I didn't like the merchandise, but I loved the album, the concept, the shows, everything. People just need to accept that she changed (and she need to be more realistic with merchandise quality, the older ones were way more well made.)

well, she's healthier and happier. i went to her trilogy tour and felt HEALED by her aura and her performance of songs from all her albums. she's learning who she really wants to be with her new identity, and has even began to show her face again after escaping a dark place in her early career. i want her to just continue to do what makes her feel happy and still support her.

Yes, she is so much happier and visibly healthier… I don’t understand why people are hating on her. They are not true fans. Also omg yesss the concert was SO healing, I can’t even explain the energy of that show. It was life changing. Artists usually perform their best hits from the past even if they're currently promoting a new album, albums usually aren't an hour long so one album won't last you for a whole concert, thats why I think they were expecting few other songs, if that's what you're talking about if not then just ignore my comment 😅

She’s allowed to make changes to her artistic direction and I’m allowed to not like it. Her crybaby and k-12 era albums were iconic and I’ll continue to listen to them. She’ll lose some fans with these changes but she gain some new ones too. I’m not bothered.

Lowkey this is what Doja went through too. They were both always weird but the perfect storm of trends and social media (for Doja it’s TikTok and for Melanie it’s the Tumblr era) garnered them a fanbase that I don’t think they ever really wanted. Doja is more than a 15 second dance, and Melanie is more than an aesthetic for your mood board. TLDR: These are people with stories to tell. They don’t make things for YOU to consume

There were hints in K-12 and Melanie even confirmed she planned for portals even in the crybaby era. There was one scene after nurses office where Lilith appeared and Lilith told crybaby “you had many bodies before this and you’ll continue to have more, you are immortal” Even I noticed this before portals even got released.

I hate when people complain about melanie changing. If you don't like it then don't watch it or listen to it and grow up like an adult.

Definitely. No one's forcing anyone to listen to anything. They don't have to listen to Portals or buy newer merch. Even _my_ favourite album is K-12. Everyone has their own opinion.

She's thrown me off and I've been her fan since Cry Baby. BUT I always respected how powerful her message continued to be and even if I didn't like the visuals personally, I still appreciated the concept and character immensely. Because if you are really an art's person you would NEVER like stagnation, songs would feel empty and you'd just be disappointed. With your video I was able to understand what Melanie has gone through and it really warms my heart to hear someone love and protect Melanie not only as an artist but also as a girl. Thank you very much and I can't wait for next girl icon analysis!

As someone that has loved Melanie since middle school and turning 26 next month I just want to say how fulfilling its been to watch Melanie grow not only in her visuals as her character but also as a person. I wouldn't be the person I am without the Cry Baby album but for me PORTALS is just iconic. I love all of the spiritual symbolism, it just feels very powerful for me and I think its the perfect way to end her story as Cry Baby

If half of your tour is performing your 'greatest hits', you are generally considered either one of the GOATs or a one-hit wonder. MM's too young for the former, she ain't an Elton John, but she could conceivably be a Tiffany. It's just marketing. If the new material doesn't sell, pad it out with what did. Whatever puts butts in seats.

Exactly. It’s the opposite of boring I think ppl aren’t growing alongside Melanie so they just don’t get it. So many other artists have her old aesthetics, so that “boring” thing doesn’t hold up. I've never been a fan of her music but knowing now that she's been making all here videos is indicative of the passion she had for her craft. This is just another step in her creative vision she has for herself, im sure there will be another phase added on later in her life as she continues to grow

I’m going to her concert this weekend I’m so excited. Listening to her art and watching her film seriously helped me with hard times and she is so creative. I love how her albums actually follow a character and storyline and people need to learn that artists grow and change just like us too. Exactly for me this might be her magnum opus. I cried listening to each song bc the meanings were exactly what I was searching for at that time in my life. They’re so political it’s beautiful. And when powder and Milk of the siren came out i was 10x as bad lol. as a melanie fan who adores the portals era, part of me is still left wondering if this massive rebrand was already thought out or there were other plans for the trilogy when she first made it. i understand why she did what she did of course, but it being so drastic seems like a weird way to have planned it out 8 years ago when she was still in tune with the era. she could've and that's honestly really smart for her, but the natural life progression from crybaby to k12 and then killing her off young in the next album seems more of a decision that was made after k12 and her realizing that she didn't resonate with the old eras as much, but idk.

I honestly think the Portals era wasn’t that surprising. Crybaby’s whole story has been about progression and growth so it makes sense that crybaby would progress through life and into death and beyond (not to mention the hints about multiple lives in the K-12 film)

I don’t get it, like, guys, have you listened to MILK OF A SIREN, CONTROPONIST oder SPIDER WEB? Those song are amazing. The whole album is amazing

The Contortionist, Void, Death, Womb and Milk Of A Siren hit different to me. I am not gonna lie though, I liked her past aesthetic more, it seemed visually more appealing to me, but I've never hated on her change and growth to a new persona, because let's be honest, artists are not robots and they, eventually, change and/or grow out of their "phases". 💗

(The concert was amazing btw). Honestly, portals surprised me mostly because she had been gone for so long. I was a bit hesitant to listen to her new music but when I did hear the new portals album I remembered why I enjoyed her music. All of Melanie’s songs are multidimensional with layered meanings. If she really did rebrand herself I feel she would have moved away from this style entirely.

@@sarahrean7174but at the same time if you can’t afford it, there’s no need to be an asshole online, I wasn’t able to get tickets because the resale prices are crazy af rn, but not for that reason and marketing I’ll be hating on what the artist does… that behavior is just weird as fuck, you can disagree with what they’re doing, but being hateful just because of that is just chronically online behavior…

When people are hating on portals. I’m questioning they need to listen to The contortionist, Nymphology, light shower, BOTL, powder and spider web which this song literally is giving me the K-12 era.

Of course it has an aesthetic and vibe, and songs that transition smoothly into others and across the entire album create a sense of familiarity and comfort, which is especially important for the album's goal of creating music that helps you overcome your traumas and create a safe environment, there's no such a thing of "all have the same melody, same noises" ...

I don't know how it is for others, but for me the biggest diconnect between Melanie's eras is that Cry Baby/K-12's visuals are still rooted in reality, inspired by horrors you can find in everyday life, but Portals is FULL sci-fi. I understand and respect that Melanie always planned for this, and I do enjoy the visuals of Portals a lot, but the jump is so drastic it feels jarring. I would never guess Portals is a story continuation from a brief lookover. I don't think this would have been impossible to pull off, either K-12 would need to have been greatly adjusted, or for there to be another album to act as a bridge between K-12 and Portals. Ironically I think the mini album After School kinda fit that vibe in sound and style. That doesn't make it bad, just a bumpy transistion.

This is her best era honestly. It’s refreshing to see an artist so dedicated to the arts .. everything is so fast that people have a hard time adjusting to music that you don’t like on the first listen .. it’s a weird shift to watch happen

Her new album and Death came out around the same time my sons father passed away...it made a huge impact on me. Also absolutely love the astethic of it, right down my alley. I just dnt agree with her selling cheap bullshit to her fans, that...she can keep

portals is literally her best album and era. ive been a fan since 2018. idk what yall are on but the music and visuals are by far her best and most meaningful and creative in this era out of anything else shes ever done. and melanies my favorite artist of all time.

Personally as a long term fan, portals is not my favorite but it still is a good album. The nymph/fairy look is different but understandable. The main reason of her change in appearance comes from the judgment of society. When she first reappeared again in to the public eye before portals released so many people where asking about if she gained weight. So of course she wanted to not show off her body since people where making her feel bad.

wonderful video, love the deep dive, fame is highly overestimated and can lead to tremendous consequences on the people experiencing it.

my fav concert of hers was the show and tell one her step was everything and im sooo proud of her

I recently went to her trilogy tour, it was so amazing 😭 And honestly seeing her craft live made the Portals aesthetic make so much more sense to me. Her new visuals didn't 100% click in my head at first (the music itself always stayed strong for me though), but seeing the whole story put together and alive just made it amazing. They've always been a big inspiration for me, and they're still just as cool to me!!

Taylor swift is re-recording her stolen albums from up to 15 years ago so that people can enjoy them and she still performs those songs on tour to this day, is it really that hard for Melanie to perform songs from 5 years ago??

Personally as long as she loves what she dose I’m just happy to support her. And being in the spot light for so long is very hard. I don’t know her personally at all all I know is since day one her music spoke to me and still dose 💗💗💗

6:55 when I was in grade 5-6 I was heavily bullied. (Around 2021) , for being red headed, fat, etc. I really had no where to go. I Stumbled across Melanie while listening to sings on shuffle and it was recommended. Dollhouse. I started to play more and became obsessed. I absolutely love her k-12 and crybaby era. I stepped away from Melanie for a bit and came back to her portals. Don’t get me wrong , I absolutely love “ EVIL” and “VOID” but I will never be able to forget drama club, lunchbox friends, high school sweethearts , pacify her, dollhouse and orange juice. They are dug into my brain.

i think the people who are angry about the change forgot who melanie martinez was. melanie martinez isnt someone who remains the same, and for lack of a better word, she was never boring. she was never going to stay with one theme for a long time, im kinda shocked people thought that lol. even if there are some things i dont like that shes done, this new look is AWESOME, and not unexpected in my opinion.

Love this vid I have the new tour tickets and I’m so so exited for my inner child who used to love mel, I see it as a performance art of growing up and as I’ve grown along side her it’s going to be so full circle hearing her perform all these songs I used to relate to, knowing we are both grown since then. It’s magical fr. We’re lucky to have artists like this who care so much about their art, I wish we would cut them more slack for taking big risks. It’s what we love them for after all

This is such a good video! I loved the crybaby era, but the switch to portals was so sharp though that it took me some time to love the new album. Its one of my favorite albums now.

I actually fell deep in love with her new album when it first came out cuz I had literally been changing to it seemed like we were growing with each other my style used to be baby core then I liked indie and kid core then I liked fairy core and she posted that she was coming out with a new album and it looked like my aesthetic when she released death I literally cried cuz I was getting into rock styled music it was just perfect portals is my second fav album crybaby is first because of all the memories but portals it’s really important to me cuz it was the first time I felt a connection between me and mel.
