Your intuition is good. Tuomas really is a poet. And the meaning of the lyrics is how he would like to be remembered when he is no more.

Great reaction. One of my top 5 Nightwish songs. One of the more personal songs for Tuomas and the fans. An old song written by Tuomas when he was young. Inspired by the question what would you say if you knew you were going to die tomorrow. It is a self written obiturary. Tuomas has said this song was a way of thanking all those who deserve his thanks and a piss off to all those who deserve it as well. Tuomas often uses the dead boy as a symbol of the loss of childhood innocence and imagination that we experience as we grow into adulthood. When you hear dead boy or poet in his lyrics he is usually referring to himself. He also has a strong connection to the ocean and sees it as a place of peace and tranquility. A refugee from the modern world. So in this song Tuomas is saying that he no longer lives for himself or his friends but only for the music. He puts all his feelings into the music and his music is what gives his life meaning. He tries to make his life better but can never get back to the innocence of his youth. He wants to be loved but can't connect with people. He asks that they remember his music, not him, after he is gone. Thus a lonely soul, an ocean soul. Note that on the video wall behind the band the boy is holding up his arms to several swans. In Finnish mythology swans are the creatures that guide your soul to the afterlife.

Swan on the screen: In Finnish mythology and folklore, the swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. Tuonelan Joutsen (Swan of Tuonela) carries the dead to afterlife. Tuomas composed this when he was 22 years old. This from their book, timeline year 2000: ------------------------ Besides the choir, the album featured some other guest artists, Ike Vil of Babylon Whores contributed some deranged self-inspection for 'The Kinslayer', and 'Dead Boy's Poem' featured a child's voice. "I had an idea of a song with a young boy reciting a poem", Tuomas says. "The trouble was that no Finnish 12-year-old could pronounce English so that it sounded right, so I had to find a native speaker to do it. My mother's sister, actress Miitta Sorvali, knew (the English-Finnish director and writer) Neil Hardwick well, and my mom remembered that Neil had a son called Sam. I called him and asked him to do the poem, and Sam agreed right away. It was just funny that when I talked to this 15-year-old boy, he seemed like such a citizen of the world and was actually familiar with our band, too. Sam said he'd be free to record the poem anytime; I'd just have to give him a call. He even knew where Finnvox was and promised to meet us there." The professionalism of young Sam Hardwick made a deep impression on Tuomas. "When he arrived at the studio, I had to ask him to wait for ten minutes or so, and he just pulled a book from his pocket and sat down to read", Tuomas says. "I gave him the poem, and he read it through a few times. We did some editing, and Sam just sat down on the studio floor and read his book, after which I asked him to read the poem a couple of more times." "When I started talking about his reward, he wouldn't hear anything about it. He just said "It's okay, it was fun". I insisted on giving him at least a couple of hundred marks, and then he left. A very puzzling young man, but a real pro and a very nice person. He later did the beginning of 'Bless the Child', too, and once again, everything worked like a charm. 'Dead Boy's Poem' continues to be a sort of a signature song for Nightwish, and after 'Wishmaster' came out, the song was voted on our web site as the best Nightwish song ever. There's certainly something about it that defines us, and - for me at least - the poem is the absolute high point of the song. So Sam Hardwick made a big contribution to our music." For Tuomas, 'Dead Boys Poem' is a deeply personal song. "The idea for that song came to me when I was thinking that if I die tomorrow, what kind of a message do I want to leave behind", Tuomas explains. "That song is all about apologizing, about saying thank you to those who deserve it - and likewise telling those who deserve it to fu*k off. It's kind of a testament. I had to make a song like that, just in case I happened to die tomorrow. A Finnish man rarely thanks anyone, or says he's sorry, but for me at least, it was possible through music." "I still live at my mom and dad's, who are the best people in the world, but I've never been able to tell them what I think about them", Tuomas confesses. "Maybe if they listen to the song and read the lyrics, they'll understand that it's partly about them, too. It's also about my best friends and Nightwish, the band that has come to be a significant - if not the most significant - part of myself in the course of years. My band mates are really important to me, but it's hard for me as a Finnish man to show my feelings. I'd rather write a song like 'Dead Boy's Poem' and ask them to listen to the words, because I just can't say it out loud. It's such a personal song, and I think it has the best lyrics I've ever been able to write. Musically, it's really good, too, definetely the best song on 'Wishmaster' - maybe the best Nightwish song ever." It had not gone unnoticed by Tarja (1st lead singer) that Tuomas expressed his feelings through music. "The melodic power of music - and the fact that music can be beautiful even at its heaviest - has always meant an awful lot to Tuomas", Tarja says. "He's able to show all his feelings in his music. I think Tuomas is very brave, because not many people can do the same. He may not look like a macho man, but when it comes to music, It's all or nothing for him."

the big four? strange, the biggest concert was the last with Tarja "end of an Era" for band changing reasons... It's like the comments on the big 3 songs (then, now I hear big 4 songs) of which there never was until mysteriously in the last few years! 🤣 we live in interesting times indeed. I understand everyone is excited to share their new discovery of Nightwish and this was the period with the best lineup(s) but the band has history. I realise no one will care but I would say my big 4 concerts (in recorded order) would be Wishes to Eternity -first decent concert recording and with original lineup. End of An Era - last with Tarja and when it all went down, Wacken 2013 - the concert that introduced Floor to the world and then you could toss up the others, I would lean towards Buenos Aires 2018 for the celebrated South American crowds and the unique song selection from the Decades tour. Although Wembly holds a soft spot as it has the Poet...and Tampere has the spectacular performance of TGSoE???

This is what Tuomas said about this song: "This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul". It might help you to know Tuomas uses several pseudonyms to refer to himself in various Nightwish songs which he writes from experiences or imagination, he says he is a man with a boy's heart and you will see that directly in places, here for instance, or elsewhere as "one with a pure heart", a line Floor sings in a high head voice as you might hear from an excited small boy. Of course, you hear the narration spoken by a young boy. . . . . . . He will also use poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul - Tuomas has an affinity for the ocean, he was studying to be a marine biologist. This song is his self-written obituary/epitaph, he is the dead boy and appears in the back drop imploring the swans which in Finnish traditions carry you off to the afterlife as many of your contributors have said.. There's two Shakespeare quotes in this song almost verbatim from Sonnet 71 and 72, Sonnet 71 starts, "No longer mourn for me when I am dead" and Tuomas used the line " Nay, if you read this line, remember not the hand that writ it"; and Sonnet 72, "And live no more to shame nor me nor you."

As mentioned above, the last member is Troy. He is the multi-instrumentalist of the group. He is English. He was made a permanent member of the group at the same time as Floor, although he toured with them as a session musician for years when Annette was lead singer. The instrument you mention is a kind of bag-pipes, so you are not wrong. It's the Irish Uillean Pipes. It is operated with a bellows under the elbow rather than blown into like the Scottish pipes. In this song, he is playing an Irish bosouki, I believe. It has a lovely twangy sound, which he is effectively playing in rhythm here. He also sings backing vocals for some songs. His voice is softer than Markos, so you can't always hear him clearly, but he does sing lead in a couple of songs, including The Carpenter in this concert. It's worth a listen. It's the first single that was ever released by Nightwish.Troy and Floor's harmonies are lovely. It was originally sung by Tarja and... Tuomas himself! There's a music video of the studio version on KZread. Tuomas's voice is even quieter than Troy's.

This song is about lost youth. A running theme in several of his songs. You may hear the term dead boy but it's really about the boy part of yourself you lose when you grow up. Troy in this one is playing an Irish Bouzouki. Bouzouki's are normally made from gourds so are round backed but the Irish Bouzouki is flat backed but has the same stringing as the original. Uillean pipes or Irish Elbow pipes.

Don't worry too much about not understanding the lyrics. Tuomas the poet uses a lot of symbology and recurring themes which can be cryptic. Ironically, while the song is intensely personal because that is the well from which these words flowed, Tuomas does not like to draw attention to himself. Hence the lyric "If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it Remember only the verse". Also while some Nightwish songs appear gloomy they are just about always positive when you fully understand them.

If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you have to say today? That inspired Tuomas to write this Tarja era song, which Floor makes here own in this performance. Tuomas answers in his persona of an innocent, misunderstood boy. He is always the boy, the poet, in his songs. Troy on the bouzouki here. One of my favorite Emppu solo, who was treating it with the somber tone of the song, and therefore not smiling. A must do song from this Buenos Aires show is I Want my Tears Back. Yearning..."IF ONLY MY HEART HAS A HOME" as it turned out it would not be to one of Tarja? Tuomas learned first about Tarja when she was entering his home...maybe Tarja became Tuomas' early crush which explains alot why on Earth he needed to ask Tarja to join his Nightwish project and even dropped his initiate plans for the band's style to suite Tarja's voice even better aka to write tailer-made songs for her, which are easily amongst the best he ever wrote. There is a photo-montage of a KZreadr called Dany Ela about Tuomas' song "Two for Tragedy" with pretty intimate photos of both that show both Tuomas' sympathy for Tarja and the distance that Tarja always kept to him. In one photo Tuomas was even mirrioring Tarja's colored red hair-strains. Just type "Nightwish two for tragedy" and look for her rendition. P.S. ROMANTIC ONLY ON PAPER* is a line from another , yet un-reacted song, called "Devil & Deep Dark Ocean", which is about "forced love". Theme: What, if he had the power to pick any girl he wants? Knowing that this is a bad thing, Tuomas' marine biologist's alter Ego is playing the devilish part here within that track. Wait for Marko playing that character live on stage... In real life the character of both Tuomas and Marcelo couldn't have been more diverse. Marcelo, a former venue manager from Argentina, turned out not to be only a very jealous person, thus starting to separate Tarhja more and more from the band (and Tuomas). Contrary to that shy, introvert dreamer, Tuomas was often descripted, Marcelo is more like a dominant alpha-male character, loud and boasting. Tarja learned about him, when he was fighting off her male fans, who tried to harass her, with his fists.

Nightwish's songs sometimes reference each other. For example, this song is on the album Wishmaster, which was released before Century Child. Century Child had songs called "Feel For You" and "Ocean Soul", both of which are mentioned in this song. I have no idea what it means, but it feels important.

About 20 minutes before this concert Floor was sick and could hardly stand unaided - but the show must go on! Emppu - why smile delivering a eulogy? - what Tuomas called this song, HIS own eulogy. An Ocean soul! edit" "Lorn" short plural form of "forlorn"....

Trad Irish player here (as welll as metal player... they are not far apart) The 5th member of Nightwish is Troy, who plays the Irish Uilleann pipes. (pronounced "i'lan"... short i, short a) There is an armpit bellows the charges the bag with air. Tune in the "I Want My Tears Back" from the same concert... many more Emppu smiles in that one. Or, just keep going like you are, right now. The choice is entirely yours.

I find it peculiar how americans seem to struggle more than others to understand the words in their songs. Floor does have an accent - something between british and duch mixed with others while travelling the world and she does bend some words/letters slightly to be able to sing them in a better way. But still its americans who seem to struggle the most with the lyrics. I guess there is some fundamental differences in pronunciation that makes it harder than it is to other native english speakers and us who have learned english as foreign language. This time I was most surprised you struggled also with the spoken word - I know for a fact that boy is a native british english speaker and chosen for the part because of that very reason. Not dissing your language ear, but just peculiar why it seems its many of the american reactors that struggle the most.

So you finally got to the best concert of all at Buenos Aires, and my joint 4th song (with Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean from this concert). It's a mystery how you cannot hear the lyrics. The Beast is a Framus guitar and Warwick Bass - both the same group of companies and Marco is a Warwick exclusive player. Emppus guitar: It's an ESP EV-1 - it's custom for him and EV stands for his initials. In the first 19 years he played the white one quite a bit, but the purple one, much beaten up and with cracks in the head, is his favourite and the white one is mostly for rehearsal now. Note that it has no tone controls. He gets perfect tone without them for whichever song he is playing. Some notes: From Tuomas.... "Dead Boy's Poem' featured a child's voice. "I had an idea of a song with a young boy boy reciting reciting a poem", Tuomas says. "The trouble was that no Finnish so I had to find a 12-year-old could pronounce English so that it sounded right, so I had to find a native speaker to do it. My mother's Sister, actress Miitta Sorvali, knew [the English-Finnish director and writer] Neil Hardwick well, and my mum remembered that Neil had a son called Sam. I called him and asked him to do the poem, and Sam agreed right away. It was just funny that when I talked to this 15-year-old boy he seemed like such a citizen of the worldand was actually familiar with our band too. Sam said he'd be free to record the poem anytime; I'd just have to give him a call. He even knew where Finnvox was and promised to meet us there. The professionalism of young Sam Hardwick made a deep impression on Tuomas. "When he arrived at the studio, had to ask him to wait for ten minutes or so and he just pulled a book from his pocket and sat down to read". Tuomas says, " I gave him the poem, and he read it through a few times. We did some editing and Sam just sat down on the studio floor and read his book, after which I asked him to read the poem a couple of more times."

Yes, Troy did play the backpipes. But it was an Irish backpipe instead of a Scottish one. They both sound very different because of the different way the air is pumped into the intruments. To me the Irish backpipe is much better sounding.

Marco's Beast has the bass on top because he plays the bass significantly more than the guitar, and it is so heavy he has to prop it up on his thigh to play the lower neck.

If there is no lyrics, just pull them up on your phone. Emppu is not smiling due to the serious nature of this song. The spoken poem is a type of self eulogy. This song is based around a hypothetical situation. Later you will hear one or more of the songs referenced in the lyrics of the second verse. Wrote for the eclipse. "Sleeping Sun" Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin Died for the beauty the one in the garden Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom Failed in becoming a god This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas inner child speaking. When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..." Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side. In archaeological excavations done in Karelia, a child was found and its body was laying upon a wing of a swan. In Finnish mythology and folklore, the swan was the divine messenger between the living and the dead. When a swan dropped its head below the surface, people of old times believed that it was communicating to the spirit world. Killing swans was a terrible crime because it was as bad as murdering a human. Punishments for killing swans were severe, the usual penalty was death. Swan song often symbolizes an artist´s last performance but for a long time all across the world all the way to the 17th century it was believed that swans only sang when they died. A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny. Here are the spoken words from Dead Boy's Poem. "If you read this line Remember not the hand that wrote it Remember only the verse Songmaker's cry, the one without tears For I've given this its strength And it has become my only strength Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew The sweet piano writing down my life" "Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone Show me love, hold the lorn So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me I 'm sorry Time will tell, this bitter farewell I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you And you I wish I didn't feel for you anymore" A lonely soul An ocean soul
