Dead Malls Season 5 Episode 17 - Omni Center
As an office worker in downtown Council Bluffs, you may stumble upon a small office park. And while walking through that office park you may think to yourself.. “Why, doesn’t this feel like a mall?”. Why does it feel like a mall, why does it have fountains and conversation pits? Well that’s because it WAS a mall, for years this was the only mall around. And a grand one at that. Once housing 2 anchors and 50 stores under its garden courts. It was all killed, but by what? And how was this mall once thought to be the mall of the future? Take a walk with me, as we explore and tell the tale of Midlands Mall, or the Omni Center. And see how it’s doing as of June, 2023.

Thanks for the shout out! Its like you said, its ironic that The Mall of the Bluffs is demolished but this older mall still stands and in use. Strange how that works out in the end. Thank you for the peek inside!
Love the design of the mall in the pics & those statues are like condensed memories of what was.
I liked the bridge sculpture at the beginning. The statues in the mall were cool too. That sucks the other mall caused this one to die. The conversation areas are my favorite too. Thanks for another great video.

I'm from the area, and the mall of the bluffs site is being converted to a Menards. The only remainants of that mall is the old sears which is now our post office and planet fitness and the old target location which I don't know what they will do with. It's sad that with most malls is survival of the fittest. The mall that's doing well is Westroads in Omaha.

This mall so perfectly encapsulates what was wrong with urban planning in the 1970s-1990s. Tearing down their historic downtown gutted the sense of "place" the community had, and then the consumerism of the era thought it'd be a good idea to build another huge urban shopping center just a few miles away. Even without the early 2000s move towards Internet retail, these malls were doomed. It's a shame. It's good that they are at least trying to bring a sense of place back to the mall with sculptures and what not, but I'm not sure it's a good replacement for the kind of community that develops around local "main street" level retail.
I’m guessing Washington Square mall next! Great video

You got it! Nice job!
Washington Square Mall, Evansville IN Next??, While watching this video and seeing the 70s decor, I could imagine Fleetwood Mac and Kenny Loggins (Which are my favorite 1970s artists), and GM cars rolling through the parking lots, playing over the speakers of this mall in the early days, Great Video!!

Thanks Scott!
It was a cool and unique place. I moved to Council Bluffs in 1986 and witnessed the shift of businesses leaving Midlands and going out to Mall of the Bluffs. Midlands was/is a far more interesting and substantial structure, which probably is part of its suitability for reuse vs demolition. It’s a shame that the Omni switch removed so much of the character of what the building previously had.
That is an interesting looking mall at least it's still being used even for like a business Park That's a good concept. I kind of like the seventies esthetic

Since you're not too far, you should really do a Kansas trip. Topeka, Wichita, Hutchison, all have cool dead malls that haven't really been filmed well yet. I was just in Topeka and that one almost gave me Stratford Square vibes.

I'm excited to hear that you are visiting Indiana. Marquette Mall was my local mall that has been sitting abandoned for almost 10 years at this point, the last store there was Carsons but that closed back in 2018.
Amazing video as always and man do I love that name Omni Center.

What a cool mall it use to be! I totally would of wanted to go there as a kid! Yay my home state is next!!!!
Interesting. Council Bluffs had good shopping at one point. I knew Mall of the Bluffs was demolished a few years ago. Brandeis reminded me of Younkers, however, I'm sure there were differences. Did Council Bluffs ever get a Younkers at either center? Younkers started in Iowa so I am curious now.

Im not sure Council Bluffs ever had a Younkers, as this mall and Mall of the Bluffs never featured one

Must be like the only city in Iowa that had malls that didn't have Younkers as an anchor.
I know I mentioned this on the last video, but I was turned away by security from even stepping foot on Omni property. At least on the weekends, I wouldn't encourage people to go there. Weekdays might be a different story.

In the last comment of the last video, I forgot to mention if we do win the lottery my prediction, the construction will take 3-5 years or maybe more but I will keep you updated!
Interesting phenomenom
The Omni will last until the new Menards gets old and torn down.

Again, another excellent video! As a life long resident of Council Bluffs, I remember when this mall opened. I was five at the time. I remember there being lots of balloons and clowns and other activities when Midlands opened. When Mall of the Bluffs came around, no one really thought anything of it, you either went to the Midlands (affectionately called the old mall) or Mall of the Bluffs (The new mall). But as time when on, Midlands started emptying out and it was heartbreaking to watch. Before it became Omni, there were a few years there were Midlands sat empty and everyone was wondering what would happen to it. You nailed it on the head about Midlands laughing at it's killer while it remained. Also, thanks for covering the Omaha, Nebraska area malls! The more awareness of the local malls the better!
Amazing video North!
Another great content, keep up the mall adventures love it. Fan from Australia

Its these types of small, quaint, unique places that can be just as good as bigger malls. I do wonder if the coworkers there could use more food options nowadays. Say, oh I dont know, an open Cinnabon perhaps? 😅😋

Bro I have an interesting suggestion:: alive malls in midwest. I think the midwest in the region in the US with the possible largest abudence of dead malls so it would be quite interestung to see alive malls. For example, coral ridge mall and old capitol center
Great video. Next will be Washington Square Mall in Evansville IN?

"Center Point" may be a disappointing name change from "Midlands," but if you think about it, they are functionally the same name in meaning.
@NorthCdogg22

That’s actually true
The next mall I believe is River Falls mall in Clarksville Indiana. That place is basically just one big Bass Pro shop now with a tent roof. It’s been sort of forgotten as a mall. Green tree mall is the main mall now in that area which happens to be right next to it.
@NorthCdogg22

I wish, but sadly I don’t think there is anything left of river falls at all, it has all been turned into a bass pro shop
Your coming to EVV and it's Washington square Mall is the next stop on your trip!
I love these malls. I can never guess which mall is next cause I’m not from the Midwest. In Southern California where I’m from, all we have are Westfield malls and they feel souless in a sense, cause they’re all owned by a real estate investment company. I love these malls from the Midwest cause they were made by the community with wholesome history. I even love when they’re abandoned to see what is left behind…and the explorer in me like them too.
Clarksville big top mall
Would this tent roof mall you speak of happen to be the River Falls Mall in Clarksville, IN? (now Bass Pro Shop)

Are you going to Washington Square Mall?
You spelled it wrong. It is "Omni Centre"
The painted open ceiling metal girders look and took much sunlight in people’s faces was a trend that expired. Never liked it. Feels too much like you’re at an outdoor theme park like sea world or something. A mall that whose design stood the test of time is Woodfield mall in Illinois. Now that’s an impressive and gorgeous mall.
