As a photographer that does a lot of family sessions, even in 15 minute mini sessions, I use the first third/half to play with energetic kids. Red light, green light, racing, spinning, etc are great ways to get the kids to smile, you can involve the parents, and you’ll be able to get great candid shots. Then afterwards kids usually will see better.
