That was us! That was us! It was my daughter Ava and I who tried multiple points around Bland, VA, to bring you trail magic. :-) We LOVE watching your videos but we're just dipping our toes into longer hikes and the hope of backpacking soon. Ava's 12 and I'm...well, your age, so I'll keep that to myself. But we decided to have a mom/daughter adventure one day and see if we could leave trail magic, or even happen upon you. Best I can tell, it was right around the days you stayed two nights at the hostel and went SOBO for a day. I think that's part of the reason our timing was off a little. We did shuttle a few hikers in to Bland to get some food, and we gave the trail magic to other hikers we came across (the ones who said they would talk to Cool Breeze). So it was still a really cool girls' adventure and we had a great time. Everyone was super nice, even though we felt a little sheepish asking if they'd run into you. We love your videos. Thank you for sharing your adventures with everyone! Praying for you as you adventure on.

Mama and Little Bear! We are having so much fun watching you! Hubby (Truck Stop) successfully hiked the AT NOBO 2021. We watch a few vlogs every year. You guys are the only ones we were watching who are still on trail. You are doing amazing! Little Bear reminds me of our daughter at that age. So sweet. 💕. Anyway, when you get to Maine we would LOVE to trail magic you. There are several pick up locations that we can shuttle you, feed you, house you…whatever you need. Praying for you both and your fam too…oh…hubby is retired LEO as well!

The stacked rocks and the shak are related to the history of the area you are in. Much of the land in VA was made up of remote subsistence farms and inhabited by tenant farmers and squatters who had been there for generations. In the 1930's the government forced them out if their homes and off their land in order to create the Shenandoah national park and the national forest lands that we now find in the area. The rock piles are made up of stones removed from the ground so it could be farmed. The animosity of the locals could be felt by visitors for decades after the removal. As a side note, many of the families removed were of Scottish Heritage and descended from people who had been removed from their ancestral lands in scotland.

Agree with the comments about the rock piles being from former farmers trying to clear land for farming. The old building being a barn. They want airflow in the barn to keep the hay from molding. Thanks for the close view of the Audie Murphy memorial and the tree shots. Great job on the trail today. The Virginia Triple crown coming up. Love those spots so much. I hope your weather is good and spaces aren't too crowded as you visit. Stay safe & happy hiking!😊

The AT provides everyone who walks it with a with a close-up view of early American History in the eastern USA. Most of the present generations today need it badly. I, (we), lived it in the late 1940's, and 1950's in west Tennessee. We lived exactly like what you are seeing there in the old home places. We had No water except the springs and rainwater. No electricity. Used coal oil, (kerosene) lamps and lanterns. Drank fresh milk and churned butter from our cow. Cooked on a wood stove. Farmed with mules. Worked our crops with hand tools. We bathed on Saturday in a number 2 wash tub with water heated in the backyard by the sun. We grew or killed what we ate. We made our toys. And....., we didn't know we were poor. Truthfully, Kanati, AT 2008. (and 2025, hopefully).

Oh I am so glad you are okay from your fall. This past Monday I decided to start walking on trails near me and chose a trail that was about a 5.5 mile loop around a river. It was a moderate but technical trail. Roots coming out of the ground that honestly were ginormous and rocks were equally big. Many areas were so muddy and had streams so the trail had planks as walk thrus. Long story short in front of my there was a older gentleman with his big dog and in my mind I thought I’d let them walk the plank walk way first and I will enjoy the hills and scenery where I was at. Next I knew I walked right into a large root. Plunged arms out like a five and face planted. “Luckily” my double Ds helped my landing THAT day. But I also landed on my left hand and immediately swelled like a balloon. The guy came back and tried to help but I was so dizzy and my speech slowed like to almost a stop. It was hard to speak. Local 911 had to call the rescue team with the firefighters because they couldn’t get me out. And at that point I had lost sense of my limbs. Long story short. It’s Wednesday and I have nothing but quite a few blood vessels broken. Bruised bones everywhere and most of all I am thankful to God that I did not hit a rock on my landing. I’ll take swollen hands and bruised shoulders and ribs any day and not what the worse case could have been. I am thankful to the gentlemen and the couple that stayed with me through out the entire thing until my husband arrived even after I was gone on the ambulance. Just so they can tell him in person the details. Their voices were so soothing and made me feel safe. I knew I was okay because they were with me. We had a similar scare my friend but I am sooooo thankful that we both are okay! Shooken up but we are safe and well and healing! I’m kind of afraid to go back on the trails since I’m mostly alone. I haven’t admitted that out loud 😢 but I want to …. I just don’t know if I’m brave enough to go back on trails.

So so glad you weren’t severely hurt when you fell🙏🙏 I feel so bad that you had to go through that. I know first hand how hard that is! I was in Chicago for a Critical Care Nursing education program. I decided to walk around the city. I was walking at a good pace and looking at the architecture of a black iron fence in front of a vacant lot, I didn’t see the 2 1/2 inch iron pipe sticking up out of the concrete! My right foot hit that pipe and I went airborne like Superman!! Came down on my hands and knees. My right knee was hurting so badly! I could hardly put any weight on my right leg. I hobbled back to the hotel and started icing it. I can’t imagine being out there in the woods and falling! My heart goes out to you! You both are in my prayers that you stay safe and healthy for this wonderful adventure! Those views are beautiful 🥰🙏💗🥾🏕️🌲🌳

Really appreciate your honesty about yesterday's true character builder ❤️ It's so much scarier when something that doesn't feel threatening or unfamiliar causes harm. Physically and emotionally. It's like when an enemy betrays you it's expected, but when a friend does it's devastating. Hope you feel better soon 💗

Your tumble reminds me of the statistic that shows most car accidents occur near your home. In dicey situations you are vigilante because you need to be and then you get "comfortable" because the trail is "fine" and then you fall or trip. And at the end of a day of hiking your body is getting fatigued and we often don't pick our feet up as far or we just don't see that little protrusion that trips us. And maybe the focus shifts to getting to camp etc because your day is nearly over. It all adds up to being ripe for a fall or other accident. Glad you shared it and LB knows what to do. Glad you are feeling better as well.

Like a river, keep flowing forward on your pilgramage! You're both so inspirational! Love, light and blessings

The stacks of rocks could be from farmers clearing the land for farming or the area could have been a community at one time (before the land was acquired by the state/federal gov for the forest) and those are the collapsed chimneys of their homes, or both.

Sometimes, you need to process stuff first. MB, I may have to increase my prayers for you. Lol. Seriously, am glad God was watching over you and that you weren't hurt badly. Views today were great, and the forest was beautiful. Thanks for showing the Audie Murphy Memorial. That's something I never get tired of seeing. I hate walking at an angle like the Ledges. Throws you completely off balance. Ya'll handled it like champs. Ya'll are really doing well. LB is a warrior woman. I'm impressed with her stamina and ability to handle this trail at her age. MB, I am sorry to hear about your fall, but I enjoyed your story about it, if that's the right word. I'm sure it was most scary right afterward when you were contemplating the potential that you were seriously injured and miles from civilization. I know the feeling, especially when there are other souls under your care. But you worked through the situation with your typical presence of mind. I don't want to give you a swelled head :) but I hope you realize what a rare gift that calmness under pressure is. Of course you also have the luxury of solid backup in the form of LB, whom I have no doubt could take charge and rescue both of you if the need arose.

The tree you guys stood in front of reminds me of trees like in the movie wizard of Oz. The old cabin would definitely make your imagination run wild. MB thak you for reading about veteran Audie Murphy. I am a veteran and I appreciate it very much! MB sorry about your fall. Glad you're ok and be careful. LB I think you said you were 4'11' wow you're taller than me. I am 4'10' lol. You bears and Ellie rock!

So goad you weren't more seriously hurt MB. Hiking on those ledges looked treacherous and hard on the feet and ankles. That little bird was a Towhee. We see several in our yard every year here in the Atlanta area. Congratulations on 700!! One third of the way to Mt K! Interesting memorial about Audie Leon Murphy. I'm going to watch the movie, "To Hell and Back." Nice trail magic. Hope you are feeling better MB. Please be careful..stay safe and hike on!

I fell on a day hike in the Smokies about a year ago and like you just some bumps and scrapes but nothing serious, I felt very blessed that it wasn't serious, I also fell on blood mountain from tripping in the dark and jammed my hand up pretty bad, that took awhile to heal but again blessed it wasn't worse.

It never failed, but when I fell on my thru I was on flat ground and twice I was in town on a resupply. That pack weight is a whole new factor that pushes you to the ground and then flattens you. I’m so glad you didn’t get a worse injury. I met a south bouncer and he had fallen the day before and had staples cross his forehead. It looked awful. He was slackpacking the day I saw him. He said he fell and hit his head in a rock. He wasn’t supposed to be back on the trail per the Dr and the hostel stopped him from carrying a full pack. He had gotten the need for miles so ingrained in his mind that even with this severe injury he was still hiking so he would loose his tramily. I tried to tell him to get off for at least 4 days but he wasn’t having it and went running down the trail. I was so scared for him. Be safe out there and great vidoes.

the piles of rocks… we have these in NH wherever land was one cleared for farmland. First billion rocks removed from the field would become rock walls around the property but eventually there were just piles or excess rocks around… and yes, in NH you’ll find them deep in what’s now forest which was (unimaginably) previous farm land

My dad grew up in NH in the 1940s and he told me folks back then used to say the rocks were the main farm product of New England. You don't even have to plant them, and a new crop comes up every year!
