Day Trip to Hakone from Tokyo: Volcanic Valley, Black Eggs and Pirate Ships!

One of the most popular destinations for a day trip from Tokyo, Hakone is a hot springs town full of beautiful views and tasty treats. Shizuka travels up mountains, over lakes, and through the shrines of Hakone to visit places offering unique Hakone food, like coal black onsen eggs and “power” mochi.
Shizuka begins her adventure by exploring an active volcano, and trying the black onsen tamago, or hot springs eggs, that the area is famous for. Then, she travels across the lake on a pirate ship, and reenacts some of her favorite boat-related movie scenes. After her Oscar-worthy performance, she enjoys a Japanese hot pot and grated mountain yam. Finally, she explores Hakone shrine and ends up at a cha-ya (tea shop) that’s stood the test of time.

I spent my birthday in Hakone last month during my vacation and it was a great experience. You definately had better weather because when we were on the ropeway up to Owakudani, there was a solid wall of fog that you couldn't see through. Owakudani was also covered in fog but it lifted several times for a few minutes so people could take pics.

Ever since I watched Sonny's (Sunny's?) episode of BEFRS with Shizuka where he mocks her saying "ooOoo", I have become hyper-aware of it and notice every time she says it 😆

The wide open decks are probably great, but seing those massive super-tacky pirate ships on Lake Ashi hurts my eyes 🙇‍♂ "...pretty much everything there is to see in Hakone..." I would have added the Hakone Open Air Art Museum to that, but that's me, I'm artsy... Amazake Chaya did look quite good 🙏

Hello! I'll be heading from Odawara to Gora followed by rope way to Togendai. Am I allowed to carry one bagpack and a hand held duffle bag on this route? ( I don't want to ship them or use a locker) My plan is to finish the cruise around Lake Ashi and head to Mt.Fuji station where I have my hostel booked for the night. Wondering if any luggage restrictions? And will time be sufficient to travel ? Please share your opinion. Many thanks 😊

You can get there from different stations, we recommend taking the cable car from Sounzan station (10mins) and then taking the cable car from Owakudani to Togendai station (10mins), from Togendai you can take the boat to Hakone shrine:)

Do you have to make a reservation in advance for the pirate ship or can you buy a ticket right there and use it immediately?
