A: The library.
Bonus: Snapcaster Mage (Flashback) vs. Remand

Me: I think I have a pretty good understanding of all the rules nuances. Dave: Replacement effects have layers too. Me: Never mind. I got this right, but maybe for the wrong reason. My logic is that Lapse says to put it on top of the library instead, so that's where it goes. Rest in Peace is irrelevant because the card never tries to go to the graveyard.

You're almost entirely right, since effectively the upper layer of Lapse means RIP no longer can replace anything. Just need to use layers to explain why Lapse must take effect first before RIP does.

I was right there with you, every word of it. RIP can't touch it because it is already gone. Post video: Had Memory Lapse been cast using Flashback it would have been exiled due to FB's rule and RIP still wouldn't have the chance to touch it. RIP RIP!

The resolution of "countering a spell" with no replacement effects is the card being put into the graveyard. RIP says *from anywhere* so it would apply, but Lapse replacement is on a higher layer.
This was like an advance math class, in that I instantly knew the right answer, but had no idea why.
I love it. The Goblins are the Replacement Effect managers and the Fairies are the Triggered Ability Managers.

The fairies put everything neatly in a whiteboard while the goblins gather everything, ask for a solution exactly once, and forget everything to start again from scractch next time they're needed. Fits perfectly.
Interesting! I didn't know about the replacement effect priority system, but the answer made intuitive sense to me so I'm glad it works that way. 🤔
I love how Control and Copy happen in opposite orders between Replacement Effects vs Layers. I know why, of course. Theres just something so oddly satisfying about it.
The Snapcaster/Remand interaction is one reason I really liked Mission Briefing when it first came out (when Remand was the counter of choice in Modern). MB only exiles the card if it would be put in a graveyard, not anywhere. If they Remand-ed your spell, you just got the card back like normal.
Learned something new today. Didn’t know about the “layers” of replacement effects, or self replacement effects. I was leaning on another new thing I learned from your channel, in that the owner of a card under multiple replacement effects is the one who chooses which effects takes place. Good to know
So basically Remand WOULD return the spell to hand (just like Lapse DOES put the spell on top of the library) but then the rules on Flashback say NOPE! Pretty interesting stuff. I knew how the interactions worked, but I didn't know why. Great insights.
Flashback is one of those abilities where reading the card does not explain the card lol.
I got the outcomes right but I was wrong about some of the details. Thanks for the full explanation and congrats on your 14th video!

It is "#14" as the video is a remake of the original DDR#14 one: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmWZyZqqdbisobQ.html (Although the original didn't include the enter-transformed trivia. That was probably an intervening rules-change, but update bulletins are a pain to search out, so not sure.)

Thanks, I just had my 3rd video last month! In all seriousness, watching my original DDR on this topic kinda makes me cringe with how bad the production value is compared to my current standard. This is one of my favorite rulings, so I did a remake to breathe some new life into it!
Snapcaster and Remand being powercrept out of Modern...I will never forgive Horizons

Huh, so Magic hires the Chaotic goblins and faeries to appear on the cards, and the Lawful ones to work behind the scenes.

Equal Opportunity employer. They release cards like that to, you should see what is stored in Washington. A fair Oko, all the functional reprints of the Universes Beyond they promised, Elish Norn that didn't just give up because Elspeth whispered "you're not worthy", etc.
Ran into a fun little one in a draft game just now: Mindslaver versus both modes of Return the Favor. Not real complicated but had to think about it for a second.
I have nailed it today boss. Not a single mistake.

Does that an unearthed creature whose end-step trigger was nullified with Obeka will still get exile when it's bounced, tucked or destroyed?

I've been playing for a long time and I thought that I could parse cards and their effects well, but then came across Volrath's Curse. Can one put it on their own creature in the hopes of having an infinite sac engine, or, since the "ignore this ability" is in the same paragraph, does the ignoring "this" ability mean that the entire paragraph effectively doesn't exist for the rest of the turn so you have a single sacrifice on any turn?
@seandun7083
8 күн бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the "ignore this effect" part means you can no longer sac stuff to it since it's part of the effect being ignored, but that seems like one that could use a rulings clarification.
@mayonaise000
8 күн бұрын
@@seandun7083that was my initial thought, but I haven't seen a specific clarification for the word ignore. It could mean "treat it as though it doesn't exist" or it could mean "it exists still, byt you get to do the thing it normally prevents you from doing"
Thank you. 1:43
mr judge hello: id like to question if i have [Out of Time] with some creatures phased out & i have [Disciple of Caelus Nin] in play, when the [Out of time] last upkeep vanishing counter is removed and sacrifice then those creatures will never phase back in - ever? Gatherer for Disciple of Caelus Nin: If an effect causes a permanent to phase out "until" some event occurs, and that event occurs while Disciple of Caelus Nin is still on the battlefield, the phased out permanent stays phased out forever.
@z_o_i_n_k_s
16 күн бұрын
Not the judge, but here is an answer. The phasing of Out of Time is a one-shot effect that generates another one-shot effect when Out of Time leaves the battlefield (CR 610.4). So, when Out of Time leaves the battlefield, its one-shot effect will be denied the chance to phase the phased out creatures in. This effect is a one-shot, so even if Disciple of Caelus Nin leaves play, the permanents will not phase in (CR 610.1). Unless another effect phases that permanent in, that permanent will remain phased out even at the start of one's untap step (CR 610.4a). There is no natural means to bring any of those cards back. But... an effect can phase them back in? How? Cast a Time and Tide!

@@z_o_i_n_k_s oh- i did not know about this card- thankyou so much!
Hey I got this one right! I got a question actually that might be an interesting video idea. If I use Nightmare Shepards effect to bring back Tymaret Chosen From Death, why is Tymaret perpetually a 1/1 regardless of my devotion to black. Why does Tymaret’ “toughness equal to devotion to black” not work anymore
@adoenlunnae872
19 күн бұрын
Tymaret has a "characteristic-defining ability" that sets it's P/T. However, by rule 706.9d, if a copy effect sets a certain characteristic as in "except it's a 1/1" , it ignores (doesn't copy) characteristic-defining abilities on the original card that would set that characteristic.
@adoenlunnae872
19 күн бұрын
Another example, if you would copy a creature with Devoid with something that also set the color of the copy, it would be that color and not have Devoid
@fieldrequired283
19 күн бұрын
In colloquial terms, it's because the effect that sets Tymaret's stats equal to your devotion is applied _before_ the effect that replaces the P/T with 1/1.

Snapcaster will be back on the menu once MH3 drops imo. That sac a blue creature alt cost counter spell has to be up his alley, right?
Wait so in the last example with Snapcaster Mage, Remand, and Lightning Bolt, why does the Snapcaster Mage still exile the Bolt, since once the Bolt moves from the stack to the hand it has changed zones and so should be a new object with no links to its previous existence?
@miserepoignee9594
19 күн бұрын
All replacement effects apply before the event they replace happens. When a replacement effect applies, it just changes what's about to happen in the game. After all the replacement effects apply, the event actually happens. The bolt therefore doesn't move until after all the replacement effects that would apply to its move have modified that event.
How does Flashback versis Remand work when compared to flashback versus Buyback then? I thought i understood that but now I don't know how/why.
@ubertuna1
19 күн бұрын
pretty sure it's because buyback specifies to return to hand instead of graveyard, so either you apply buyback first and it is overwritten by flashback, or you apply flashback first and can no longer apply buyback because the spell is no longer going to the grave
So are you saying the lightning bolt would be exiled from hand?
@SharkbaitGamer42
19 күн бұрын
It is put into exile from the stack because of the rules text of flashback, which replaces any zone the flash-backed card would go to when it resolves or fails to resolve in the case of being remanded. It's because the Flashback replacement effect is of a higher layer priority than the remand effect (I think) but also it's just how flashback works. There are very few ways to get a card that has been cast for flashback to go anywhere other than exile.
@fieldrequired283
19 күн бұрын
It's not actually going to the hand, it's just that after Remand tries to tell it to go to your hand, Flashback sees that it's about to change zones and exiles it instead.
That one was spicy.
