Dealing with Awkward and Difficult Parents | Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf

In Islam it is emphasized to respect ones parents to such an extent that there is a hadith that mentions Paradise lies beneath the feet of your mother. In this talk the speaker elaborates on the importance of the status of parents and also provides useful and practical tips on how to deal with awkward and difficult parents.

I feel most speakers when speak on this topic, they assume it is the child who is wrong in a unhealthy child and parent relationship and the entire lecture is focused on counselling the child how he can be more dutiful to their parents rather than looking at the flip side of the coin and facing the reality of the bitter situation. If you can't tell the parents that they are wrong and they should do better, stop giving lectures on this topic as there and many more things to talk about. When you criticise children even when they are abused, you are becoming a part of the problem by boosting the moral of abusive aprents and pushing the children beyond the level of despair. Abuse is abuse even if the parents do it. The parents who transgress and abuse children will not only pay for it in the here after, but should also spend their rest of the lives in prison for damaging their child psychologically.

These idiots are mad. Parents can’t do what ever they want. One mother raised three children but her second son earned a fortune so she did witchcraft black magic on him and removed his girlfriend and stopped his marriage because she didn’t want to see him giving his wealth to his wife and children. Then she takes his money and spends lavishly. He is now ill . 40 years still unmarried. Mother feels if he married money would be gone from her . Tell me viewers is this good. So should we honor that mother?

I can swear those who don’t have abusive parents never understand the pain , the loneliness, unhappiness a child bears in his/her soul. No scholar I heard appropriately tells anything so that a child can get a little peace in his mind. Always parents have the super priorities. If they told what islam says and how islam balances abusive parents and their children may be some of them may change by tha sake of Allah.

They always do this! Always. There's are a lot of parents who are narcissistic and they don't really care about the kids. They raise the kids so they can be security for them in their old age. But if the child's career doesn't work out or the child's life didn't work out as they expected, the parents don't really care. They only care about the kids who can benefit them financially or otherwise. They also abuse kids with the mentality that " we brought you into this world and we can take you out". For once I would like to hear about the rights of children and what to do with bad parents. Not every parent is a saint. This is a mislabeled video. False Advertising. Period.

My problem with some Islamic scholars, they fail to address the fact that most parents now are taking advantage of their superiority over their children to emotionally blackmail them. What I knw is before they are your parents, they are first of all human beings and therefore do not fall short of portraying their human traits and sadly these are not addressed. I think on this topic, mufti menk addressed it properly. May Allah grant us extreme patience to deal with these abusive parents.🙏

Sorry no one has the right to overcritisize others and belittle them and break peoples lives! Parents as well. It all has to do with selfishness. They are always fearful what others think about you, they take every difficulty for you which you should learn from so you can grow yourself into an independent adult. Toxic people are meant to leave. Parents or not. Free yourself and love them from a distance. You don't have to visit them 24/7 and thats okay

Most of these advices are very general and come from the assumption of normal to very moderate parent-child relationships with children. They hardly address situations of extreme abuse or even medium level of abuse. It doesnt mean those children dont have to be good to their parents either but the approach would be different and needs to be handled carefully. I heard recently from a scholar that thats what happens. Most of the time when giving fatwa they just assume its very minor abuse or the child just doesnt want to listen to good practicing parents and give very harmful advice. They are not trained to deal with severe forms of parent abuse like major beating, sexual abuse etc. The severe abuse cases are so rare they dont even go there at first when they handle a case. It leaves those children in a terrible state and feeling more alone because they keep trying to take the general advice to be good to parents like everyone else but suffering even more until burnout. Or sometimes they go to non-muslim authorities for help when they have had enough. Muslim community needs to improve on this.

I'm 25yr old now and my 60yr old father is still so overbearing and difficult. I went 3 months oversea for studies and came back only to remember how difficult and tiring he is. My father is a stroke/ diabetic patient and yet he is overbearing, like to talk down about people, made fun of my tired, working sister and never ever admit a mistake he made. My sister and I tried hard to help his health but he always doesn't seem to care and always mock the healthy food we give him. He is always indifferent to my successes and even when I entered a university, he has no reaction. Whenever someone on TV made success, he would look down on the person, trash talk and belittle the person. I am tired of this. Really, really tired. Of all the fathers in the world, why did Allah(SWT) grant me this man as my father. My father has never been a father figure in my life. In fact, I grew up and became judgmental and harsh on people because of his attitude. It took my whole teenage and early adulthood to realise this mistake and overcome it. I want out. I am out. I am tired. I want to run away and never see him again. I wish I could replace him with someone better and supportive, soft and kind but I can't. I am stuck with him forever...

He doesnt fight with me and shout with me as before because i dont give him the pleasure of replying to his negative words. I keep quiet if he asks i answer. If he says something and i say you are right he shouts at me so i nod. I am not allowed to either smile or be sad i have trained my self to look emotionless and dumb. My biggest advice to you is to practice at being emotionless and what ever he says goes dont waste time arguing about what is right you know whats right so that is all that matter. What if your parents are narcissistic and are out there to destroy your decent relationships with people, cause grief to your innocent children, humiliate you and your spouse in public, deliberately make friends with your obvious enemies and talk about you with them badly, encourage them? What if your childhood memories of them is filled with deprivation of basic needs like good medical attention, education, nutrition, safety, clothing when they clearly had the resources? When your earliest memories of them has been of violent abuse and curses of the worst kinds and wishes that you were never born when you were a toddler? What if some of their abuse has been verbally sexual as you were growing up? What fardh do you have towards them?

My dear, there are many abusive mothers. I think you need to speak to a muslim psychologist to address: 1) Allah did not say that all parents deserve love, he said respect them. It will be more difficult for you than others so you will be rewarded more than others who had normal parents. 2) Allah knows what is happening to you and there is a reason for it. It is not a punishment, it is a test. So do not feel guilty about it. Allah loves you. 3) There will be massive psychological damage done to you if the one who is supposed to love you, actually hurts you... A psychologist will help you deal and process these feelings so you grow strong and positive about ur situation. Massive child abuse always causes anxiety issues later in life. 4) The most amazing child can be born to a cruel individual, she was like that before you were born. 5) Do constant Istikhaarah (for Allah's guidance about ur living condition) and istihfaah (for Allah to make a way out for you that you have not imagined) Also, be careful as many muslims will attack you for your true story about speaking about your mother's abuse . These are the ones who have great parents and cannot imagine or understand that the opposite can exist ... their lack of understand can hurt your even more ... its empathy to situation they have not experienced that they lack... so be careful who you speak to about this. Huge hugs!!!!

I don't normally see the need to comment on videos but I feel I have an obligation to myself and kids like me who see this video and feel guilt tripped and obligated by "religion" to continue being abused by the vary people as per the Deen are put on this earth as the receiver of a gift BORROWED to you by the Almighty which you have the RESPONSIBILITY to love, nurture, protect and guide - yet that part is never expressed as the "Honor thy parents"??? - I have been struggling for 28 years with Narcissistic parents who play against and enable one another - resulting in 2 children who have no sibling relationship due to playing them up against one another and using Islam as an buffer. I am so disappointed when seeing video's, continuing gross cycles. THIS IS NOT THE DEEN. You are not OBLIGATED to honour people who stray from the path by becoming the very difficulties and hardships that you are to protect your children from. To every child like me out there, I hope you see this and know - you are ENOUGH, you are WORTHY and you are ALLOWED TO CHOOSE YOU without losing your faith. May Allah SWT protect and guide us all on our journeys. YOU ARE LOVED by your creator.

The ignorant person is the one who doesn't see the reality, I'm talking about true life stories of today, if the parents be how parents should be then yes the molvis words are correct, but as I have said before parents have changed over the course of the period. In this day and age you have parents who are doing black magic on their own children, do those parents deserve the kind of respect that this molvi is speaking about? So don't make assumptions to the level of my intellect without knowing me, you yourself have shown how ignorant you are without knowing me you are calling me ignorant. My comment was not aimed directly to this speaker alone, but what these speakers fail to do, is to balance their talks, if parents have rights then the children also have rights, if you talk about the rights of the one and not the other then you committing injustice and in islam injustice and oppression are not allowed

Nowhere in this talk has he denied the existence of those sort of deranged parents, but you have no right to expect others to treat your own bad experience as the absolute default. He is talking on a general level, he says over & over that parents can be bad, can be guilty of "heinous crimes etc. His job is to mention the command of Allah and give pointers on how to do so. And of course you had to voice your spite by hate on the ulama of the Deen of Allah. Completly unnecessary and extremely illogical.

ignore your father and stopm thinking about him, you wont most likly find what you want from him because he cares about his son more and himself, if you love someone you care about them you worry, but if you dont love him then you wont worry, why let someone make you ill with stress depression when he dosent care about you, leave him and take care of yourself, make sure you tell him what he did and how you will priotect yourself and your own future children, abuse can effect you and your children if dont take care of your well being health dont stress over him he isent stressing over you

I thought this was a video about dealing with “abusive” parents, as the title suggests, not a video about praising parents. Smh. There are parents that abuse children to the point of making them commit suicide. You don’t have to literally kill someone physically to be a bad parent, you can emotionally abuse them to the point of suicide. Some parents also steal from their kids. And when you say “except the parents in the newspapers who do “weird” things, all parents want the best for us, you fail to recognize the selfishness of so many parents, specially in Islam where parents are over praised. Respect is a 2 way street. We didn’t ask to be brought in this world, they brought us here. And majority of parents have kids to make their own lives better/happier, not for the sake of the child. Desperate abused children like myself came here for some relief, and left the video feeling more alone, more drained, more broken. 🤦‍♂️😑

Toxic parents need boundaries... atleast you know her capabilities and heart now.. so you can protect your future marriage. I wish I knew how toxic my own mother was with regard to breaking up my relationship before she spun her web of lies and manipulations. The problem is that the trouble making egotistical mothers hide behind the lofty status Allah SWT gives to the normal genuine mothers. And the new bride is always at fault..but nobody dare addresses the manipulation of the mother-in-law... bc she gave birth to a human which makes her absolute perfection... I think it was Nouman Khan who spoke about in-laws interfering in their children's marriages as their selfish ways to secure their "retirement package".

help pls; advice please, they isolated me from young, abused me mentally, physically and now all i have left is myself and their passive agression, stalking, intimidating. both parents and siblings are narcistic, im the empath, scapegoat. im really sick now, dont know what to do anymore. Ive tried distancing myself from them,i tried boundries, none of it works, the abuse and mindboggling narcistic games tend to worsen.my body is getting sick of panic attacks, cuz my parents allow my brother to stalk and intimidate me or even hit me is being put under the rug many times.
