Death and Dying

Paul wrote his second letter to Timothy with urgency because he understood that his death was near, and His foremost concern remained the preaching of the Gospel. Facing the reality of death, Paul recognized that his life had not been wasted, but was being poured out for God. This calm and direct approach to death contrasts greatly with our contemporary culture. In this message Alistair Begg encourages us to consider that judgment follows death and to trust in Christ’s offer of salvation as we face our own mortality.

My Dad died last May and my Mom is currently on hospice. Thank you for this message, Alistair. It will help me in the coming months as I care for my mother. I was raised by wonderful Christian parents whom I have tried to care for the best I can during their last days. Without the Bible, I would have been lost. Praise God for the hope that we have within us!!!

+David Leone' the concept of death to us is often a concept of ending. Our souls will not have an 'end' per se. The second death as described in Revelation is the separation from God. Death also was used to describe the relationship between God and man when man sinned, that we were 'dead in our sins and trespasses'. Were we actually 'dead' in the sense of a stopped heart? No. Death is used in two ways, meaning bodily death, and separation from God, who is the source of life. Could God 'kill' the soul (or end the existence of a soul)? Of course; He can do all things. However, He's made it apparent in His Word that there are two places where the souls of men will go: Heaven and Hell. In these two places, it doesn't seem that the soul will be destroyed, according to Revelation 14:11 and 2 Thessalonians 1:9.

+MrPs103 God says...Gen 2:17 "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Satan says... Gen 3:4 "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die"... who do you sound like...?

David Leone' sir, I'd ask you for the rest of this conversation, if it continues past now, to read my comments in their entirety and not make knee-jerk reactions (James 1:19 for reference). I did not say that there would be no death. What came from the first sin, and still continues today, were two forms of death: separation from God and physical death. The Word matches up with this, and supports one type of death being a separation from God (reread my first statement for reference verses).

There are two deaths.... 1st... death in this life 2nd ... death at the Judgment after the 1000years at the 2nd resurrection. Those are the ONLY deaths that are separated.

David Leone' From my reading, it seems Paul would disagree. Ephesians 2 disagrees with that statement. Romans 6 also makes reference to being dead. Colossians 2 also tells a different story. There's a recurring theme in those, talking about being 'dead' to sin, and 'killing' the flesh. Does it actually mean killing? Or does it mean to be completely separated from it and have nothing to do with it? The Bible also coincides this idea with being alive in Christ. Were we physically dead before coming to Christ? No. Were we already judged and sent to the second death, but somehow Christ brought us back? No. What the Bible says through and through is that we were enemies of God, loving the darkness and hating the light. We had physical life, but were spiritually dead because we were actively refusing and rebelling against God, wanting nothing to do with Him. By His Grace, He made us 'alive' in Him by covering our sin, imparting to us His righteousness, so that we could be back in right relationship with Him, which is the abundant life.

'Souls neither die nor sleep', really? Eze 18:4, 20 the soul that sinneth, it shall die. ... The soul that sinneth, it shall die. Psa 13:3 lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.. Do I need to go on? Do you see that this Pastor quotes a Creed and not the Scriptures?
