Day in the life of an HVAC Apprentice - Part 1 - (Career change) Cooling Maintenance Indoor Unit
Ғылым және технология
HVAC apprentice Julius spends his first day out in the field with me.
We spent the day training, completing several cooling maintenance calls and just talking about why Julius decided to switch careers and start this job in the HVAC industry with no prior experience.
As many of you know, HVAC is a challenging but rewarding career, with a ton of opportunities, so it's great to see young people entering the profession. Stay tuned to see how Julius's career progresses!
Let me know in the comments if you have any advice for young people entering the HVAC trade?
Thanks for watching!

Julius is fast on the uptake, asks good questions and we can see him connecting concepts. Yeah, he should do installs first but his real love is going to be service troubleshooting. In another 3 years he'll have his own YT channel.

Thanks Im trying. Appreciate the complement.
I like how well you explain your process of serviceing the equipment, and why you do it. I have been an hvac tech for over 40 years now. Firmly believe that new employees all should do installs first before service, they gain a better understanding of the big picture and improve their skills along the way. You seem like a great guy to mentor the newbies, keep up the great work. Continued success in the future.

I'm currently enrolled in my local college's HVACR program and excited to learn. its fun looking ahead to what my internship may look like and hope to get a mentor like you. I'm excited to get into the industry and feel like I'm learning enough to almost be useful at this point. it seems like guys out in the field learn a little quicker than being stuck in a 25 guy lab with one instructor lol. love videos like this and I went and looked at what static pressure was as its not something we've covered yet. -cheers

I start my apprentice in January with Cardnial heating and cooling and man am I nervous been working over a year in food service and I just knew hvac among a few other trades had my interest. I guess I'm just worried I'm not gonna gather all of it right away and I don't wanna be that guy that's still struggling to catch it. The apprentice is 5 months long 5 days a week 8 hours. Any advice or things I should be doing to prepare myself?

You can get whatever information you want on utube. 30 years ago, we had nothing. Even service manuals were hard to come by. You had to pay for them. They were not cheap. Techs have it a lot easier now, but the equipment is also a lot more complicated.

Hey there! I appreciate the compliments I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Best thing I'd say to do is try to start with a small company cuz you're more likely to appreciate your clothes and they will advance you as you develop. Also always be studying focused heavy on electrical. Stay tuned I've got a video should be dropping this week covering this topic👍

They threw me into a truck with a clipboard full of invoices . No training or instructions at all. 30 years later I am still alone by myself with no training.
Ive just recently become some what interested in pursing this particular trade. Does one jump straight to apprenticeship, or do I have to go through a school first?
@HVACTechKnowledgy

I'd go straight for the apprenticeship. School is a waste of time in my opinion. As a matter of fact just apply for an entry level position at a small company and get paid to learn.👍

I would try to start off at a smaller company to learn the ropes. Most small owner operators will hire you without experience as long as you show your willingness show up and your trying to learn.

So I graduated hvac school but I've been really nervous to leave to work in hvac. Tbh I think feel like I'm not ready and starting to have second thoughts if I made the right choice.

I usually recommend just getting job at a smaller outfit and working your way up from there. You can advance pretty quickly if you put in the work with smaller companies because they're going to place you where you're most valuable. So essentially whatever discipline you choose to excel at that's what they'll have you doing.
I got a new return grille 20x20 and it's alittle smaller than my current old one and the filter is snug that I used to see how it fits, also I've searched for wider dimensions but none that goes to 23 on the outside, It's not in yet I need help on what to do
@HVACTechKnowledgy
Жыл бұрын
The Snug fit is actually good as long as you're not having to bend and distort the filter to get it in. What are the exact dimensions on the new filter grill?

So is the filter just not fitting properly in the new grill? Also what made you decide to replace the filter grill in the first place just curious?
@miamonroe4195
Жыл бұрын
@HVAC Tech Knowledgy yes it wasn't fitting but I noticed there was a bend one bottom corner blocking the filter from going all the way in ,and I if could show you you'd see why lol but the current one is older ,dirty after cleaning and has the turn opening latches ,one is broken
@HVACTechKnowledgy
Жыл бұрын
Okay cool I know how it is those things can get pretty grimy lol. Sounds like the frame is just been a little bit, if you can bend it back that would be the ticket or just try to take it back and get one that's square.
How is Julius doing now ?
Anybody got any HVAC PDFs they can share

It’s solid! I love the Carolinas. I’ve lived in New York and Florida and I probably wouldn’t appreciate those climates very much. The temperature here swings aren’t too extreme winters aren’t too cold summers aren’t crazy hot. A lot of crawlspaces though. There’s also alot of population growth, so companies are always hiring.
