I quit my carsalesman job 25 years ago after selling a very sweet older couple a very nicely loaded Honda Accord LX. I remember the lady loved the sage cloth seats. At the dealers desk- they signed on the first offer. Some crazy amount down and still 500+ monthly. The deal went south just a few days later. The BANK actually called us back and said NO. They would not fund them unless we put them into a nicer car. It just so happened that we had the same Honda Accord in the higher EX trim with leather. We called them back and told them we had made a mistake and hoped they liked this car better. They were both over the moon. The older man loved the moon roof, which was not offered on the LX. Soon after- I realized I could not continue to work for people like this and quit. Customers really need to be smarter going into these dealerships.

Some years ago I owned a 2003 Toyota Taco Double cab automatic 4WD and I was living in Fresno, California, I was told that in order to get my A/C working, I had to pay a Toyota dealer $200.00 just for inspection if something was wrong such as low freon and what needs to be fixed and this wouldn't go toward the repair of the A/C. I thought that was ridiculous. Then, my family and I moved to Utah, a mechanic shop owner just added freon to my 2003 Tacoma and everything was fixed just for $100.00.

Wow, the video you shared is really helpful. It's thanks to videos like these that I managed to avoid a similar situation when I first arrived in this country. The dealer tried to tack on a bunch of extra services that would have doubled the quote I got from the Toyota website. Despite all her attempts, she claimed to be giving me a discount as a welcome gesture to the country-things like extended warranty, tire insurance, maintenance, etc. In the end, I stood firm and told her to remove all those extra services, or else I'd take my business elsewhere. Thanks again for sharing such a informative and helpful video.

My wife and I recently purchased a 2024 CRV after our first 2 options flamed out. My wife wanted a CX5, I wanted a RAV4. The CX5 didn’t work for us, so our hearts were set on a RAV4. We went to 3 dealerships. We were finally able to get a test drive at the 3rd, albeit on an older hybrid version (we just wanted the base model, non hybrid). The arrogance, lack of customer service and severe mark ups pushed us to our 3rd option: Honda. There we received great customer service, a fair price and we were able to test drive the model we were interested in. I’m sorry that the Honda in AB took advantage of that couple, but our experience here in Toronto ON was the complete opposite. Toyota dealers here are the absolute scum of the earth and because of their price gouging and lack of customer service, they’ve lost customers for life.

To get the OEM financing, you need a sterling credit rating... which you don't mention at all. I remember going to the dealership to purchase a car that I liked. We had reached an agreement. Then came the bill which I read thoroughly. I asked 'what is this, what is that?' The salesman was losing his mind. I got up, walked out of the dealership. The salesman snaps 'but, we have an agreement!' I asked him to show me my signature. He knew he had his ass handed to him. I walked out, never to visit them again.

Excellent explanation, it is understandable that it is not about the brand itself, because Toyota dealers in some houses have also done it, I say this for people who have not understood that it is not the brand, it is the dealers who scam the customers. customers, legislators should allow direct sales from the manufacturer.

Happened to me twice. Once at Toyota and once at Chevy. I didn’t catch the Toyota till I got home. But once I did I called the head quarters and they called the dealership and made them remove a warranty they tacked on. Chevy tried doing the same thing without telling us. my husband and I got up and told them they just lost a sale. They insisted that we had to purchase a warranty. We walked.

HI Shari. Good job as usual on educating the public. Recently, I noticed at two dealerships cars with dual pricing. One price was advertised as cash and second as financing price. The cash price was higher. It looks like it's done with all their cars in inventory. Is this practice legal in Onntario?

It is legal if the dealer clearly discloses this in the advertising. If the listing says "finance price," the dealer can charge more for cash. I consider it an unprofessional tactic and a red flag against the dealer.

This is ridiculous. The Canadian government should do something about this. Omvic should have a list of dealerships that are known to operate in this fashion. I once leased a vehicle and when I chose to buy the car out at the end of the lease term the dealership said that their min interest rate was 9%. This was in 2022. They were even bold enough to say that I could not get a better rate. Of course u went to my bank and got a rate of 5% on a LOC. I still bought the car, because I liked it and still own it.

They already had my old CRV approximately 6 months prior as I had to order it. I kicked up a huge fuss and called Honda Canada. I wanted to pay cash and no financing. They told me after they had already sold my trade to take it or leave it. I told them to shove it and they backed off. Will never buy a car at Moncton Honda in NB. Way to go Moncton Honda to attempt to rip off your best customers.

If any industry needs a cool off period, it is the car industry. I don't believe there is only $2500 in mark up for this vehicle. I worked for a Buick dealership in 1990 part time as I was attending college and the mark up range was between $2000-$4000 depending on the model (with the sales rep getting 25% of the profit), back then when cars were much cheaper. I had access to the invoice papers, so I saw it for myself. Then you add the hold back, floor planning, etc and you have a much higher mark up on todays vehicles.

  • @stoundingresults

Only things that can go bad on a tire is the battery of the Tire Pressure monitoring system going bad in 10 years. Then you have the warning light on the dash. Or possible air leak from the tire valve, easy repair at a tire shop. Or you hit the curb and scratch the rim. As long as you buy good namebrand tires and keep the air pressure correct you should not have problems.

Useful video! However, you shouldn't advocate for higher dealer's markups. They already make profit in Canada on so-called "delivery and pdi" (compare with much lower said fee in US). Also now Toyota and perhaps others included separate charge as "dealer fees", $2000+. These are already on their website, so not likely to get rid of.

Hey I enjoyed your video. I just have one detail I would like you to think about. You seem like a very productive man that knows about money. So in my opinion if you have the money to pay cash for a car that would be the wrong thing still to do. If your interest rate is jot higher than 4 or 5%. If someone can pay cash well look at your high interest yeilding accounts which are more likely 4% and maybe 6% if maybe treasure bonds or whatever else. All I am saying is it is smarter to keep the money in those accounts accumulating interest than paying for a car cash. Do the math both ways and you will come to my same conclusion
