In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll dig into use of the Area Weapon System, or AWS. The AWS consists of the M230E1 30mm chain gun that is mounted under the chin of the helicopter. The official rate of fire is 625 +/- 25 rounds per minute, but this is most often reduced in the field. The gun can transverse 86-degrees left and right, and it can elevate 9-degrees up when within +/- 10 degrees of the aircraft centerline and 11-degrees when outside of +/- 10 degrees of the aircraft centerline. It can traverse down up to 60-degrees.
Ammunition types include the M789 High-Explosive Dual Purpose and the M788 practice round. At early access release, the Robbie fuel tank will always be installed, and this results in a maximum gun load of 300 rounds. Later, after Early Access release, we plan to make the Robbie tank optional. This would allow a maximum gun load of 1,200 rounds. The software-supported maximum range is 4,200 meters.

For those of you wondering, the "Robbie Tank" is a small, self-sealing, fire-proof fuel tank situated directly behind the ammunition compartment. When removed it allows for auxiliary ammunition to be loaded.

Not quite accurate. A Robertson (aka Robbie) tank is an auxiliary combo-pack that holds additional fuel and ammunition. You can't just remove the fuel portion of a Robbie. You'd have to swap it out for a dedicated fuel pack or ammo mag.

Ya know, it never ceases to amaze me how people just can’t resist the urge to ask the question that we already know Wags isn’t going to answer. When… are we going to realize that this project is critical to the future of DCS and every module that comes after it’s release? It’s literally setting a new precedence in realism for pc simulation. On another note, check out the improvements in FLIR picture from the TADS. Not everything is hot anymore and there is distinguishable “color” variation between warmer and cooler objects. Excellent job ED. Bring the 64 at pilots discretion. We’re patiently waiting.

With each video i wonder, how many bindings can you fit on a cyclic and collective, to use this in VR. You would need a whole button-loaded cockpit to use this without breaking the immersion by picking up a controller just to push a button.

The Robbie tank is pretty much the standard loadout for that version of the Apache. Taking it on and off you would have to rework flight dynamics with different fuel loads, so for early access it makes sense to just stick with one.

@@bomkata 300 rounds is tons. The Mi-24P has 250 rounds and a much faster firing rate and it's plenty. The AH-64 has a slower firing rate and is turreted. How many technicals and 2 man mortar teams are you going to engage in 1 sortie? With rare exceptions your standard AH-64D Apache comes with the Robbie tank equipped because they realized the extra fuel was more useful then 900 rounds of probably unused ammo before you need to gas up again. That combined with a standard full load of 8 hellfires and 38 Hydra 70 rockets is more then enough firepower.

@@bomkata I mean at the high rate of fire in the Apache which is 625 rounds plus or minus 25 a minute (often reduced in the field) with 300 rounds you have almost half a minute of holding down the trigger. What other aircraft has that in game?

@@dannyd7714 indeed. Sad that they didn't do the stingers. It was a very real option and many other countries used it regularly. The reason the U.S. Army never employed it was because you have to sacrifice the IR early warning and we usually had air superiority anyways. Makes sense they never used it but the AH-64D was and is used by other countries who did want to use the kit. It's not like the kit never existed or never got actual use. I hope later ED changes thier minds about that. If they want it to be accurate, just limit it for the countries that didn't use it. If you set the aircraft to the U.S. in the editor, there's no option etc.

@@csdigitaldesignThe AH-64D modelled never got the wiring and doesn't have the systems to carry/employ the weapons. It would be like having the F-14B carry AIM-120s just because they integrated them onto another version and could probably put them onto the F-14B if they wanted to.

  • @csdigitaldesign

@@sheeplord4976 while it's true the U.S. never used the kit, there was a kit from Boeing available that was actually tested by the U.S. Army and not only that but later adopted by other countries that we exported the AH-64D to as a standard loadout. This included a control box that was attached in the cockpit, the wiring harness and launchers mounted to the winglet tips. So no, it's not like giving the F-14B Aim-120s because no such kit was made for that. My argument it's that while the U.S. Army never deployed the stingers, other countries using the AH-64D did. What if I want to simulate using an Apache from Japan? Because that was one country that deployed use of this kit. South Korea also operates the AH-64D with stingers as well. "In August 2001, the AH-64D was selected by the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force with a requirement for 55 helicopters. The Apache for Japan is designated AH-64DJP and is armed with Stinger air-to-air missiles." www.army-technology.com/projects/apache/ "Starting in the 1980s, the Stinger and AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and the AGM-122 Sidearm anti-radiation missile were evaluated for use upon the AH-64.[71][72] The Stinger was initially selected; the U.S. Army was also considering the Starstreak air-to-air missile.[71][73] External fuel tanks can also be carried on the stub wings to increase range and mission time.[42] The stub-wing pylons have mounting points for maintenance access; these mountings can also be used to secure personnel externally for emergency transport.[74] Stinger missiles are often used on non-U.S. Apaches, as foreign forces do not have as many air superiority aircraft to control the skies.[75] The AH-64E initially lacked the ability to use the Stinger to make room for self-defense equipment, but the capability was added back following a South Korean demand" en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_AH-64_Apache Basically, the reason the U.S. Army didn't use the kit was because they didn't need it. The U.S. already had air superiority in the majority of any theaters they employed the AH-64D and thus keeping the IR early warning system which would of needed to be ditched was far more useful to them. Other countries however did not have this luxury.

While the Robby tank can hold 300 rounds, the Ammo Handling System from the Robby tank to the gun can hold another 30, and since each tray from the ammo can hold 11 rounds a typical load is 330 rounds.
