De Quervain's Tenosynovitis | San Diego Chiropractic

Спорт

De Quervain's tenosynovitis is a conditions that affects the tendons of the thumb. Pain in De Quervain's tenosynovitis is often felt along the side/back side of thumb and the thumb side of the wrist. Grasping, pulling, typing, cell phone use, and other repetitive use of the hand can cause worsening symptoms in cases of De Quervain's Syndrome.
When looking at your hand, extend the thumb back and look at the back of the thumb/wrist. You will see a few tendons stick up which create the borders of what is known as the anatomical snuff box. The bottom border of the snuff box is the abductor pollicis longus and the extensor pollicis brevis, the two tendons affected in Dequervains syndrome.
Causes of Dequervains tenosynovitis are primarily due to overuse. Computer use, cell phone use are now leading causes for patients developing this type of wrist and thumb pain. Due to the amount of cases that are linked to cell phone use, DeQuervains is also known as, "Text Thumb". The repetitive use of the thumb causes gradual tightening of the muscles which then causes increased friction along the bones/and tendons resulting in Dequervains tenosynovitis AKA text thumb.
Treatment for De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is multifactorial. Graston Technique for De Quervain's Tenosynovitis can help ease the pain and symptoms. Graston for dequervains syndrome may also help improve blood flow to the area which can help with improving the condition. Active Release Technique can help loosen the tight musculature that causes the condition. Ultimately, text thumb exercises are what will allow for long term resolution of the symptoms; the stronger and more resilient the muscles/tendons become, the less symptoms a patient will have.

Hi guys I have this condition and its improved over 6 months. I will try the 3x sets, but whats helped me is stretching and doing forearm exercises. Lightly going to a point without too much pain is definitely a very good guide to avoid injury. Thanks all the best

Hi Patty, It does heal, you just need to stick with it and keep challenging yourself with the exercises. Tendon issues can take months and months until symptoms fully resolve. Depending on your job (or day to day tasks) it may prolong the symptoms and/or you may have symptoms off and on even though it is mostly healed up. Usually when patients notice recurring symptoms after it was gone for a period of times, they stopped stretching, strengthening, etc. while still performing tasks that stress those tendons. Hope that makes sense. Hang in there and keep working at it!

I already had the steroid injection and one year later I am still in the same position due to my job and now caring for my babies… start using your less dominant hand more often and choose electric devices to help. I’m scared to get the surgery 4 months pregnant and have a toddler and work from home. Stay safe and always ask for help even get your groceries loaded into your car. Start taking it easy.

I've seen the same videos where the doctors say that that tendon is already too overextended and it doesn't need to be lengthened.

Hi, its really timing and intent. Overall, long term resolution of symptoms will be due to targeted strengthening of the tendons/muscles. However, we find that stretching/muscle work/Graston help with short term pain, and loosening up adhesions within the knotted up, weak muscle fibers. If that was the only treatment, then the effects would be temporary/plateau because "lengthening" isn't the overall goal with this condition; that is when strength and loading are key. Hope that clarifies.
