Dear Theodosia but both verses are sung simultaneously
A duet with counter-melody - starts a bit disjointed and then weaves together more and more.
Edit, December 9th, 2023: Because this is on my weird alt account, I didn't see that this had 40k views until the video was recommended to me on my main account! Glad that folks enjoy it.
I made this just for myself because I was curious what it would sound like, then posted it when I found it on my computer a year or so later.
I only found out after the fact that Hamilton and Burr sang the song like this in previews, but it makes a lot of sense!

Their children make them change their worldview. For a second, all that matters for Hamilton is to stop and be with his son, and at the same time, Theodosia makes Burr not be afraid to live and wants to keep going. And that’s paralelled and consolidated in the world was wide enough. Burr shoots so Theodosia won't be alone, not throwing away his shot. Hamilton waits for it, wishing to just stop and be with his son forever.

The way I'm hearing peoples' edits of the original song, they were meant to sing their verses alone and then sing them again at the same time resulting in this version as the second verse then continue to the rest of the song, so maybe that's what Lin meant when he said they cut it for time. Regardless, I'm impressed someone stitched this together long before Lin posted about it.

It would've made it very difficult to understand both verses in a single viewing. Maybe if they'd done it like in Farmer Refuted...
coming back now that i realized why the start put me off; for the first time in this whole musical, burr is singing _faster_ than alex. really reflects how their character foils flip because their motivations changed. now the goal is give the world to their children, and that means very different things to them.
“mom why did you name my sister Tulip?” “because your father and i love tulips” “oh ok, thanks” “you’re welcome, *Dear Theodosia but both verses are sung simultaneously*”

I think the reason they decided not to do it like this is because it's a poignant part of their journey, they're at crossroads before they start drifting in their opposite directions, also allows us to connect more with the antagonist.
@raynorrobinson2569
6 ай бұрын
Burr is not the antagonist. There is no real antagonist after the revolution. Burr is just Hamilton's foil: largely similar characters with ONE major difference in character traits that make a world of difference. Hamilton lives "like he's running out of time" while Burr is willing to "wait for it." Hence, these phrases being motifs that are repeated throughout the musical. Every other difference in behavior between these two stem from these divergent motivations.

Very nicely made. Makes me think of Farmer Refuted, love the counterpoint there. One small point of critique though, the levels are a bit off, Burr's verse seems way quieter than Alexander's.

EUTHANASIA BY WILL WOOD
Honestly, I'm more glad that we got what we got. To me, letting all the stuff around them put to a pause and giving themselves a moment to breathe and appreciate that their child had just been born and this is the most important thing in the world to them at the moment should be given attention to. They're not at odd each other, so no quippy lines or snarky retorts. Just two men looking back on what they've experienced in the past, and turning onto the future with hope; thus both Burr and Hamilton getting to sing about their children equally. Plus the duet. It's the only time they do (except for Your Obedient Servant, I think), and in the context of this song, they're finding common ground and relating to one another. With them overlapping like this, it feels messy and like they're tryna one-up each other again, so even though that "When you smile" harmonization, and the "And I thought I was so smart" lines together just hits our brains differently, the finalized version is, imo, still the better one lol.

I love the symbolism of the song on how becoming a parent changes you. Burr always wants to be more than he is like Hamilton and it's like a switch changes him and he pushes himself to take that step and he's singing fast and snappy like Hamilton, not slow and calculated like normal, and Hamilton finally takes a breath and sees his world slow down because he has loved his life not knowing if he would make it past 20 and he writes like he's running out of time and makes fast and rash decisions, but when he becomes a father it's no longer about him and he finally takes a moment to slow down for his son
I love this but, I understand why he kept them separate. The final version allows a space for both of them to share their love for their child and then show their similarities by singing together. Imagine what it’s like for the people hearing this for the first time. It would be a little overwhelming to hear two melodies and pick apart what the song is conveying. It’s giving more background on Burr without distractions. Allowing the audience to take in the information with issues. ❤❤❤

I love how in this song Hamilton and Burr’s personality got switched. Burr can’t stop talking about his daughter, whereas Hamilton is speechless.
The reason I love Hamilton so much is because of the way things overlap at times. I like music that blocks everything else out (probably why Non-stop is one of my favorites) and Lin-Manuel Miranda does it so well. I almost wish the song was actually sung like this, but it would need a little bit of tweaking in the beginning parts lol
