It’s 100% biased, I play both games and there are things Yu-Gi-Oh! does better and things MTG does better. A balanced opinion would acknowledge that magic the gathering is a lot less value for money and magic is better when played in its Commander format(so much so that one on one matches are rare at where I play). Also the video called a Dinosaur card a dragon(That’s two mouth dark ruler, it’s a dinosaur not a dragon and it’s not a popular or strong yugioh card….so I’m going to say that point is disqualified for misrepresenting yugioh in a disgusting manor!) so the video is dishonest(if he was being fair he’d have compared it to blue eyes white dragon with the anniversary card art or something that isn’t a throw away dinosaur!). I do think magic is a better game but if your going to make a Point, don’t be a sneak about it!

If you compare the TV shows made for both, YGO often has rules blunders and other confusing mistakes that make learning the game harder. On the other hand MTG has never made a TV show that inaccurately portrays the rules.

As a nationally competitive Yugioh player, I can wholeheartedly agree with this video. You also forgot the most damning part of Yugioh- the cost. If you want to play high level Magic, there are formats like Pioneer that are dirt cheap. My modern RDW cost me less than 200$ and has serious turn 2/3 kill potential. Last year I spent 880$ on a Yugioh deck that isn’t even playable anymore. Feels bad man.

People are trying. Trinity got pretty popular for a while, Junior format has its interesting gimmicks, and if you've got a couple friends willing to play on a regular basis(probably on a simulator), then there's doing that progression series/chaos draft thing that all these yugioh youtubers are doing. Friends and i had fun with that. Alternatively, there's a few very popular vintage formats that people play. Most notably GOAT and Edison, but mention should go to reaper and dragonruler formats. And konami did try and officially try and promote a few alternates themselves. The only one that got any traction was common charity, but that kind of caught fire and died. There was an attempt at a commander equivalent, but literally no attempt at balancing or moderation made at all.

To be fair, one that I've seen for Yu-Gi-Oh within the anime itself, that rarely ever gets talked about, let alone done, is playing memory with Yu-Gi-Oh. You only get to look at one card a turn, and if you correct guess what kind of card it is (spell, trap, or monster) then you get to use it instantly. Otherwise, you return it face down

Reason it's like that is because YGO text don't have keywords. That and YGO cards have to include it's cost in the description because the game doesn't use the mana system like Magic does. If YGO had such a thing, cost would not be spelled out to us, but it has to because YGO have multiple ways to make cost, Magic only has one way (sometimes another) and that's spend your mana. It is what it is.

I wish yugioh had more alt formats, it has some (namely edison, goat and traditional) but the players mostly ignore it in favor of the current format. It's a shame too because there's just so many interesting yugioh cards that get ignored for not fitting the meta.

  • @qchtohere8636

Well, there's supposedly officially sanctioned Alternative Formats since the beginning of this year: - Time Wizard - only cards until a certain point in time (in which all versions of GOAT and Edison would count as "sub-formats"). - Hearts of the Underdog - no meta cards as determined by the organizer. - Common Charity - only common cards (basically YGO's Pauper) - Deck Master - any card of your selection can be selected as Deck Master and freely summoned during any point of the duel, but if it's removed from play, you automatically lose (a stricter version of Commander). And that's besides Master Duel events, which are basically a format in itself. But yeah, Konami technically depends on the meta for sales, soooo...

Yu gi oh was my first card game and its pretty fun. Magic has more potential for fun and is a better design overall. Magic is a more stable game because you don't have to sacrifice creatures to bring out bigger creatures. If your summon fails, you can still block with small creatures.

  • @intiserkabir6848

    @intiserkabir6848

Dont know how that makes MtG a better game. There are a lot of cards in Magic that are like in YGO where you have to sacrifice them to get effects off. MtG has creatures that can only be blocked in certain conditions like flying can only be blocked by flying or reach. Yugioh makes sense when u need to sacrifice cards because you are limited to how many cards you can have on the field. While MtG there is no such thing as a limitation. MtG is a much slower game so being able to otk cant even be done even in the most popular rogue decks. So having a bigger board makes sense while pokemon and yugioh doesnt. Since both are a lot more fast phased.

@@intiserkabir6848 it's better designed. It's true that there are cards in magic that sacrifice for an effect similar to yugioh but using those abilities are not necessarily predicated on the notion of summoning a creature. A more stable game is a better experience for newer players because they're less likely to get crushed outright because 1 summon didn't work. Also there's far less text to read. Abilities are much more concise. There's also much more variety of gameplay with different game modes like commander pauper and pioneer to name a few. Yugioh isn't a bad game dont get me wrong, but it pales in comparison to how robust mtg is.

Left after one match, because of easily I lost against someone who could afford better cards, while I was stuck with ones you get from precon decks and packs, which were ALWAYS shit. Wasn't fun to even read the cards. Magic has keywords, which I can retain what they do. Trample deals damage to blockers, remaining damage to the defender. So a 6 damage is blocked by 0, you take 6. Flying is basically unblockable if you lack Reach or Flying. (wasn't even looking at the video when I wrote what Trample does). Vigilance does not tap/turn when attacking. Double trike attacks twice. First Strike is once, but before any defenders that don't have First or Double Strike. I saw...that 263 word card and remember NOTHING of what it does. I don't even understand it when reading it. The Main reason I prefer Yu-Gi-Oh to magic is the variety in aesthetics. Which I think Yu-Gi-Oh currently rules over. While yes MTG especially recently does have quite a number of aesthetic like Neon Dynasty, Streets of New Capenna, Kaldheim. Overall no matter what though it still feels like different flavors of the MTG broth, much like how while Cardfight vanguard has a lot of clans/nations with different aesthetics it's still very anime card games to the point where it's like creatures and humans in different cosplay. And a lot of people like to say that Yu-Gi-Oh is also just anime waifus and dragons Yu-Gi-Oh is the only card game where I can get VTuber Phantom Thieves, demon cursed cowboys/westerners, Sushi Battleships, Bear Gundams, classical Japanese psychic rock band, goblin pirates, a fucking Skyrim archetype. All in one place with very differing art styles and gameplay which really comes down to Yu-Gi-Oh not restricting itself now of course that same lack of restrictions is what makes Yu-Gi-Oh so much faster and complicated compared to other games but at the same time why can't we have fast Yu-Gi-Oh and slower magic at the same time, I wouldn't want magic to become Yu-Gi-Oh and I wouldn't want Yu-Gi-Oh to become magic, and while I do prefer Yu-Gi-Oh I still have a Prismari Commander deck because I just like card games and it's already a niche hobby so instead of tearing each other down let's be glad different card games exist that help to reach a wider audience to grow the community even more. See, Yu-Gi-Oh is an educational tool, that helps children all over the word to: 1) Spell awkward words (Yu-Gi-Oh, etc); 2) Count in the thousands through the attack, defense and LP numbers; 3) To read. This is the most difficult one, even master Yu-Gi-Oh players don't learn that right sometimes; 4) To think ahead. Without resources, you can just play until your hands stop working, but you need to think ahead to do it right; 5) Acceptable card size for children. It fits in a child's hands way more than a Magic The Gathering card; 6) Say things out loud. With the help of the anime, every kid that plays Yu-Gi-Oh will say the name, effect, stats and every play they do with any card at any given time, it's so cute! It's such a fun children's card game; 7) To hate Black Lotus. You see that code at the bottom right of any card? It is in fact a hash, if you played Yu-Gi-Oh for more than ten matches, you will understand through subliminal messages left in the back of the cards to decode it and to praise the Egyptian gods (the religious moms and priests were right), if you decode that code, you're given an IP address, once you go there and challenge the trials of Spells (it was Magic, but they had to change it for copyright reasons), where you will have to face the cards, and only cards, until you win, after you either win or die because cardboard doesn't have enough protein for a sustained diet, you will find the legendary script, that teaches the ultimate Budget Commander Magic The Gathering deck to counter Black Lotus, do you want to know the reason as to why the ultimate Magic deck was one of the well hidden Yu-Gi-Oh secrets? It is because no one that plays Magic would get to build that deck, as they either wouldn't play ten Yu-Gi-Oh matches, or wouldn't reas the code after being completely overwhelmed by all of the text Yu-Gi-Oh has.

We have Game Modes for that in Magic. Check out EDH[most popular mode] Vintage, and Oathbreaker(also Brawl i guess). Basically all about Big Turns, where you literally see someone get googolplex mana, six million four hundred and twenty two creatures and draw their entire deck in the process all the time, some or the other infinite combo - and usually in a very early turn - the formats can be fast as fuck. Killing 5 players simultaneously by Turn 4? Absolutely. Magic is not just 1 game, we have dozens of different game modes and different ways to enjoy the game. The game modes have different speeds, depending on what cards they allow. There's formats that don't allow any rare(usually strong) cards, or that let you always cast a specific card, formats that allow older cards and formats that limit how often you can put a card into your deck, even game modes where both players share the same deck(like dandan) etc pp

That being said I'm still having fun, because I slowly start to understand certain strategies and meta. Ive always been curious about Magic though because I missed out of it back in the days and can't wait to enjoy the different and more strategic approach of this sort of game. I don't see a problem comparing both games because they are from the same genre, but I wouldnt say one is superior over the other, since - at least for me - its not just about the technical difference, but also the aesthetics and overall style. And this is purely a matter of taste. This video is still funny, love the sarcasm :P

Counterpoint to the attack stats, a lot of them also end in 50 for the purpose of doubling the amount of possible values without doubling what the maximum value is to do it, as in 2450 beats 2400 but loses to 2500. So it is necessary to use thousands to have wide ranges without doing something silly like 24.5 or 245. Pretty much an industry standard for games that use only 1 number to determine battle outcomes. This, duel masters, vanguard, weiss schwarz, etc. That said if you wanna think that single-value combat is dumb in general, then yeah, fair point.

Ok.. how about it being framed like this.. How many 3000 attack point beat sticks are there? Now count how many 3050-3100 beat sticks there are. Odds are they just go by values of 500 (aka: 3500 and 4000 vs 3050). Why not a simple 3>2>1, etc... with either card abilities (like first strike) or clever/timely uses of cards being tie breakers? Which speaks a lot about YGO's oddly specific attack values seeking to either straight up undermine previous cards, or it's just blatant power creep in terms of attack values. We're not even mentioning the word soup that YGO cards have become. Long gone are the days of stardust dragon simply negating a destruction effect, now a card does *everything* AND takes 3 hours to read if you've never seen the card before. MTG, while being a way more mechanically complex game still leaves simplicity for newer players to grasp both the basics of the game and leaves room for deep exploration of the rules and unique corner cases. Especially considering there are more ways to play magic than there is to play literally any other card game.

The Toilet is better than the chamber pot. The semi-automatic rifle is better than a musket. The car is better than a horse drawn carriage. Etc. Let's compare 2 cards: grizzly bears, and seven colored fish. Both are vanilla creatures and have easy to follow stats. Easy right? How about this: wattchimera and the scarab God. Both have easy to follow stat lines, and as long as you know the basics of synchro summoning you can get a gist of these cards. Okay, how about this: soulflayer vs galaxy eyes photon dragon. 2 word soup type cards, yet if I've never seen galaxy eyes before I need to dedicate our match time to reading it, then assessing what I want to do (assuming I make the right choice in what to ash blossom, which is it's whole other deal) and we're just scratching the surface. And considering that YGO is a combing turn 2 kill format with no other ways of playing the game, YGO is undoubtedly inferior to the beginner friendly MTG.

Yugioh has evolved too fast for most people, and that’s fine, but it doesn’t make it objectively better or worse. Magic is more beginner friendly, but yugioh can be too, as long as you keep it casual. New players shouldn’t rush into a Pay-to-win tournament setting anyway. but that’s true for any game.

@@asnwolf4507 The semi automatic has versatility, customizability, is in common use, and more than one modality that it can be used in: Self defense, hunting, sport/target shooting, a tool, a weapon... MTG is a much more common card game than YGO is. On top of MTG having more than one way to play in MTG. When I go out into the boonies to visit family, I see MTG draft packs and baseball cards, never anything else. If the boonies ain't touching it, it's not in common use.. though I digress. The Vintage format in MTG has restrictions on the most powerful, game breaking cards in magic's history (and it's the only format where the moxes and black lotus are legal) and are very efficient and reliable assuming you have the pieces, but that's true for any card game. Just because YGO has engines in every deck so someone can make an unkillable board state in the first turn with no way for a newbie to stop it (either due to the lack of meaningful cards, or lack of meta knowledge) doesn't make it good or intelligent design. If anything that's immensely frustrating to new and old players alike. And being forced to accept a combo only meta (yes I know there are fringe decks that aren't combo, but they are fringe for a reason) is an incredibly toxic view of a *game.* Games should be, you know.. playable? Multiple turns, meaningful results with no need of how your opponents deck is supposed to work... (or at least not to the extent where you could basically play it to a "T" yourself). We all need to do a little research into the metagame every once in a while.. but if I have to do homework on every deck I have never touched because I want to make actual use of my ash blossoms, then it's gone too far. If you played pauper (MTG's cheapest competitive format, where a top tier deck is about 50 bucks), and picked an archetype like control, and then I handed you a Modern deck in the same colors and the same archetype, you'd do fairly well, since the skill transfers and you can actually read cards in a timely fashion without going into overtime. (AKA, able to actually interpret unforseen threats never seen before.) You cannot say the same for YGO because of needing to know what *exactly* the problem card(s) is. That doesn't make YGO complex from a design standpoint, it makes it unnecessarily complicated for someone trying to pick up a game of YGO. Hence, making YGO inefficient compared to MTG.

Yes I agree MTG is better and I've been playing Yu-Gi-Oh since the Pyramid of Light Movie. I love multiplayer and combat format in MTG. MGT has many different forms of dueling that are for different players. I love how people still talk to each in MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh not so much I hear. Not only that cards stay in Banish/Exile zone in MTG and there not 5 different way of summoning from the extra deck that change each year. I love how every symbol on the MTG cards matters.

the cards are smaller because the original yugioh cards were only sold in Japanese vendor machines where you pay to get a random card. They've kept the size since. Magic and yugioh are not even comparable to whoever's "better". There are a few things that are judgable however, such as complexity, mechanic variety and originality. Yugioh has far more complex mechanics and rulings which can make it subjectively less fun to those who do not enjoy the faster pace complex chess like gameplay. Whereas with magic its more overall enjoyable with a more drawn out game state with possible more potential for interaction. Which is another big thing... Interaction between players and ability to interact between plays with your opponent is a huge part of yugioh and makes the game more enjoyable. I believe both games are just as fun as the other and its all about your preference on your playstyle, what games you enjoy more. I personally think commander format for magic is the single most fun card game format I've had the pleasure of playing. But the yugioh metagame is far more fun then the standard magic rotational format.

While ygo is my first card game I learned and enjoyed, I have really want to try this because the nearest card shop in my country only sells MTG (and another card game I don’t know), and it seems like ygo is not well known in my country. Though upon seeing mtg art through this video, I would say mtg art looks better compared to ygo because in ygo, the art style is more cartoony and anime like art. Maybe, if I got the time, I would try MTG.

@@r3zaful if the power 9 got reprinted and was able to be played. Old decks and cards would be played as well. Bans are normally made to stop broken combos, the issue with Yu Gi Oh is the ban list has over 100 cards and others are limited. While Magic has a handful. The overall difference between the two is Yu Gi Oh bans cards cause the decks they are played in make it to where turn one wins are very possible and the fact that arguable around 100 cards are single handedly responsible for that is crazy. Magic’s banned cards for the most part is the power nine, which are cards that if played with right now would speed up the game drastically but even if you had a crazy turn one you still would have more turns after. The rules of Yu Gi Oh allows players to do damage outside of combat or lock your opponent out of the game before they even play a card. Some decks are so good that even if they Blossom a critical card, there is a good chance the deck can still get around that.

As someone who used to play YGO before switching to Magic, I barely played with the cards. It just wasn't fun. Then I tried three tournaments and never went further then ONE match. Why? YGO is SOLELY luck based. Your opening hand sucks? GG. You can't afford the best cards to make a deck? GG. You got nothing but weak cards? GG. Magic does have luck, but you shuffle your hand into your library if you don't have the right amount of lands, coupled with the scry rule, you have a better chance of being better off. Then you have to pick what you should do, because you can't do anything if you lack the mana. But you also need to have the right amount of lands to draw a good land/non-land ratio. What does YGO have? Good amount of monsters, traps, spells? Cool. You get your strongest on the field in 2 turns. GG. You can literally get a good deck if you buy the Dimir Guild Kit. Mill 10+ cards in one turn if you can get the right moves. And that 10 can be from a single card., YGO you just have to be faster at the game than the other person to win. There are weak cards, but outside of casual, its just what you find fun. I would have never bought as many YGO cards as I have Magic.

Amongst the many problems is the sheer amount of archetypes, the most broken ones dominates and are found everywhere, but i fell like this is also a magic thing, the problem is that: instead of buffing all older archetyeps evenly, Konami constantly buff the most nostalgia oandering ones, the HERO archetype from GX has over 300 FUCKING CARDS, not counting spells and traps, yet cant get out of the rogue tier, while somethng like heraldic beasts has barely 20+ counting egerything. While i hate and despise magic for adding space marines, i feel like their systems is a bit better on this regard. Everything else has already been pointed out.
