In Daily Life in the United States 1940-1959 (2000, p. 142) Eugenia Kaledin wrote "“A Report on Senator Joseph R. McCarthy” aired on March 9, 1954 without any promotion and no CBS logo. Murrow and Friendly used their own money to advertise the show. This brave exposure, as Stephen Whitfield remarks in The Culture of the Cold War¸ became in retrospect “the most im-portant single show in the history of television.”" Regarding Fred W. Friendly, wikipedia states that he was "a president of CBS News and the creator, along with Edward R. Murrow, of the documentary television program See It Now. He originated the concept of public-access television cable TV channels."

It's been lacking for a very long time. Ironically, Murrow was initially part of the problem. As a VP at CBS after WW2, he threw his long-time friend and journalist, William L. Shirer under the bus by replacing him on a CBS show because the corporate sponsor found Shirer to be too liberal. Shirer had warned Murrow at the time that he was emboldening corporate muscle - and other reactionary forces - and setting a dangerous precedent. Shirer warned Murrow that he could face the same fate, which Murrow did several years later.

The public is obligated to improve their critical thinking skills too. If there is no audience for authenticity and intellectual debate that media won't exist...merely lights in a box for the willfully ignorant to amuse themselves with.

You can do this with virtually every modern politician, Trump, Biden, etc... too bad their supporters would do and say pretty much anything not to take them at their word. The problem today isn't that there are no Edward R. Murrows left. The problem is that there is nobody left to listen to them.

A dull public affairs program with a small audience. It didn't matter. CBS' PR has been exaggerating its importance and influence for 70 years. Murrow waited until McCarthy had already been discredited and then decided to kick him when he was already down. He only did the show as a favor to Ike. Like Republicans today, Ike and others in the party were unwilling to stand up to McCarthy until McCarthy attacked the army and Ike, a career army man, had enough and asked Paley and Murrow, his buddies in London during the war, to help get McCarthy. Hardly anybody watched. Probably some people started and tuned out getting bored with film clips of McCarthy badly making bad speeches. If anybody deserves credit for bringing down McCarthy, it should Joseph Welch. Murrow was no more than an arrogant, self-righteous, self-promoting propagandist.

Whatever you think of Murrow you can’t argue with his integrity and presentation. He put up a mirror to McCarthy in a way no one ever had. That few people (may) have watched it live is irrelevant. Had this document not existed many many more petty McCarthy’s would have cropped up in the years after-claiming him to be a misunderstood patriot instead of the lying narcissist he was. It has lived on, giving people an opportunity to look into how corruption can exist, even in the highest institutions.
