No, it was the speed that sealed their fate. If they had been going 40 mph….they would still be here. Don’t defend speeders. They turn our public roadways into drag strips and Nascar races.

Umm, two things can be true. First, it is the girls fault for doing that. No ifs, ands or buts. Of course on a sidenote, society is supposed to help protect minors from running their lives, because they have a habit of doing that. But the second thing, the thing it doesn’t seem you thought about, is this gonna happen when going the speed limit. And also it can kill an innocent person. So if Road conditions need to be changed to protect innocent people from reckless people, than there is nothing crazy about that.b

It's the primary reason. But leaving this road in its condition, especially with it so close to a highschool, is a major contributing factor to these reckless crashes; if the jump weren't available, no one would be trying to take it. And then there's the fact that this is a blind crest, period, and an unnecessary hazard for any driver to deal with. If the money can be raised, it should be flattened off, and the smaller crest with it.

The biggest problem is definitely the reckless driving, but it doesn't help that the "jump" is is right there by the school. And a blind crest is a hazard to any driver, and, at the least, handling that hazard correctly forces traffic to slow down significantly (which itself creates an additional rear-ending hazard).

Precisely. I live in a straight stretch, right off a main highway in a rural area. Right before you get to my house, there is a series of pretty serious curves with speed limit signs showing 35 MPH. After the curves, the speed limit goes back to 55 MPH. All night, every night, I hear cars absolutely gunning out out of those curves to reach insane speeds in the straight stretch. I've lived in this house for just over four years and there have been two fatal car crashes in the field beside me, at least one of which the passenger ejected from their vehicle. At the end of the day, someone looking for dangerous thrills can find a way make even the safest road deadly. Someone who doesn't want to drive safe can't always be protected from themselves.

Yep. I live in a similar highway in the mountains and over twenty years two have been killed and 8 crashes on a 1 mile flat stretch of road. Almost all of the crashes and both fatalities were due to speed. One was a sport bike rider doing around 130 went off the road and another in a car doing around 90 and drunk. Other crashes had speed involved some were elk in the road and people driving to fast to stop

@@alanluscombe8a553 It's the deer where I live. I originally typed some info about that too, but it made my comment really long. Especially at night, I drive no more than 40MPH in the straight stretch in front of my house because I know how common deer are out here. I have picked two bumpers and parts of wheels and tires up out of my driveway several times over the past few years after people hit a deer at high speed. One night, not long after moving here, a family of five showed up at my front door in the middle of the night because they'd slammed into a deer and absolutely destroyed their car. This one little ~1/2 mile section of the road has no cell signal at all and very few houses. They were lucky that they crashed directly in front of my driveway, so they were able to limp their car up to my house and ask for help. I really, really wish people would just slow down on the roads. When I get in a hurry, I remind myself that driving even 10 MPH faster isn't going to save me more than a few seconds unless I'm travelling a pretty good distance. It just isn't worth it. I also watch car crash videos every few months, just to keep myself in check and to remind me that safety is more important than speed and fun. I never want to have some poor person scraping pieces of me out of my car or off the side of the road, all because I was in a hurry or was on my cell phone or speeding.

We had a country road everyone dubbed Roller Coaster Hills that had three small hills right after the other. Stupid teens always tried to make the jumps and go airborne. I was one of the stupid teen passengers on several occasions. Turning off your headlights was an added attraction. There were several deaths. One was my cousin's step-son. Didn't stop anybody. Ft. I live in a small rural country area and we had lots of roads with places in them that were dangerous, and teens who are together in a car are notorious for taking silly “challenges”. It’s a wonder we didn’t have more tragedies back in the 80’s and 90’s on those roads. Most of the roads have been fixed now, the State came in and redesigned the roads so that the dangerous areas were made less dangerous. Extremely sharp curves were straightened out. Steep hills were eliminated. But when crashes occurred on these roads before they were fixed, almost always high speed was a factor. The driver going 100 mph was the cause of this crash, because the high speed combined with her jerking the steering wheel towards the ditch caused her to lose control and crash. If she had been going the speed limit, she never would have met that car at the top of the wheel, jerked the steering wheel, and lost control. I’m sorry to the parents who lost their daughter, and to the teen driver who has to live with the fact that she crashed a car and lost her best friend. I pray the LORD eases the parents’ grief, and helps the driver learn a lesson, and forgive herself, because He will forgive her if she asks Him to, but it’s much more difficult to forgive yourself.

Here in South Jersey, we had a similar road. Literally, the road is named Breakneck Road. Teenagers (including myself) would speed down that road. One end was "humps" you could get "air time" from and a HUGE hill. Again, almost no shoulders and trees growing right up at the road's edge. They did finally smooth out the humps, but the main hill is still there. They did it back in the early 1990's.
