Dead Poets Society: Right after Neil's suicide

Фильм және анимация

Distraught by his father's inability to see his dreams, the passion in his eyes and nerving up his adolescent strength and idealism Neil turns to what he thinks is Vindication: Killing himself.
The scenes here show what he meant to his friends.

    Knowing that Todd is the most sensitive and fragile of the group, I like the way the group of friends followed him outside in the snow at a short distance, very much concerned about the way he's going to react at Neil's death, and when Todd suddenly collapses on the ground, the comfort is immediate, friendship is such a wonderful thing, and it's precisely what I love in this particular scene....

    Fun fact: This scene was meant to be an interior scene. But when it began to snow, director Peter Weir thought the scene would have more impact if done outside in the snow. The snow was also starting to let up but Ethan Hawke managed it

    Ethan was feeling weird about his lines in the snow. The director said “Okay. You can _not_ say the lines but you have to make me _think_ you said them.” So he came up with delivering them hysterically like that, in a rush because they had that snow falling and unspoiled and the director wanted to use the beautiful snow scene they weren’t expecting. So that scene was quite unplanned.

    "His father did it!" He's not far off. What his father did constitutes emotional abuse. Even though there is no set standard under the law one of the most common criteria is dominating or repressive behavior against another person. Oh if only I were Neil's lawyer! His father was far too selfish and egocentric for that. Even upon finding Neil's body he exclaims "My son!" over and over, not Neil, but "MY son!" He sees Neil only in his relationship to himself, with no real empathy.

    @@Bastit3hman I think that is quite a leap and that ascribing motive to Neil's dad is both foolhardy and assumptive. As a previous poster said there is not enough context to establish abuse. There isn't enough to ascribe motive, either. Neil's father may have been living vicariously through Neil but to suggest it wasn't because he was merely stubborn or invested in Neil's success due to the sacrifices he made to give that opportunity to Neil is as myopic as Neil's father was to deny that Neil is his own person. We don't know where Neil's father came from or what he overcame in order to be able to send his son to one of the most prestigious and expensive prep schools in the country. There are people who have been in Neil's shoes who have instead of committing suicide made it their charter to sacrifice as Neil's dad did so their son or daughter could be whatever they wanted to be. That would have been a wiser decision from Neil. No one is ultimately responsible for killing Neil but Neil.

You really can see the breakthrough in their relationship. Around Todd, Neil can be who he truly is, be carefree, to love and be loved. That explains why after hearing Neil was dead, Todd immediately ran towards the dock and yelled out "NEILLLLLLL".     Neil reinforced Todd when he was down. Neil loved acting, he got to view it and see it, he was deprived from acting he even cried when his father banned him from acting in the play he had already been elected to do. However he still goes ahead and acts in the play; he was given a taste and so therefore he was placed with a scene, in which he saw the possibility of making it big. Todd saw the snow and he admires it even saying “It’s so beautiful.” he admired it and when he realized neil was not there to enjoy the snow with them he faced reality and therefore plummeted to the ground in disgust, but charlie goes and stuffs snow in his mouth to calm him down. This only awakens Todd’s delusion of Neil being around and even says something that is impossible but true at the same time “It was his father” That is when he stumbles away and walks by himself to contemplate. Both of these things have the same process- and I think it is significant in this way(but this is only my opinion) ; u ;

    R.I.P., Robin Williams. Yesterday was supposed to be his birthday. Last night, I was watching "Dead Poets Society" and was bawling my eyes out. I went through an entire box of tissues crying, sniffling, and blowing my nose. Maybe it's a mixture of how hard this year & especially the past few months have been for me. Maybe it's because right now, I truly feel like Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, and Robin William's characters combined in this movie. I've seen this movie so many times in my life. I saw this movie in English class in high school. I have the DVD & VHS to this movie. After I first saw this movie, I had a big crush on Robert Sean Leonard. I was thrilled when he was on 'House, M.D." with Hugh Laurie on TV. It was just sad how Robert Sean Leonard as Neil - how his voice wasn't heard by his Dad. His Dad only cared about his son going to Harvard and being a medical doctor that he didn't care to hear his son out and listen to what his son wanted. He didn't care about his son's happiness. He only cared about his son living the Dad's dreams, and not his own, and how he looked to impress society. He didn't listen to his son's heart, thoughts, and passions. I was also frustrated how Neil's Mom was silent and didn't speak up for Neil and let the Dad - her husband - make all the decision. Marriages and relationships are supposed to be an equal partnership. It shouldn't be one person dictating and making all the decisions. It's very unbalanced and one sided. Neil's Mom's voice was very silent. And she didn't protect or help her son. This is what happens when one person makes all the rules and doesn't take the time hear other people out and include them & their thoughts & feelings in their decisions. There have been times when I felt some people - online and in real life just railroaded me and didn't take the time, patience, consideration, care, & heart to truly and completely hear me out. In some ways, I do feel like Neil when some people in real life and online just railroad me, force things on me, and tell me that things have to be their way or the highway. It's unhappiness when you don't take the time to hear the other person out and apply patience, time, consideration, compassion, and empathy with them. I don't work with deadlines or timelines in personal friendships & relationships. I think Neil was the same way. Neil was railroaded by his Dad. His Dad only thought of himself. I know that many people in this world have had parents or a parent force them to study fields such as Medicine, Law, Engineering, etc., and tell them that they sent them to all these private & Ivy League schools to have the best of everything. But I think many people FAIL to take the time to truly hear and listen to what the people they care about want. If you care, like, or love someone - you need to take the time to communicate with them, and hear them out. If you don't, sometime tragic thing happen - such as the suicide of Neil, played by Robert Sean Leonard. Robin Williams died of suicide. If I had to travel back in time - I would have liked to have talked to Robin Williams and for him to tell me all the things that made him sad - just anything that was on his mind before he left this Earth. I don't judge or think any less of any person who has died from suicide. I think most people who have died from suicide are highly intelligent, sensitive, caring, generous souls with truly kind hearts. Many times it just came to the point that they felt so many feelings and were overwhelmed by things or they felt trapped where they felt hardly anybody was truly listening to them. Anyways, I can see the frustration that Neil and also Ethan Hawke's character had. Most people, including me, want to have our voices heard. And it's frustrating when our voices aren't heard. Anyways, "Dead Poets Society" is a great movie. I highly recommend this movie for this who haven't watched this film.

    this part of the movie makes me most upset to rewatch because it bring back memories from the beginning of the year when we watched this movie in english class and my classmates were laughing and mocking the way he was falling and crying. i didn't notice ho enraged i was until i stood up and and was shaking and sweating from their reactions. clearly none of them had experienced someone they love killing themselves. i wished i had said something what's wrong with our generation?

    That's a reaction of self-defense from emotions that no one want to feel. I've seen it myself in my classes from teens who can't face that sort of trauma. I also know that letting them in is a truly overwhelming place to be that doesn't seem to have a bottom. Both your reaction and theirs are normal. I wish I could say that anything about these scenes seems false or overdone. It's not. I've been there.

    this scene hurts me so much, and not just because of the crying and the support and the pain of losing ones best friend as well as one of the members of their family. But also because of the deleted scene with Todd and Neil at the dock rehearsing lines and just being together, hanging out and having fun, the same dock that Todd runs to immediately after being told about Neil. It's such a contrast from the happy atmosphere of that scene to the sad and lonely one in this one.

    We were watching this in English class last month and everyone in that class is a mindless un-inspired idiot that only cares about the trends of today. When it got to this scene, I was on the verge of crying, something I never do in school (it would be embarrassing), but the emotional depth of this scene was interrupted when a couple stupid boys started talking about how Todd looked like someone they knew. I couldn't hear what the characters were saying and I got so ticked off. Thank you for posting this scene, I finally got to cry over it, and how symbolic it is to Robin Williams death.

    I've often watched this film, and it aired the morning of Robin's own suicide. Ironically, I came in at the scene where Mr. Keating is crying over Neil's death. It's a fairly safe bet that Robin was already gone by that time, but the world had yet to find out about it.

    A 1979 TV Guide article called "A Morked Woman" in which his "Mork & Mindy" co-star Pam Dawber was interviewed mentions in its first paragraph that Robin faked hanging himself during a rehearsal, there were quite a few references to suicide in many of his films, in "The Angriest Man in Brooklyn", his character, who is dying claims he wanted his birth and death dates to read "1951-2014" as Robin's now do, and his self-titled comedy tour, "Weapons of Self Destruction" seems even more ominous in hindsight. I'd have to conclude he was long predisposed to take his own life. But sadly, were he still here, he would most likely be in a chronic care facility and in the grip of Lewy Body dementia with perhaps only a year or so left to live at this point. I couldn't regret his killing himself more.But who would want him alive and suffering in the way he most likely would be?

    It still irritates me of how they didn’t include the scene where Neil and Todd rehearsed Neil’s play together at the dock, partially or most likely explaining why Todd ran there as Neil’s death settles in. When they rehearsed together, it kind of showed how Neil encouraged Todd to have more courage himself. And Neil’s death led Todd to become stronger, like how he stood on his desk as one last goodbye to dear Mr. Keating.
