De Vrouwe Linda #6 DAF 475 and the Counterweight. Diesel engine problems and engine history.

A little history of the propulsion systems of DeVrouwe Linda. A look at what I’ve learned about my DAF 475 Diesel engine. Update on the mast and the counterweight. Go electric?

Just picked up that you've been good enough to reply to my comments, thank you. That means a lot to me. Please don't get the idea that I might have owned any of the ex-working boats I've had the great pleasure in helping to sail (apart from an Enterprise dingy that is). Retired now, I was a working girl who always earned just enough that I could indulge modestly, some of my passions. The Thames Barge that left the Bawley standing was iron hulled, Glasgow built 'Thistle'. A veteran of many East Coast barge races, she was at that time operating out of Pin Mill, Suffolk. The London based mulie barge 'Will' was once named 'Will Everard' and as you say one of the largest built (at Great Yarmouth). I like the beard Canice - hope you kept it - Teresa

You’re very welcome, I try to get to all the comments eventually! There are loads of videos of ‘Thistle’ on KZread, I’ll nerd out on those tonight! I have zero sailing experience, so you are still waaaaay more experienced than I. I do wonder sometimes what is it that drives me to restore a sailing barge, considering the new mast cost €9000 and I’ve never sailed a boat in my life! In years to come they will call me eccentric, I’m sure. Hahahaha

I have a Gardner 3L2 on my NB together with a boatmans cabin. The engine is from 1930 and is bombproof and so easy to maintain, none of that Kromhout pre heat malarkey. Such a similar engine would look great in your barge 😁

That is a super set up! Beautiful engine! I did a bit of research into Kromhout and although this is quite common, Kromhout licensed some of their technology to other manufacturers including Gardner. So you might have a little Kromhout DNA in your boat. Thankfully not the hot bulb!😂. I was surprised to learn Vauxhall was purchased by General Motors in 1925 and were sharing components with everyone! I digress. The DAF engine in De Vrouwe Linda was licensed to Leyland Trucks. So really I’m driving a floating bus and consider that in the 60’s the main cabin of the boat used to be a bus!!!

Lucky you got the lead out...and found the rusted bolts before they found you..I like the electric motor idea....

I just found myself in your excellent videos,I have some question for electrifying propulsion;electric propulsion is great but instead of diesel generator, could it be possible to use a Stirling engine ?

Well! Now you’ve put the cat among the pigeons! As a result of your comment I’ve had to learn about Stirling engines.... Very interesting they can be run off solar as the source of heat....

If you get good at sailing consider converting to electric drive as your boat has lots of room for solar collectors. Ah! I see you are thinking that way.

Hi Jonathan, Wind (sails) and Solar (electric drive) that’s the plan. The terrible thing is, the diesel engine needs an overhaul, but I’d rather spend the money swapping it out, so the engine will have to just hold on until then.
