hope it's good. The finale reveal though is what I'm most looking forward to.

Sauron should've yelled "Shazoo!" before he blew up the mountain just saying. Great episode tho, sauron was made of metal like metal mario
i tougth sauron subjugated all the souls in the frostmorne includong arthas and then absorbed them. Considering how they turn from blue to orange.
i think this is in my top 5 eps of all time, and that’s saying something because these characters histories is the extent i know about their respective series.
So glad the episode turned out this well, probably my favourite of the season currently. Still don't know who Sauron is though.
I remember biff saying that snake vs sam was his favourite episode even though he had no interest in the characters and I didn’t get that personally until now because every episode I hold In high regard has a character I like one punch man vs popeye I like one punch man lex vs iron man I love iron man and omni man vs homelander and I’m obsessed with both franchises hell I even love Jason vs Michael bc of the characters until although that’s probably blind love because of the characters used but this episode. But this episode it has 2 characters I couldn’t care less about the only positive thing I could say about them is salrons armour looks incredible but I’d give the episode a 9/10 even though I couldn’t give one about the characters.
Honestly This is the best looking death battle we've ever had and I'm not being sarcastic or over playing that statement What a beautiful goddamn episode
Yeah. I’ll admit I wasn’t hyped for the fight but this blew all of my expectations out of the water. 9.5/10. Also, I called the next time and I’m so excited for it (especially since I’ve been keeping up with both series’ manga) even if it’s a stomp for Asta.
yeah honestly it was kind of expecting Warcraft matchup for quite some time now actually it was on old all death battle is from a while ago and this is one of the ones I was looking forward to as for the next matchup, I don't really care I just want to watch it fun matchup
Next time on death battle. Chainsaw man vs carnage. Chainsaw man vs marvel
This episode made me more interested in Warcraft lore than the entire Warcraft movie (not that it was bad but it just don't hold a candel).
This is amazing honestly, it shows how good the 3d crew can get with the right battle. Also the anime fans are gonna lose there shit either way, especially if deku loses.
This is probably the best direction they could’ve taken for a matchup like this and they knocked it out of the park. Really great episode all around. I think Deku vs Asta is an infinitely better matchup than Deku vs Gon and I don’t understand why people are complaining. I watched HxH and there was no point where I looked at Gon and was like: “yeah this would be a good matchup for Deku.” They share basically no similarities except similar color schemes and I *guess* similar powers if you squint hard enough. Trust me I’d love to see Gon on Death Battle, just not against Deku. I am excited to see Black Clover on the show though, even though I know nothing about Asta and care nothing for Deku.
Hey, Biff Weed, did you get into Lord of the Rings after this episode or did you just skip the franchise?

Ok, regarding the next matchup, i never even knew that Deku VS Asta was a thing, and from what I've seen personally, not that many people seemed to expect it either, but then again, i'm not that invested in Death Battle or its community, so what do i know. I only thought Deku VS Gon and Asta VS Meliodas were moreso a thing.
I'm glad Saffron won, I like Ditch king's design more but I like them both
as a black clover fan, happy for Asta. he should win, and we all know episode quality is decided by if your preferred character wins.

Where Tai Lung in the TN tho

They just revealed the last one in the manga apparently. He’s had the rest of them for a while now.
I think I'm in the minority when I feel that Kamala or Miles returning to Deathbattle would've been preferred as the matchup for deku imho.
I think people were going to complain about the Deku matchups regardless because isn't almost all of Deku's fights stomps?

I personally hate Deku vs Gon (it was in my top 5 least wanted due to how its connections range from blatantly wrong to super surface level/it only existed because both characters shared green aesthetics and people wanted a Gon MU) and am very happy it didn't happen but it was by far the most popular Deku MU. While the VS community crying that it didn't happen is funny, I would not say it is hypocritical. There were far more Deku vs Gon fans than there were people who had problems with the MU for the past year or so from what I've seen.
