The Shite Guide to Provo: A History of Amsterdam’s Counter Culture Revolution of the 1960s.
March 10, 1966: There is to be a Royal Wedding in Amsterdam between Princess Beatrix and the ex-German soldier Claus - a happy day for the monarchy. But lurking in the crowds is the revolutionary hipster crew called PROVO, who have sworn to overthrow the system and Dutch society by means of The Happening. The Day of the Monarchy descends into a Day of Anarchy.
This is the first episode of a 13 part series in which we'll take a deep dive into the characters and shenanigans of the coolest, funniest and most bizarre revolution of the 60s, and find out how a ragtag group of students, anarchists, artists, wizards and weirdos turned Dutch society on its head and ushered in a new era of madness and freedom by attacking the state with their hilarious and nonsensical guerilla street theatre, and transformed Amsterdam from a grey, provincial capital into the ground zero of 1960s Europe’s counter culture - The Magic Centre.
One man prophecised that every weirdo in the Western World would make their way to Amsterdam and sleep on Dam Square, have sex in Vondelpark and smoke weed in the streets. And his prophecy came true.
In each episode we'll take a spicy peep at the grooviest story you've never heard, the missing link between the Beats and the Hippies.

I was listening to a book on Amsterdam by Russell Shorto. There's a whole chapter on Provo movement. After searching to see anything about these events I found your great channel.

Good to be back! This first episode is a little confusing but it gets easier over the next episodes. It's about to get a whole lot spicier. The lad who drilled a hole in his head to stay high forever, dropping weed seeds from hot air balloons, ordering chickens to march to Vietnam to end the American massacres, the first naked lady on the television, taking over a church to turn it into a hippy party house etc.

Amazing how many former enemies and victims of the Nazis turned Nazi once the war was over. Loving this series, will ko-fi 🧙♂
In the background of the The Dokwerker statue is the Portuguese Synagogue from 1675. The February Strike was triggered by and explicitly against the Germans persecution of the jews. The Anne Frank House in the background later on when it's about the police is a nice touch though. Another gem anyway, videos like these are KZread's true calling , looking forward to the next 12 episodes.

Too right, I should have put a little more context in there regarding the Synagogue. The photos used in the montage are mainly from the roundups that happened on that very square. The absolute horror and madness of it all.

@@shiteguides The shots are great, it's just not that recognizable as a Synagogue, and looks centuries younger than it is anyway. I just wanted to give the Ferbruary strikers all the credit, as much as the Dutch police represented cowardice, conformism and evil during the German occupation, the February Strike represented courage, solidarity and humanity.
