As usual i was teary eyed watching this then and now location from the movie Dawn of the by George A. Romero. Here in the Philippines the film was shown in 1979. I had sleepless nights upon watching it. I was 19 years old wayback. Now i'm turning 63. Thanks for this video. It made me younger again.❤❤❤

I am completely blown away right now. This is the most awesome filming location video I have ever seen. As a lifelong fan of Dawn of the Dead (1978) and George Romero’s dead films, this was such an exciting and entertaining experience. The level of details and effort that you put into finding the exact shot locations is astonishing and it makes the experience even more thrilling. And seeing the Living Dead Museum was truly incredible as well. I’m from Hawaii and most likely will never get to visit the Monroeville Mall in PA so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this video for the fans. And I know you’re a true fan too so it’s like getting to see these locations with a buddy. Thanks again Tampa Jay!

Thank you buddy I truly appreciate it. I spent most of the weekend inside of that mall. It is such a classic film! I love your handle there, Packanack. That’s definitely a Friday the 13th part two reference. I was just standing on that same property where the lodge used to sit, as I was tracking down those filming locations.

I am a great fan of DOTD or other Romero movies. In the year 1981, I was 15 and saw it at the first time. However, in German the move called ZOMBIE and the italien movie „Zombi“ is the name in German - Woodoo , Schreckensinsel der Zombies. I have a lot of different version of DODT. But I believe you have also different versions. Greeting from Austria (Österreich)

I grew up in murrysville, i was 6 when that mall opened and have tons of memories of hangin out there. Two girls from my neighborhood where used as extras in the movie, all you had to do was show up in your own make-up and costume. If you looked dead they chose you for a couple of shots, mostly the exterior scenes. Really cool seeing it in the screen shots. I still have pictures taken in that photo booth in 1980, and can remember how weird it was using those bathrooms after we all saw the movie....creepy hallway. Great video and since i live near tampa now let me say ... Go Rays...and Lightning

I remember going there in the 00's. Ended up picking up a mall directory and brought it to a convention to get signatures. I remember the staffer at Ken Foree's table got really excited and said "sign the JC Penny's!" :D Sadly the older zombie museum had closed/moved and there wasn't really anything zombie themed there at the time. I think I'm going to try to make a trip back this summer.

Wow! This is by far the most comprehensive video out there on the topic of Monroeville Mall filming locations in DOTD. As a side note… little piece of history… when I worked for JCPenney in the early 2000s, we would have our regional meetings here at the original location in the center of the mall. I remember wanting to slide down the center of the escalators like Roger did. But they had installed these little nubs all along the descent to keep people like me from doing just that. Also, I remember talking to an old mall guard who had worked there back in the 70s during the filming of DOTD. I asked him about the skating rink (which is now the food court), and he told me that the original machinery that used to keep the ice from melting is still under the floor of the food court. When the machinery broke back in the 80s, and it became too expensive to repair, the mall opted to put a food court in over top of it without removing the original mechanics.

Almost earie seeing how grown-over the old locations are with trees etc, the fences now thrown up around the old airport and the loss of the boat-station building structures. Good to see the Mall and Boiler power-station still going strong though. Great little piece of motion picture heritage. I can actually recall someone posting on a George E. Romero zombie fictional story site about that airport you visited back in the late 1990s and I think even then the pumps were gone but the fence wasn't yet installed, as he'd gone gone inside the property to take exterior pictures of the office building.

My best friend and I are huge fans of Dawn of the Dead and back in 2005 we made a trip to Monroeville Mall, JCP was still there and we road down the famous escalator that Roger slid down and we took several rides up and down the elevator, I had no idea and can't believe that JCP is gone and they gutted the store out to make a hallway and a cinema, this really makes me sad, glad I have photos and the memories.

Tampa Jay - Thanks a bunch for this video! I was in Pittsburgh this weekend and ventured over to Monroeville to check out the mall. Your video really helped me nail down some points of interest that would have been tough to find on my own. I visited the Living Dead Museum; for $8, not bad at all. The guy working there (no more than 30 yrs old) knew a ton about the movie; in particular, he pointed out the location of the bank in the movie...now a tax prep service of some sort. However, along with so many other indoor shopping centers across America, Monroeville Mall has seen its best days and I doubt it will be open five years from now. Several stores are closed/vacant and it looked like more people went there for their daily walking exercise than for shopping.

  • @torydz

I'm a native of Monroeville and you're correct; the mall is going downhill. It's still well maintained, but the vacancies are up, and the number of shoppers is down. Back in the 70's and 80's, you had to park on the outskirts of the lot to get a space. Today, you can practically park in the first few rows of spaces most of the way around the mall.

Dawn Of The Dead is the gift that keeps on giving even after forty eight years because i only ever watched the original until i got the four disk black box set and once i got that i only ever watched the extended version until recently when one night i clicked on the Argento cut on Prime. It felt like i was watching a completely new movie especially because of how the soundtrack is used. One day I’m hoping i can get into the United States (been a bad boy in my past) and if i do I’m literally heading to Monroeville first then on to Lolita in California for the Halloween 3 locations and up through to Canada to Hope for everything First Blood

Another GREAT one Jay! Love these! Could you do one of the remake of "Night of the Living Dead" from the late 80's or early 90's. It was filmed in and around Washington, Pa about 20 minutes away from Monroeville. Great stuff Jay...keep it up.

Awesome video Jay! This is my favorite zombie movie of all time. I knew I could outrun these zombies not the super sprinting zombies I of later movies....lol
