The Shite Guide to Provo: A History of Amsterdam’s Counter Culture Revolution of the 1960s.
Every revolution needs to start somewhere, and in Amsterdam in the mid 60s, it began with a wild mad man called Robert Jasper Grootveld.
The Anti-Smoking Magician / Anti Rook Magier was the fuse that set the city alight and gathered the floating youth to his weekly Happenings where his insane sermons used the Dada artistic technique of participatory art to attack the plastic society of the Western World.
He prophesised that Amsterdam would be transformed into the centre of Europes counter culture, and all the wizards and weirdos of the western world would arrive in the city to sleep on Dam Square, have sex in Vondelpark and smoke weed in the streets. And his prophecy came true.
In each episode we'll take a spicy peep at the grooviest story you've never heard, the missing link between the Beats and the Hippies.

Yo yo, groovy cats. I'm wondering if people would have an appetite or any interest if I started a podcast alongside this series to get deeper into the story and add all the extra context and cool stuff that couldn't fit in the videoes. He gets a second episode a little down the line for when he turned the citizens and city of Amsterdam into the players and setting of the Great Marihuette Game, in which he overwhelmed the police to such a degree that they began the tolerance of cannabis. It's truly bananas.

I had heard of Provo before and how it brought change to the city of Amsterdam and helped make it what it is. Nice to learn about the players that made it happen. Can't wait for the next installment

I still have to finish a few so I think I'll do them in groups of four with a few weeks in between each set, so 2 more to come the next 2 weeks.
Reminds me of USCO, an Art Collective working the psychedelic scenes of New York in the early 1960s. I've been studying the connection to Marshall McLuhan's 'Medium is the Message' and the rise of Happenings and acid culture. The Dutch connection might be poet Simon Vinkenoog who knew Gerard Stern and Steve Dunkee, who got acid from Leary, Albert and Metzner who lived at Millbrook estate at the time. Cool to see the Dutch side of the Psychedelic Revolution doing very similar tactics as their New York friends. Another top notch video. Looking forward to more Anarchist history!

The Happening originated in New York and made its way to Amsterdam where it transformed and migrated back to New York, which then developed their own version of the Provos. There's an audio reading of Allan Kaprow's 'How to Make a Happening' available to listen to online. Simon Vinkenoog features heavily in an upcoming epsidode, and actually organised the very first Happening in Amsterdam, along with a young medical student who tried to stay high forever by drilling a hole in his head.

@@shiteguides Hugo Bart Huges of course whose Trepanation theories influenced Amanda Fielding to do the same thing. She is currently a leading Psychedelic Researcher in England and helped usher in medical legalization with a lot of hard work. Small world isn't it?

Took me about 2 years to track down all the footage available. There was a Japanese TV crew who made a program in 1966 but it's lost to the winds of time. And also I can't speak Japanese so I couldn't find it.
