Day In The Life of a KITCHEN PORTER | London - Goldman Sachs

Ойын-сауық

My day as a Kitchen Porter at Goldman Sachs, 8 hours shift.
I give a breakdown of a day in the life of a Kitchen Porter.
Performing the tasks no one else wants to do - cleaning nasty messes,
scraping remnants of people’s meals into growing garbage, ensuring chefs
have what they need to turn ordinary food into extraordinary meals.
One has to wonder: "who are these restaurants industry underdogs, who choose
to clean up our mess? And what makes them tick?"
There's purpose in every season of life... you just have to look for it.

Yeah! The kitchen is a stressful, psychological place to work. If you don't have passion for it, you will hate the job, sooner or later. I appreciate your comment. You definitely one of those chefs that KPs love!

When I was a KP, I always appreciated the chefs who started as KPs. They always made me feel appreciated. For example, some of them always apologised when they brought pots and pans which were severely burnt. A simple "sorry", or "thank you" goes a long way.

Porter's are the soul of the kitchen. They keep it together for the cooks. I remember going off the line after a long rush and sending the porter on a nice lunch/dinner break and I covered for them, most of the time I stayed well after they returned to help clear everything, and I was the chef. I found it very relaxing.

Then I think with experience you understand when to work hard and when to chill. Sometimes places take advantages of your skills and decide to not hire another person cause you are enough for the job... which most of the time is not the case, especially in the hospitality sector, which will end up affecting your mental and physical health. Kitchen Porter usually do the basic preparation. Like pealing potatoes, cleaning certain type of sea food or vegetables. Mainly are the easiest and most annoying job that a chef won't do cause of the high quantity of time you have to spend behind those, and literally you get bored after 2 consecutive day of doing it. Look for a kitchen that make's you do something new everytime, I remember how fun it was to just to something different like frying things.

Yeah for sure! Most of my job I found them through the agency called www.coople.com/uk/ . There are many like this in London. So the more you have, the more chances you have to get a job. For the kitchen porter role, I would say the best thing you can do is having a 4 hours trial, show them how you work, and socialize with as many people as possible there, show them you are happy to work for them. Interviews for KP are not that difficult at all. Speaking English is already a huge plus. As many KP don't usually talk English, from my experience. I would recommend you to work on yourself meanwhile you have the KP job. You don't want to clean dishes for the rest of your life! Hope I helped you! If you have more question, I'm around :) .

I'm a climber; so there is a loot of upper body work involved. Mainly is a lot of pull ups, but if you want to increase your muscle mass, which will affect your strength as well (In the good way). Do the 5x5, with 80 to 90% of your MR (Maximum Repetition). Once you are happy with the body mass and the size of your muscle, then you can start to add high repetition and calisthenics, to get shredded. But the main thing is the motivation, the consistency; that is at the end of the day what will bring result in the long term. Work for the health benefit, for the sake of staying mentally healthly. Wait for the body result, be patient, once you will see result you will be hyped up and no one else can stop you once you got those result kicking in! IMPORTANT: choose whatever motivation you want! I started working out to get more attractive on the eye of the girls. Now I do it for myself cause it feels good. What's your workout routine?
