You could even save some more money by ordering the Thurstmaster T-flight HOTAS (which I've found to be satisfactory, and which has a few more stick buttons) and by using an Aruco headtracking setup for just the price of an old baseball cap I would probably put those extra savings towards a bit bigger of a monitor lol Thanks for your hard work!

Great video and analysis! Here's the system I'm currently using to fly DCS. I've had the CPU\MB since 2011, added the GPU a couple years ago and another 16GB RAM this year. i7-2600K 3.4GHz (overclocked to 4.2GHz) |~| MSI-P67A-GD65 |~| 32GB DDR3-1600 Corsair RAM |~| NV-GeForce GTX 1060 3GB (overclocked) |~| 2TB SSD space available. After I decided to go "ALL IN" during ED's Stay at Home sale last Spring, I was lucky enough to get a Thrustmaster T.16000M FCS Flight Pack (Stick, Throttle, Pedals) for $200 before the prices sky-rocketed. :) Found a great head-tracker with the The Puck IR from Grass Monkey Simulations for $65. It doesn't run well when settings are maxed but I've configured it now so that I can't average around 60FPS, (still trying to figure out what settings would be the best though). I've wondered if added a better video card would be worth it or just get a new CPU\MB\GPU, since my system is old enough already. I'd be up for some pointers on how to maximize my system, as it is now, if you have some. Thanks for the video and keep posting them, they are helpful more than you know.

You know, i have been getting more and more intrigued by this game but reading through a lot of the facebook groups, discord etc. I never even bothered to try it. Even purchased an xbox one s for MSFS 2020 since it was cheaper than upgrading. Anyway, installed DCS world and it runs fine on low settings on my ancient a10-7850k, 16 gig of ram and r7 360 graphics card. Am tempted to do this as it costs significantly less than a current gen console and should be able to turn up the graphics a bit more. Will certainly be more than enough to run the game for long enough to be able to save to get something of a higher spec (and turn up the graphical settings even more) in a couple of years. Thank you so much for the video.

@@samuelson76 DELL Precision T3500. Intel Xeon W3565 @3.2GHz, 12GB RAM, Nvidia Quadro FX 3800. It failed to run DCS. No surprises there. I cannot install my GTX 760 in the Precision as there are no free power cables to power the GPU. Even with cable adapters not sure if the PSU can take the load, and did not want to risk it. I use this PC for learning CAD and was unwilling to put a gaming GPU on it or risk ruining it. DCS does run on an old Q6600 with GTX 760 with 8 GB of RAM. Strange thing is GPU load is much much higher than CPU load and I do not know what that means. I am looking into upgrading to newer system with my old GTX 760 and 16GB of RAM minimum. Not going to pay insane price for a GPU due to mining demand.

@@drdonvito After trying DCS with a Q6600 running at 3 GHz with 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 760 I can say it works OK at least for simple missions and training. This way anyone can try and decide if they like it and want to invest in better hardware, or not. The GPU keeps running maxed out, so logically it should be the first component to upgrade, but with the used GPU market currently being what it is, I am not buying. I am considering another used Workstation PC with massive ammount of ECC RAM (64GB), a 3+GHz Xeon and my existing GTX 760. But I feeel that with the GTX 760 I would not be able to see much improvement. And ECC RAM is a bit slow too.So maybe it does not make sense. What do you think?

@@drdonvito Moved to i5-3470 with 12GB RAM while keeping my GTX 760. Was not impressed compared to the overclocked Q6600. I had massive FPS drops in ground bombing or busy environments. Upgraded to 32 GB RAM. Finally I was not running out of RAM anymore. Then replaced GPU with RTX 2060 I found in really good price. This does not help much with FPS drops in busy DCS environment. Then upgraded CPU to i5-3570k. Noticecable difference in FPS for sure. Then did a mild overclock at ~4GHz. I have been using a cheap SATA SSD all this time. It's an OKish setup for DCS but I would say that my biggest dissapointment is the loading times. Maybe its the cheap SATA SSD. I am playing at 1920x1200 60Hz (max resolution & refresh rate of my monitor). At this stage it's safe to say that low resolution does require a very fast CPU. And moving to something more modern with 32GB of RAM minimum and PCIe NVME would make sense. I did upgrade my T3500 with 24GB of RAM at 1600MHz, but did not bother swapping PSUs and GPUs in order to try DCS in the T3500. The CPU single core performance score is much worse compared to the i5-3570k, so it did not make any sense. But I am curious I admit.

The irony is i got interested in DCS while sourcing for a HOTAS for Star Wars Squadrons. I did not got into flight-sims out of the blue, I have been a hardcore PC gamer (mostly FPS games) for the past 20 years and already have a gaming PC. I have a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS on order (my previous HOTAS was the Saitek X-52 Pro which i sold many years ago) after getting my hands initially wet by purchasing the DCS F-16C Viper & the Persian Gulf map. By now I also have the P-47D warbird + the Syria and Channel maps. My next purchase in mind was either rudder pedals or TrackIR but I think i'm going for the TrackIR. Back in the 90s it was difficult to get into PC flight-sims even if you have a fairly good midrange PC, I remember JSF, Falcon 4.0, AH-64 Apache Longbow etc. Back to the future, DCS World is a total game changer and Im glad i found it. Truly immersive life-like flightsim with realistic graphics. This is an expensive hobby alright.

AFAIK you went further than most regreasing it -- I did the zip-ties, but I think I went a little further than you did as far as how much tension I removed -- but the biggest problem with that stick is the lack of weight on the base. It demands to be bolted to the surface of a table. Also watch out for the grip adhesives to wear out quickly. I miss the rotary knobs on the throttle the most. The stick was cool, but the spring on the pinky trigger was wonky and it squeaked for as long as I can remember. ALL OF THAT SAID it was a massive improvement from whatever garbage stick I was playing MSCFS 2 at the time

For head tracking check out Aruco marker, it's a head tracker with no assembly, cables, works well in dim light, costs 0 pesos (if you have camera).

So I’ve got a very respectful PC. 12th Gen i5 with a GeForce RTX 3050 8G, with 16 gigs of Ram becauss im running a micro atx ASUS motherboard. All I need is a HOTAS. I’m also good in the tracking department because I have a VR headset! God I’m so excited to delve 1000s of hours of my life into this

I'm been using thrustmaster t flight x for 3 years now and no issue at all, also I have bought delan clip because is cheaper option and it works very well, can't compare with trackir 5 because I have never used that one but for 50 euros I have a solid tracker with no lag or problems, all this configuration is worth 100 euro and is not that bad

Thanks for the helpful video, I'm planning on building a similar setup for dcs. Can I ask if you had any compatibility issues with the graphics card and the t3600 PSU? As I understand it, the PSU has two 6 pin PCI-E outputs and the RX480 has an 8 pin slot. Wondering if there is an easy way around this or if it matters at all?

The RX480's I have (Reference, blower style cards) only have a 6 pin slot. Either way--you can get a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter that will work just fine--if you are worried about juice, you can run an adapter off of one of the SATA power leads.

My setup is a just a tad more expensive. I picked up a hp z620 dual cpu machine at a bargain price. The dual cpu part is redundant as DCS and most other games doesn't know it exists though, Doom however does utilize the second cpu! All 32 threads! I got a pair of cheap e5-2590's anyway it had 48gb quad channel memory at 1333mhz an ssd and an rx 590 second hand. I have an x52 hotas which is ok. It works really well. I have a 75hz monitor. When flying really low over a big city I will notice it drop lower than 75 fps (msaa 2x) but even on multiplayer its marginally worse but really very acceptable. One day I will upgrade as I dip my toes into VR but I'm in no rush at the moment.

I built a dual CPU system out of the T3600's big brother, the T5600, just for funsies--32 threads of madness. Yes--some games like Doom and GTAV absolutely eat up all those threads, but DCS couldn't care less! Neat rig you built though!

16/32gb ram minimum, SSD or NVME is a must ngl, im upgrading my ram and getting a new nvme Samsung 980, i currently have a R53600 and a nvidia 970gtx 4gb, my AMD 580 8gb broke :( rip, used to run VR very well in SP, multiplayer is where the game struggles more :)

Thanks! I'm 57, know NOTHING about video games. I literally haven't played them since TRON arcade back in the 80s! I was busy! You see I was a real pilot for the last 32 years. I was Black Hawk pilot and then spent 27 yrs as an airline pilot. I recently retired early and while I don't miss airline flying, this stuff interest me. But, it is overwhelming! I wouldn't know a good graphics card from a bad one and am equally ignorant on how joysticks/throttles/pedals connect and you program all the buttons. Do you have a series on things like this for guys like me?
