Dead 12V Batteries Continue to Affect Long Time Owners | Hyundai Ioniq 5

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Well it seemed like for a while that the 12V drain issue was no longer an issue but in the last several days I've heard from multiple owners that have owned their Ioniq 5s for most of 2022 and are now beginning to suffer this issue and are being left stranded. Let me know in the comments if you've experienced this problem lately and under what circumstances. Be sure to scroll the comments, there are many people describing their issues. And please specify what model year you have.
Hyundai engineering told me to tell owners that until a fix is figured out, to try and keep your cars state of charge over 35% to make aure the 12V is continually charging. Below 35% there is a chance the 12V will no longer get charged leading to this issue.

Had my car since christmas -21. Happened to me last week for the first time whit this car. Dealers wanted me to send it in but I known about this since my first ioniq. Figured it would be worse whit this one since it has the bluelink app so I already had the portable starter in it. Will receive the 2023 model in december and when asked they didnt know if the problem would be fixed. We shall see. Edit: fun fact. I had a new update when i got it running again. :)

Hey! Thanks for your video. I bought my Ioniq 5 in November 2021 in Germany. First time I had this issue with a complete dead 12V battery was about a month later and since then on a regular basis (probably 8-9 times within 2022). I called the Hyundai assistance here in Germany as it is their job to get the car running. I brought the car a couple of times to the dealer and they changed several things like the loading flap and the chip which is controlling the loading flap. Nothing ever solved the issue. Last time I picked up the car from the repair shop a couple of days ago and guess what. My car is dead again. The car itself is great but with this issue it is unacceptable to keep it. And to be honest, it seems that they are completely clueless. I will call the assistance again and will let it tow to the dealer one last time. If they can’t fix it now I will leave it there and will ask them to terminate the contract so that I will get back my money. It is really a shame. Cars like this pretty much forcing everyone who wants to buy an affordable electric vehicle to go to Tesla. I have no problem with having a car which has an issue and needs to be fixed. That can happen to every brand and every product. But having this issue over a whole year, missing important appointments, investing time to bring the car to the dealer and picking it up again and again without fixing the problem is just so annoying. These are just my 5 cents on this topic from Germany. So it seems to be a global problem with this car… Best, Ben

Can I suggest that you keep your Battery Jumper in the glovebox. As you drive the glovebox gets as warm as the cabin. I put a recording thermometer in my frunk and it only got a couple of degrees above the outside temperature during our recent cold snap up here in Canada. I expected more considering the front motor is underneath it. At least in the glovebox the lithium based jumper gets warmed enough preserving it charge over time. I know that last winter I kept my jumper in the trunk of my daily drive Toyota sedan. In two months, December and January it went from 100% charge to 25%. For February and March I kept it in the cabin and it stayed over 75% charge.

Hi Ioniq Guy. Really good you are bringing this issue up. I have a Kona electric 2020 and my first experience with a flat 12 volt battery was about one year ago. Just now I had a flat battery twice within 3 weeks. Once in the wash hall and once in my carport. Even it's the cold season in Denmark and I usually only do short trips during the winter. I'm happy for the free Hyundai roadside assistance but it's really annoying and not an issue you should experience in a modern EV.

After having seen a video about this issue early on (I've had my I5 since March) I bought a battery monitor and a portable charger and at least that helps me worry less, but this is, as a you say, a massive issue which Hyundai needs to sort out pronto and also be upfront with their customers who have invested a lot of money and faith in their product.

@@gregoryfleming4324 I am sure this is not so abnormal - an 80m range-drop is not so drastic, I think. So many factors come into play; the amount of driving, the driving-style, terrain, weather - no two vehicles are the same, I think. Once we get into serious cold weather, the range will significantly reduce. That is the nature of the beast. As long as the car is kept between 50-80% SOC you should not experience anything serious.

@@gregoryfleming4324 You must drive the car a lot, if 210m range is causing anxiety. I have never had any issues with the 12 V battery. I find myself topping off the car and hardly go below 30%. If I’m at 30%, I’m usually heading towards an EA DC fast charger. I have driven up (and back in the same day) to Mount Snow three or four times last winter and immediately plug-in and then go skiing. I may have 30 to 40% of my battery when I arrive and 65 to 70% when I head home after skiing.

Thanks for providing the simple solution to this problem. I didn't realize you could cause this problem yourself. First day at the campsite I turned the car without hitting the brake pedal (I think this results in Accessory mode). I pulled out a small air pump and started filling my air mattress. When the mattress never seemed to inflate, I took a closer look and found a large hole. Found a patch and waited about an hour for the patch to set. Then continued to successfully inflate the mattress. At the end of all this I when to turn the car off and found the battery completely dead. Of course I should have put the car into Utility mode but when I started all this I thought it would be a quick inflate. I had watched this video months ago but had forgotten to take my jump starter with me (it's in a older car that needs it regularly). I walked to a nearby store and purchased a Noco 1000A jump starter. It was either defective or too small and wouldn't start my car. Borrowed a neighbor's Schumacher 1500A jump starter which worked first time. The car seems fine now. I'm hoping I haven't done any real damage and that this won't happen again. But just to be sure I went to the local Walmart which had the same jump starter on the shelf with no waiting for delivery for $99. Thanks for this advice.

I had a KIA EV , I loved the car, I set my shop up to handle a level two charger , plus my home garage . Did some charging experiments, meaning I read every thing I could find and came to the conclusion the best charge was about 80 % . This to save the battery life . I charged to 100 % one time and it showed a Range of 315, I have a picture of the dashboard . So I decided to take it on what I considered a long round trip . 120 miles . When I came back, I think I had over 30 % left . I plugged it in over nite and bought it up to 87 % . The next morning the 12 Volt was dead. This was the second time in 1200 miles . I called KIA corp and had it flat bedded in. The Second time . I had the booster you showed, but when a new car is under Warranty, I will not touch it .The dealer had it for about 5 days and when I returned to check the status they had it parked with a big booster on the back seat. I decided, that was enough of an experiment with EV's for me, I traded it in on a Hybrid, which I am very happy with . Being a very technical person , who worked on Electronically controlled jet Fighter engines, I am curious to find out where the fault lies , is it a relay hanging up, or some other Gremlin in the soft ware . Again, I am just curious, because EV's are going to be the answer for people that can afford two cars . One for around town and one for long trips. I liked running on energy from my Solar panels and passing Gas Stations, and I was set for this pattern, but it did not work out . I love the KIA long Warranty ! Other then this little problem I think EV's will work well in the future !

After 18k kilometers this finally happened to us. We plugged in on a Friday evening, forgot to unplug, and the battery was drained a couple days later. So I'm guessing it was the state of charge lights that drew the battery down. This is consistent with the solution suggested by others of putting a small felt pad on the little button that closes the charging port. In other words, it seems like that button is also a physical switch that turns off the state of charge lights when the charging port cover is closed, and it doesn't always get depressed enough.

Couple weeks ago my EV6 turned into a log. Nothing. Both AAA and Kia were called. AAA came first and at the time I didn't know how to use the key to open the car door so I could pop the hood. Tried the key in every which way but right. AAA put the door pump and the long wire to open the door. Popped the hood and he said he didn't know about electric cars! He began to try and rip the frunk out! I stopped him and showed him how to get to the battery. He jumped it and the car started immediately. I called Kia dealer the next day and they got me right in 2 WEEKS LATER! Oh well, no problem in the 2 weeks and finally got in. They couldn't find any cause. Wow. They should teach how to get the car open as there is a procedure with the key and time! Crazy. Thanks for your video!

I live in Europe and my HI5 has gotten a battery update/charge port update earlier this year. The problem usually is the chargeport door. The car thinks the flap is open and keeps giving a 'close' command and that drains the 12v battery. There is a solution so get your car to the Hyundai dealer 😊 I still have a starter pack in the car though 😇

Hoping neither car will have this issue because we live in Canada & it's cold 9 months of the year here. But I guess we should grab one of these jumpers just to be safe so thanks for the heads up. Hopefully Hyundai/Kia fixes this for existing owners and removes the problem in future models going forward.

But it certainly is unfortunate that we can't let the car be overnight and under 30% for fear of not being able to get going next morning. My other concern is that I will soon be doing an international trip and will have to leave my car in a cold weather airport for over a week. I guess I will make sure it's fully charged and that I also have my battery with jumper cables fully charged.

I just bought the charger since i cannot continue to call for a tow- just like you said, it is extremely frustrating. Parked the car at 70% charge. When she went to drive it again at 4:00, it was totally dead. I have a power pack that I have stored in the engine compartment in case this happens again. The only recent change was that I installed a level 2 charger for it about a month ago, but that seems unrelated. Thanks again for the video. Gives us an idea what’s going on…. I haven't had issue with the 12 volt battery so far. However there is a light with turn on yellow just behind the infotainment screen. I have seen this light on a couple of times when the car is parked that means that the high voltage battery is charging the 12 volt battery whenever is necessary. you could at least assume that charging system is actually working and is just the battery which is bad. you can find this information in the owner manual.

I’ve just started having this issue with my ‘22 EV6 about a week ago. I took it into the dealership and they tested the battery and the battery tested good. My advisor suggested that next time it happens that I should have it towed to Kia rather than jumping it and maybe the battery would test bad, then, but it sounds like the battery itself isn’t really the issue so much as how the car manages it, so I don’t know if that’s a good idea or not. My dash cam is connected through the rear view mirror just like yours is. I do have LED accent lights connected to the 12V power port, but that shuts off with the car, so that shouldn’t be a problem, unless that port can somehow become active.

We sometimes park it by our front door and I see the light on fairly frequently like maybe every 3 days or so. It's been pretty cold here at night, @ 20 degrees F. I continue to wonder if the UK BMS update described in the MrEV video made by Andrew Till (mentioned by one of the other viewers below) will ever be available in the US. I have raised this question on the I5 forum and been told by another owner that it's not necessary because US cars already have it, but frankly I remain skeptical of this as we continue to hear reports of this problem in the US. Corbin, if you have any connections with HyundaiUSA to ask about this update for US cars (whether or not it's needed, is available, will be available, etc.), that would be a great button to push. Thanks for making this video!

Perhaps I contribute with a small bit of additional information from Hyundai: I wrote to Hyundai Europe regarding the 12V battery issue, and asked them if there was a BMS software update applicable to the serial number of my car. They wrote back that the BMS update is only applicable to cars with a battery warmer... (Mine does apparently not have it) This kind of contradicts @Andrew Till / Mr. EV, as it points towards that the BMS update does not address the 12V issue. Perhaps Hyundai just tried to sweep the issue under the rug by giving him this update… I don’t know?

Andrew Till's video did show, IIRC that after this update his 12v was getting topped off much more often, so I'm not sure what to believe. It's interesting that you were told the BMS update only applies to cars with battery warmer. In the US, I believe early MY22 only have a battery warmer (although maybe it's called a heat pump over here, I'm not sure if there's a difference?) if they are AWD. So, does that mean that RWD cars (like mine) do not suffer from the 12v drain problem because that BMS update does not apply to them? I would be interested to learn if any US RWD owners have had the 12v drain problem.

Thanks for raising this issue, my 2022 Ioniq 5 I bought in March 2022 has had this issue. I noticed the dash light being on a lot for a day or two and then the battery went flat. A few weeks ago I noticed it happening again, the light was on a lot out of nowhere, and so I disconnected the 12v battery and let it sit for a few hours, then the next few days/weeks the light hasn't come on hardly at all. I think the issue is something electrical is doing something faulty and drawing too much power at times and the 12v recharge can't keep up over a period of time. I have heard it might be the charging flap servo/motor, or it could be bluelink.

Mine did the same. It’s been in and out of the shop. First time took them 2 weeks and they changed the 12 volt battery. I took it back the next day after I diagnosed that the car was not charging the 12 volt and there was a serious drain coming from the infotainment. The car charged the 12 volt so often burned out the regulator between the two batteries. They ordered the part but still can’t identify the drain. It’s now been in the shop 2 months. Hyundai seems super incompetent with this issue. Makes me very concerned when I have the next small problem like all cars do. I can’t be out of a car for months. Luckily they have provided me a loner car at no charge so that is appreciated.

I have the Torque app with an OBD dongle plugged into my Ioniq 5 limited. One thing I noticed is the car charges the 12v battery when I turn the car on, however unlike a gas powered car, it does not keep charging. I'm assuming after it sees the 12v battery charged it turns off. I can see this by monitoring the 12v battery voltage. It rests at about 12.1v, but goes up to a little over 14v when charging. The 12v battery also goes up to 14v while charging the car. I'm hoping mine is fine, but I also have an emergency jump starter.

You've solved the Ioniq's issue. The traction battery stack as well as the 12v battery needs to be charged, when the traction stack hits 30%. 1. If you're charging at a station and you're below 30%...connect your tag a long 12v battery pack, while you charge the traction stack. 2. If you're at home and the stack is at 30%, connect a trickle charger to your 12v while you charge the traction stack. Just make sure you have a trickle charger that can charge both an AGM and a STD 12 v battery.

I learned that if the car is unlocked (on purpose or not), or even if the charging pistol cannot lock (frequent issue on Ioniq 1), then the main battery stays isolated and no charging or 12V recharging can happen. I would suggest you guys investigate the dome lights switches + door/trunk switches.

Haven't experienced it myself, but I do see the orange light come on a few times. I checked the V using Torque and it seems that the car lets the battery go down a LOT - down to 12.4V, which is pretty low for a 12V agm battery. AGM batteries tend to die without much warning, so it could be that the car cycles these batteries to a low V too many times until they give up the ghost. Which means that a) the car requires a lot of battery power when parked and b) a bigger 12V battery should be fitted. Most likely, a drop-in Li battery replacement will do the trick, which is something I've been considering if we end up keeping the car (if we get preconditioning update).

Also you said that you don't have any accessories plugged in that would be draining the battery so that there's no reason why it should be happening to you and it hasn't happened to you, right? There has to be a cut off point where the main battery stops charging the 12Volt, otherwise it is likely to completely drain everything in potentially the middle of nowhere. Perhaps there could be an emergency override option to charge the 12V enough to start the car?

Hi Guy; Steve here from Seattle. 2022 Ioniq 5 SE that I just purchased 10 months ago has dead 12V today. Hyundai Road Side assistance (sub contracted with AAA) is on their way with 1 h eta. It's 45 deg today, the car was down to 11% on the main battery so I suspect that my short drives the last few days were not charging the 12V. I've not had any accessories going other than my phone was plugged in for charging yesterday, only while driving. Interestingly, my wife and I noticed the last couple of days that the heater blew cold air at first, then would act normally after turning it off and back on. Think that should be run off the main battery so not sure if related. One final thing is that the light bar above the rear hatch back is lit up. Doors don't work, hatch won't open, charging door won't open. BTW I have both jumper cables and a portable starter like the one you have, sadly they are in my wife's car who is not available to help for a few hours. Haven't had time yet, but gosh, I wish we could all do some kinda class action lawsuit against them. Thanks for this video. Gonna see if keeping main battery above 35% will keep it alive.

I had this issue this week. I live in Norway. It has been cold (-10 deg c). Left my car overnight with 15% battery after long trip. 12V battery was at 6V the next morning. I had to remove and charge back up. Seems to be ok now. I will not be leaving car with less than 30% charge in future. My big concern is that lead acid batteries don't like big discharges - so could be damaged now. Considering switching to a lithium ion 12v...

23000kms, 2022 ionic 5, 9 months, no problems. I keep my car cycling between 30 and 80 percent, don't use the app, don't leave on while parked. I did purchase a 12 volt jumper just in case. Hope this is solved for all of us.

I had a dead 12v battery in my Ioniq 5 about 2 months ago. Jumped it and recharged it, and back to normal, but that battery drain came on fast. I did some digging and found some having battery drainage with the Blue Links app (checking battery status over and over). I know it sounds odd, but the app checks the car from the 12v, so I don't use the app or the widget anymore. We'll see if it helps.

Have you tested the health of your current 12v battery. They need to be changed every 2-3 years in ICE vehicles too. Getting a better quality battery may be a good investment.

Yup, having same problem, but with the new (2024) IONIQ 6. 3rd occurrence now. Guess I need to purchase the jump starter to resolve. Hyundai dealer seems clueless on how to fix this, and no software update is effective. Like you, LOVE the car, hate the inconvenience.

I have a 2022 Tucson PHEV and worry about this since I’m in Canada where it gets cold. The 12v battery is located in the rear under the cargo mat so accessing to boost or charge isn’t easy. There’s an escape mechanism to open the rear hatch but you need to open the front door and crawl in, etc. After 12 months I have not had a problem with not starting but would like to know how we can avoid this and if the Aux Battery Saver + is sufficient to keep the 12v battery charged.

Had this issue in Germany with the 22 model after 9 months on the 23rd of December for the first time. Battery level 80%. 12v battery low at 3.9V. I have the newest software update from November 22.

Thank you for the information, I live in Scotland, it’s been 0-12 lately. The dealer principle claimed that it may be a computer malfunction. You would have thought that having sold these cars for two years he would be more knowledgeable. I am buying a 12 volt pack in expectation of further problems. Shame because I like the car.

We purchased a portable jumper shortly after purchasing our I5 last February. So far we have not needed to use it. We haven’t left it sit below 30% SOC so maybe that helps.

I've had a similar experience with my HI5 AWD Limited. No 12 vot battery problems. I have not gone longer than a day with the SOC below 30. I do keep a charger in the car just in case but have not had to use it in 8 months of ownership.

Happened to me this past weekend. My battery jumper didn't help at all. Batter my was completely dead, sat for one full day in a garage at 71 to 75 degrees. Only have a dash cam hooked up. First time it's happened, bought the car in May. Had to completely recharge battery. Hopefully Hyundai fixes this issue ASAP!!

Just happened to me. I have a 2022 - coming up on 2 years in March. I also bought one of those portable jumper things, but it didn't work. I guess my battery was too far drained. So I plugged my battery into a trickle charger, and it was charged in about an hour or less. Wasn't having an issue until just now... I just got it back from the shop about a week ago where they did the recall/upgrade stuff.

I got my IONIQ 5 on May 30th, and just recently started having this problem where I get the battery EV Indicator. Usually it happens if I don't drive the car for a day but today it happened while I was at work and I had driven the car that day. I do notice that the EV battery is still at the same charge %. I have an appointment but I get the feeling they won't have a solution for this. It's very frustrating.

I also have a 2022 I5 Ultimate in Canada. I did buy the portable jumper about a year ago, but fortunately have not had to use it yet. I have, however, used it twice to assist neighbours with their ICEs and once, with my second car, that is also an ICE. QUESTION - Is it true that the big battery does not charge the small battery while the big battery is being charged?

I had this same issue with my Canadian 2020 Soul EV, even brought it in after 6 dead 12 volt battery events. They would check the battery and it was fine according to their tester. I just went out and bought a good qaulity AGM for 1/2 the price that Kia would charge for their suspect quality battery, been working just fine at over 1 year never dead!

@@superlats it is a advanced glass mat construction which is different than a typical wet cell much more rugged less self discharge and typically 2 to 3 times the life span. More car mfgs are moving to these higher quality batteries.
