In this spouse spotlight, we follow Kelsey on her "Day in the Life" after moving to Bavaria (Vilseck) Germany from the USA.
Fun fact, I used to be EXTREMELY nervous going through the military base gates and handing them my ID card. I literally thought I’d get yelled at for anything or quizzed on my military knowledge before entering!
Our move from the states to Germany meant I not only had to learn German culture, but also military culture because this is my first official duty station with my husband. Learning one of those is hard enough, but both? Wow!
We’ve lived here for over a year now and I can confidently say I am way more comfortable with daily life, yet I still get nervous on occasion. I have a low level knowledge of German and a medium level knowledge of Army acronyms, but want to know a secret? It’s okay to now know it all!
I can willingly admit to anyone that I’m still learning, and always will be. People will be more than happy to help you out. If you’re okay accepting that, then the move to Germany will be great!
The military community is an incredible one if you lean into it. I highly recommend getting involved as soon as you move. The best way to do that is to think of something you love to do right now, then find it here (or as close to it).
I decided to find a CrossFit gym, which is where I learned about the volleyball Open Gyms on base. This lead me to coaching middle school kids, and now I’m the high school JV coach!
There is something for everyone, and it can get exhausting trying to find at times, but don’t let it deter you. Keep asking questions, googling, and putting yourself out there!
