I think Jane Austin was the greatest writer of the ‘boring’ and ‘mundane’, and just think of the insights (as well as the sheer entertainment value) that she provides into the human character. Never trivialize what you are doing, Ali, as it is both supremely entertaining and also calming, warming and comforting. It reminds us of the fact that we are all the same in many ways in a world that seems to be seeking to alienate us from each other.

Jane Austen really was good at that! I need to read more Austen. Thank you for saying that, I cut out a whole ramble saying something similar about how we are all just normal people and how lucky we are to find connections 🥰

I realize it's a very British thing to apologize for everything... however, when I am completely invested in your video and pausing and going back so I don't miss a second if I get distracted, I feel a slight bit of shame at the end when you apologize for it being "boring" or "nonsense". Because I thoroughly enjoy watching the shopping, book talk, cooking, talking, knitting, "whittering". Sending you "Good Enough" vibes from the US, and hoping you never feel that you're not, in fact, good enough. 😘

Hi Ali! First off, I would not call what you do with this podcast nonsense. You show a slice of life from the UK, in an informative, interesting, and peaceful manner. I'll never get to that part of the world ( though my family comes from both the highlands in Scotland and the other side from the south of England) so I love your travels both near your home and your vacations. I am a reader, knitter, crocheter, and more. So it is all interesting to me. I was able to order both Tuesday Evenings with the Copeland Craft Resistance and The Cat That Saved Books from the library. And I agree, listening to a book adds a demension to the story. I also sometimes read along. I find I retain more by listening and reading along. I personally think Mia thinks she has two homes, with you and her owners, each providing for all of her needs. She is a smart and sweet kitty. Thank you, Ali for the many enjoyable hours sharing your life and family with all of us. I'll close with I also enjoy books in translation from Japan. Check out Cranes at Dusk by Hisako Matsubara. Hi to Dan, Lillia, and Phoebe.

Hi from Falmouth Massachusetts! Absolutely love your vlogs. Reminds me of home as I grew up in Faversham, Kent. It was lovely watching this one as I remember visiting Bath when I was a teenager as my Uncle lives in Coombedown, up the hill from Bath. It is such a beautiful city. I love to knit, though I’m not a fancy one and one of these days I’ll learn to crochet! I love to checkout local bookstores and knitting stores whenever I travel too. I don’t know if you have read Pachinko but it is a wonderful story of a Korean girl that ends up in Japan. It’s one of my all time favorites. My son also has been working in Korea and Japan since 2008 and has been in Shanghai for the past year. We are going to visit next month. Can’t wait, he has twin 3 year olds! We have been lucky to visit both Japan and korea and the people, food and cultures are lovely! Anyway sorry to ramble on! Keep up the vlogs they are one of my favorites and good luck with the university tours! Jane

I don’t crochet..my mother was a big crocheter and wanted to teach me how, but I didn’t want to. I regret that now. She did teach me how to sew, and knit, at age 10, and been doing it ever since!, I now have grandchildren I’m sewing & knitting for!! Keep your videos coming!, You might get me to become a crocheter too!!

As always, thank you for sharing the little joys of daily life and the simple, if only online, connection. I enjoy seeing and hearing about your activities and the areas you visit. It inspires me to look for my own local activities and local places to explore and to find the beauty in what is around us, where ever we are. And, it also helps to hear, sometimes, that life can be hectic and that is ok. So, I appreciate the, what you termed, 'nonsense' because that's life, really. I think. Wishing you and your family well! And oh, yes, I really need to find some time for reading - actual reading or audio books.

“The cat who saved books” reminds me of a bookshop in Seattle in the neighborhood called Fremont. There is a bookshop, called Ophelia’s. It is tiny, very small, but packed with books, and also was the home of a tiny cat named Ophelia, who looked very similar to your Mia (not your cat), But with a flatter slightly flatter face. I am convinced that the bookshop has stayed in business for well over 30 years now because of the magic that was Ophelia. My heart warms every time I enter with the memory of her.

I had a lovely solo day browsing book shops in beautiful Bath about 40 years ago and was so delighted to revisit it with you today. It's so British here (west coast Canada) really, I think you'd find that amusing, but also we have a lot of American cultural references in our day-to-day, of course, mixed in with Canadian ones (Indigenous and settler ones) that it's a wonderful rich mix like you referenced. Makes life that much more interesting! And reading is such a fabulous way to visit the world. Thank you for all the book chats!

Before the Coffee gets Cold. That is a book I read a couple of years ago now that I still think about from time to time. That is the mark of a great story if you ask me! Thanks for sharing!

Me too! I listened to it on audio and can still hear the greeting of "hello, welcome!" in my head sometimes ☺️ And I often think of the story. There are more in the series I believe so I need to listen to those too :)

Your vlogs are always lovely! I get to experience a completely different country, culture, lifestyle, etc. The Cat Who Saved Books sounds interesting. You find and share such a diversity of reads that I otherwise would never have heard of, which I love. I am also going to check out Legends and Lattes after I finish my current book.

Honestly just brilliant - listening to them read is such a different experience! I was actually laughing out loud listening to Richard Armitage (who I am now in love with 😂) reading David Copperfield, it was a delight from start to finish :)

You seem to feel about Denmark the way I feel about England! If I could convince my children and grandchildren to move to England, I would be there in the time it takes to pack up. The fact that you could just go spend the day in Bath is incredible. We've visited Bath twice but missed the bookshops, guess we'll have to go back I think people either love or hate Jane Eyre, or haven't even read it! I'm definitely in the love group and read it every few years just to renew those feelings. Thanks for the bookshops tour!

Definitely enjoyed this episode, Ali. The trip to Bath sure took me back to all those years ago when I went there for a Uni interview. But I didn't end up in Bath though for my tertiary studies.I hope Lillia had a successful audition. I do have a few copies of Japanese translated books which I can't remember off-hand what all of them are called except for Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa. Maybe you could give that a try. I love all your book choices. Happy reading and a happy new week ❤
