Dean was very smart here. He had just broken up with Jerry and it was right before his personal stardom had taken off making him a legend. Up until the success of the young lions he was very nervous about going it alone. He was kind to Jerry as to not burning any bridges. Once it all took off for him he never discussed Jerry and never had him on the dean Martin show whereas every star in Hollywood appeared through the closet after jumping down from the piano. Class act. Never bashed Jerry. Dean is still my idol. I’m 62 and have loved him since I was 12.

The Young Lions was, in fact, representative of a successful transition to dramatic roles for Martin, which continued with Some Came Running and Rio Bravo. His career continued to grow stronger, while Lewis, who peaked with The Nutty Professor, began to experience a decline after the mid sixties as public taste changed. By the mid sixties, Martin was arguably the most successful entertainer in show business next to Sinatra.

No, the myth of 20 years without speaking is deliberately carried on by both Dean and Jerry. In recent years it is being discovered that they actually saw each other publicly a dozen times before the 1976 Telethon. They never really cut off contact with each other. They never deleted their respective phone numbers. When Dean Jerry's father died he went to him to offer condolences. Who was with them said that they kissed and hugged, always before 1976. Always before the Telethon messages were written on the mirrors of the dressing rooms with a red lipstick ... when they knew that one of the two had to perform in that particular club. I don't know why they intentionally hinted that they never spoke again until 1976.

theddiissccoo that’s true. I believe that at the time it was practically unheard of for the father to be given custody of the children, so to me that’s indicative of how bad the family situation must have become for them under Betty’s care. Deana goes into some detail about the kind of life they were living in her book, with Betty becoming increasingly unable to cope, until finally her own sister was forced to intervene and take them to Dean and Jeannie’s home after their mother just dumped all 4 of them on her and disappeared.

  • @susantunbridge4612

There was no debate about it, no custody battle. She couldn't look after them, so her sister took them to Dean's house, and there they stayed. Dean did buy his first wife a house, but she had drinking problems, so couldn't care for the kids.

WorkshopPops That’s only partially true. Although there seems to have some residual bitterness between them and they never actually socialised much after the split, there are several clips on You tube which show that they did run into each other at various events over the years. Two that come to mind are when Jerry was host at the 1959 Oscars, which Dean also attended, and Dean making a brief appearance (along with Bing Crosby) when Jerry was a guest on the Eddie Fisher Show In 1958.

Dean comes off more likable than Jerry Lewis who did a similar interview the same year. This is probably one of the few interviews he has ever did. I was also suprised he mentioned Jerry Lewis. When I was a kid in the 60s both were highly popular and I was suprised at some point when I found out they were once a comedy team. It was like a kid finding out that Paul McCartney was once a Beatle in the 70s.

Fabian Patrizio If this was 1958 i think it must have been around the time that Dean and Jeannie gained custody of his older children from his first wife Betty. Deanna tells in her book that it was at first a bit of a difficult and awkward transition for them to become used to a more settled and traditional lifestyle after the rather nomadic life they had been living with their mother. She was 9 years old when they moved in, and her siblings were already in their teens (Craig was 15 and was not able to feel comfortable with the new arrangements so soon moved back in with his maternal grandparents) After a while, thanks in no small part to Jeannie's efforts, (despite the fact that she was only in her twenties herself, and already had the three little ones of her own) they did all settle down to become part of a large happy 'blended' family. But this programme must have been made during those first awkward and uncertain months.

But in this case, he can't see them and has to rely on what he thinks he hears in their reactions while the somewhat expensive filming is happening during the scripted staging. Some of the family are listening to him the way people use to listen to the radio--with eyes up to the left or right.

westie kid I don't think that's quite fair. Yes, they had help (including also a cook and a handyman) but according to both Deana and Ricci's books, Jeannie was apparently a very 'hands on' Mother who doted on the younger children and played a big part in helping the older ones settle in after she and Dean gained custody of them. It was Jeannie who supervised and decorated the extension they had built onto the house to accommodate the older kids, helped in choosing their new school and organised for them to have tennis and riding lessons. According to Deana; "she filled our home with love and laughter, fun and games."

bunnyhop3211 I agree the whole situation was messy, and I don’t condone how Dean treated Betty because he apparently cheated on her with many chorus girls while he was on the road a lot of the time at the start of their marriage. Jeannie was certainly not the first, but she was the one he seriously fell for and chose to marry. In her book Deana gives a more detailed account of how the divorce affected Betty and set her on a downward spiral. She started to neglect the children and spent a great deal of her alimony and child support on wild parties (to the point where at times the police had to be called) and moving them from home to home and different schools. Now, obviously Dean wasn’t entirely blameless, but this wasn’t the only Hollywood marriage that ended badly, and I don’t see how he could be held responsible for the way Betty handled it. In any case, it finally came to the point where Betty dumped the kids on her sister Anne without any spare clothes or money and just disappeared for several days. It was only then that Anne, in desperation, took them to Dean and told him that he had to take responsibility. Jeannie, despite her young age and having 3 little ones of her own, agreed to take on the upbringing of the 4 older ones too and they were given legal custody at a time when it was practically unheard of for a father to be given those rights. And,according to Deana, Betty didn’t even bother to turn up to the court hearing.

There doesn’t seem to be any information about her biological father or if he ever contested custody of the child. Similarly, when Dean divorced Catherine after only 3 years of marriage, she and Sasha seem to have disappeared back into obscurity as there is no information that I have seen online about them either.

These actors are great but do you know who is greater? Jesus. He is selfless and loving. He died for everyone's sins, past, present, and future. Be careful when watching these films. We mustn't make these people our idols. Exodus 20:3-5 says "You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens on earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods." Not only that, but the end times are here. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 states "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!" This is merely to inform people, not to attack them. God bless.

MsJoybird1 I think you’re wrong about that. Two of the kids (Deana and Ricci) both wrote books about growing up with their famous father, in which they tell of how Dean often played with them as children, and how they would all spend time together as they grew up, just like any ‘normal’ family would, like having water-fights or playing football in the garden. It’s true that Dean could be something of a ladies man, but he also had a quieter side who enjoyed being at home with Jeannie and their kids, having dinner together and catching up, watching cowboy films on TV, or else playing golf with his friends.
