Day Trip to El Paso 👢 (FULL EPISODE) S5 E1
THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS on October 3, 2013. Some of the locations may have changed. Check thedaytripper.com for the most up-to-date information.
El Paso is like a well-seasoned cast-iron skillet. It's crusted with history and rugged outdoors, seasoned with unique personalities and contains some pretty delectable food. Head to the edge of Texas to explore all the fun to be had in this West Texas town.
If you’re like me, you’ll want to enjoy the natural side of town, so head to Franklin Mountains State Park and enjoy some of this amazing mountain range considered to be the southern-most tip of the Rocky Mountains. A hike to the Aztec Caves is well worth the effort and this state park is also a great place for rock climbing.
UPDATE: Currently closed
Instead of hiking, you can take the easy way up and enjoy the mountains (and city) from 5,632 feet high atop the Wyler Aerial Tramway. You’ll be able to see for miles into Texas, New Mexico and Mexico - it’s definitely a must-stop on any trip to El Paso!
I recommend starting off your journey through town by learning about the culture of the “Boot Capital of the World,” beginning with the Magoffin Home, an 1874 adobe house built by the 4-time mayor of El Paso Joseph Magoffin. I don’t know of any other adobe homes in Texas that rival the interesting beauty of this one.
For more history, trace your steps to the Wild West side of town and visit the historic Concordia Cemetery, holding the graves of the famous and infamous inhabitants of El Paso, including gunslinger John Wesley Hardin. It’s both eerie and educational!
Of course, no trip through the “Boot Capital of the World” would be complete without stopping at one of the many boot shops in town. Learn about its boot-making heritage by visiting one of the Lucchese or Tony Llama stores, or to see custom boots unlike any other, head to Rocketbuster Boots where they make custom boots that are basically art for your feet.
Being a border town, the influence of El Paso’s sister city of Juarez is everywhere. You can see the Texas-Mexico line for yourself at Border Monument Number 1 or you can simply eat your way through Mexican culture at one of the many AMAZING Mexican food restaurants all over town. I highly recommend L&J Cafe where you can eat green sauce enchiladas made the same way since they first started serving them in 1927 - and they’re still just as delicious.
Forget the outward appearance and ignore the simple decor inside this fast-food, rolled-taco joint, if you follow the masses of locals that swear by Chicos Tacos, you’ll most certainly find the most addictive food in the city. These cheesy, soupy tacos might just make convince you to move to El Paso.

Come and visit Central Texas. Somehow, Tex-Mex cuisine embraced a wonderful Puerto Rican dish, Carne Guisada. Breakfast Tacos or a plateful with Beans, Rice & Tortillas. I love it for any meal of the day.

As an el paso native of all my 23 years on earth you did our city justice well done!
El Paso is a great City with Great People. I was stationed out there 1997-2000 Training Marine Corps Reservist. Loved it.
I never thought I’d miss El Paso, but I really do. It’s so different, but in a good way. It’s also a ridiculously safe and affordable city.
Glad you loved our city! We need more people showing love like this
How is it you did not see the The Giant El Paso Mountain Star. 😂
I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could. And still here after 5o years!!! I love it here...

I live in Austin but I was born and raised in El Paso next time I need you to drive a little outside the city limits when your head back east El Paso to a small suburb called Horizon and go to a hidden gem not even all the locals know about called Tacos El Charley and get a mix of different tacos . Also if you’re in far east El Paso there is a Mexican bakery that outdoes even the OG bakeries called El Prado bakery it’s something you can’t go without trying.

Excellent job! Best El Paso tour I've ever watched. You missed a few spots, but it would've been hard to squeeze all in just one day. I am so happy that you were able to go to the tramway (hard to believe, but hidden gem not many people knew about it), sadly no longer working.
Born and raised in EP and my dude, your little hat and mustache intro completely embodied my high school freshman English teacher. I mean you nailed it. Mr. Bruns

We had a Mr. Bruns in high school, with a moustache, but he wasn't the teacher, he was an academic counselor. Our principal Mr. Watts was tall and lean and dressed like a cowboy. It was hilarious to see him walking down the hall and his cell phone would go off with "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" ringtone.

Thanks for doing a Day Trip to El Paso!!!
I came back for a reason, love chuco 🖤
I love El Paso I even live here
Thank you for showing El Paso love
This was very interesting for me! My grandma was from El Paso. She was also a caterer. And her Mexican food sounded like what you experienced!
You made the same mistake most newbies make: you tried to stab the taco to raise. Think this way: you are on the floor of a carpet warehouse and you want to move rolls of carpet around. Your forklift (your fork) slips into the end of the roll of carpet to lift it up.
By that “Border monument #1, around the bend by the railroad tracks there’s parts where u can see dinosaur tracks. When I was attending UTEP our Geology final was to go there and find them with a map the professor gave us. I’m from EL Paso and I still live here.
i miss el paso 😢

Awesome episode Chet. We are watching all your KZread stuff! Good job from home town fans!
Watching your videos nonstop here after following and liking. Met you in Fort Worth shortly after my move to Texas. A friend of mine who’s from El Paso was a USCG who freed freighters frozen in Lake Michigan from ice and snow stationed in Charlevoix Michigan.
Thank you for showing the beauty of my city.
Happy to be living in El Paso❤❤❤❤
Thank you for visiting and highlighting all the attributes of El Paso🤗. I love this place.
Dude, you missed the Star on the mountain 😥
Man those are only the amazing places to visit. The individual stories of everyone in El Chuco is something else. The stories about El Barrio and others like it can literally be made into a colorful film. My own family is a reservoir of stories that'd be beautiful, intense, and magical to watch in the silver screen. love you guys for showing my home and the people some love. it's extremely underrated. Bless up!!!
Another masterpiece, makes me wanna go to El Paso!
I hope EP gets another episode, so many more things show! The Mansion belonging to J.J. Arms, Chamizal and Ascarate Parks, UTEP Sun Bowl, Fort Bliss, etc… I owe my childhood and part of my adolescence to that great city 🫶🏼.

Got to get back to The Little Diner in Canutillo. That's THE place for authentic gorditas. Nothing else beats it.
I must admit that I do not comprehend the widespread popularity of Chico's tacos among some of the local populace. Although I was raised in El Paso, I never developed a taste for them. In my opinion, the article overlooked several other noteworthy locations, including the Cattleman's ranch/ steakhouse.
Am happy you enjoyed it in El Paso:)

Love EP
I lived in EP 2013-2017 and loved it. I didn't realize this was a throw-back episode and thought, "Yay! The tramway is open again!" No such luck... permanently closed. I never even tried Chico's... heard too many horror stories! My go-to place was Kiki's Restaurant. Also, if you like history, the Historic Mission Trail is great. I used to bike the length of the trail back in the day!
If you ever come back, I would recommend Scenic drive and Bowie bakery. Thanks for visiting!
El Paso, or as I like to think of it, actual Texas
Amazing episode! Great job you nailed it! Really made me homesick for my hometown! Here’s some places you missed.. Ft Bliss, The Chamizal, The Missions, Licon Dairy, Bowie Bakery, and the star on the mountain.
"It's the only taco you can drink" omg so true 😂😂 I love Chicos. BTW the tramway has been closed for a couple of years now I guess this video was filmed a while back. Still hoping they open back up soon it's a real treasure going up there and seeing our beautiful city ❤

@@EricaGametI’ve been following the tramway’s revitalization. It cost $10M to repair, and (thankfully) the State Representative from El Paso asked the legislature for the money. Even though Texas Parks and Wildlife has the money, it will take several years before it’s open because they’re moving it to a completely new place.
Excellent El Paso showcase! You need to take a short trip across to Juarez, yo will find interesting places just a few steps in once you cross trough the downtown Juarez-El Paso international bridge.
This is awesome. As an el Pasoan? I’m proud of the info you’ve given… Tramway is temporarily closed for refurbishment tho

Bro really went to Chico's Tacos
Someone asked me once online if El Paso had Tex-Mex. I told him, "BETTER! We have Mex-Mex!"
El Paso?! "I spent one month there one night." El Paso🤣
To understand what the Chico's Tacos sauce tastes like: One 8oz can of Herdez Casera salsa. One 8oz can of tomato sauce. 2 quarts of water. Boil for about 20 minutes. Also makes a good base for tortilla soup.

The Franklins ate geologically considered part of the basin and range geographic province. They were formed entirely independent of the Rocky Mountain chain.
