Day Trip to Lubbock 🏈 (FULL EPISODE) S6 E3
THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS on October 13, 2014. Some of the locations may have changed. Check thedaytripper.com for the most up-to-date information.
For those that think Lubbock is only for Red Raiders and Panhandlers, they better think again. It turns out the “HUB CITY” has much more to do than it may let on.
The most well-known attraction in Lubbock is definitely Texas Tech University. Campus is absolutely worth a walk-around for its Spanish Renaissance architecture and numerous landmarks. Start at the Will Rogers statue that was installed with its rear end facing directly toward College Station. That’s something all college football fans can get behind (except for Aggies, that is). Then head over to the Blarney Stone which is allegedly a piece for the real Blarney Stone in Ireland that bestows eloquent speech on all who brave a kiss.
Just like a good Red Raider should, if you are looking to educate yourself Lubbock has lots of first-class museum. Your first stop should be the Buddy Holly Center honoring Lubbock’s own rock and roll legend who’s impact goes way beyond the panhandle, and even Texas. At this museum you’ll see all kinds of personal items of Buddy’s, including his famous glasses!
Take a trip back 12,000 years at the Lubbock Lake Landmark, one of the most important archaeological sites in the new world marking evidence that people have lived in this area of Texas since the Clovis age. Check out this site to learn about the folks that have called this place home for thousands of years.
Hundreds of prairie dogs live in their own little furry town within this bigger city at Prairie Dog Town of MacKenzie Park. The “town” was first started in the 1930’s by the Clapp family, and has grown into one of Lubbock’s biggest must-see sites. Visit Prairie Dog Pete and his fuzzy little friends to see them in their natural habitat as they scurry and scutter across the land.
If you are looking for the grub that keeps the college kids fed, just cross the street from Tech to find Spanky’s. Now you don’t have to be enrolled in classes to enjoy the cold beer and greasy beer here. And whatever you order, don’t miss eating some of Spanky’s signature ooey gooey fried cheese.
This one guy from Italy defintiely makes the best calzone in Texas. Not only are the calzones cheesy and stuffed with meaty goodies, but they are also bigger than your head. So get ready for a major food coma, and head to this must-stop in Lubbock.
When the panhandle heat gets to you, take a dip in Buffalo Springs Lake, the “oasis of West Texas.” This spring-fed lake is tucked away in an amazing canyon just east of Lubbock. There are some excellent swimming beaches, some excellent hiking trails and even a jumping tower for the daring.

You don’t have to go to Prairie Dog Town. Just drive down any road that has vacant land on it in Lubbock. They’re ALL over the place… even squashed in the roads.
You definitely need another trip to Lubbock! You got Buddy Holly Hall, Evie Mae’s BBQ, Two Docs Brewery, Brewery LBK, LHUCA, Llano Estacado Winery, McPherson Winery, Dunbar Lake, Silent Wings Museum, National Ranching Heritage Center.

@@arathh19 I use to work at Tai Peppers back in 2014. The owners were very kind. I just learned maybe a year ago that the husband (Kool) passed away :( I don’t live in Lubbock anymore but if I ever pass through there, I definitely will try Mams place :)
My Mom is from Floydada. If we got to go to Plainview that was a treat. If you got to to Lubbock....that was special for people from those small towns
Golly, Texas sure is big
As mentioned, The Buddy Holly Hall is a world class theater for music and plays. Lubbock is the Hub of the South Plains and if you look at old pictures from the air with the Loop and all the roads coming into the center of town is looked like a wagon wheel. Mac Davis is from here; John Denver went to school here among others and just up the road is Littlefield the home of Waylon Jennings.

Welcome home. We are a great town.
After going to tech for 6 years, I Haven't been back to Lubbock for about 13 ish years, but this pretty much nailed it. Food places and all.

There are so many restaurants now. Lubbock has 0.88 restaurants per 1000 people and the national average is 0.58. That's about all there is to do is go out and eat.
Love this... moved to Lubbock a couple years ago from Austin... defiantly different

Just found this channel, and it's already one of my favorite. Y'all gotta keep bringing more to Lubbock! Cheers ya'll~
My mom was a nurse at what is now Grace hospital . She took care of Buddy Holly 's mom and wife . My Dad knew Buddy from the fights he would get into at the Hi-de-ho resturant in Rotan. The only person you didnt bring up was Mac Davis? Lubbock has a lit a great things going for it and you covered a lot of them but would love to see more. We have Pedro Tamales and a lot of other great places as well. Over all though you mentioned some great things and its the best Vlog I have seen on Lubbock so thank you so much for that♥️ just subbed
10 year update..still get fried cheese.😂
I was a police officer at Buffalo springs, and used to have to yell at jumpers all the time, lol.
Most consider it the South Plains rather than the panhandle.

It's the Southern high plains of the Lanno Estacado tableland specifically, where the frontier South and Midwest overlap with the Old Wild West to form a very uneque region.

Yet there is the Panhandle South Plains Fair. It's the South plains of the Panhandle. Most people here call it West Texas. 😊
My neighbor in the Tech ghetto was one of Jerry's first employees. We got a lot of discounted and free pizzas back then. Kudos to One Guy's for making it big! Peace, Love!!

But he hasn't been in that location for 40 years. Late 80's when I lived in University Center across the street, it was a Bookstore, a Newstand. I would get my Houston Chronicle newspaper there every Sunday. Bought many paperbacks, magazines from there. I recognize that corner big time, and it wasn't a Pizza place 40 years ago like they said in the video.

Same street but other corner across the street. They had to move across the street when the University Plaza sold and canceled all leases while they remodeled. For a year or so there was no One Guy's there at all until that book store went out of business and One Guy's moved in.
Raider! Power! Raider! Power! Raider! Power!
This was very informative for me, especially since I live in Lubbock and didn’t know a lot of this stuff. 👍🏽🤷🏽♀️
Gotta love The Daytripper! Great episode ❤
As a Lubbock-ite, I approve
Home sweet home sadly moved from there couple years ago I sure do miss it
Dario from One Guy's has his own restaurant now called Dario's . Joe ran the place into the ground and it sold eventually. There's no one from One Guy's working there any longer. The best Calzone is at Dario's now.

@@joshmartinez3685 I could see that happening because it's so good it's worth waiting for. That's why they are so busy. They often cook hundreds of calzones and pizzas in a day for businesses here in town. Dario will always take care of his customers. Big or small.
Buddy Holly made more songs in a short career more than anybody else
I learned to ski on Buffalo Lake
Need to come back when football season comes around. Meet up with some of the students and locals. Y’all nailed a lot but missed a bit.
Interesting Video. One thing wrong though. That One Guys pizza has not been on that corner for 40 years. Back in the late 80's that corner spot was a bookstore. I lived in the University Center right across of the street from there. Bought many a paperback, magazine, and my Houston Chronicle newspaper there every Sunday.

UHHHHHH, I'M SORRY, but uhhhhh, Yeah....SON (I'm about same age as you, 30-35.) You can't wear a cowboy hat and drive a Subaru. Live in TX, but I'm CO with a farm/range. Although I wore one when I drove my SC RR...
You should of came on a Saturday in the fall
The 5th wheel? ….. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Old timers will tell you that Buddy Holly was not that popular in Lubbock when he first started out because he played rock and roll instead of the country and western music that was popular in Lubbock.

What's a "Thea-ahter"???😂😂😂
There is nothing to do here but eat. I wish we had a zoo, an aquarium, an amusement park… anything!! Don’t get me started on the sad excuse of a mall. There is no entertainment here so kids just get in to trouble.
