I actually make my videos a week in advance, so, from my perspective, I uploaded the Mind Flayer video (scheduled for the next week), and then Runesmith came out with his pretty much the day after.

The Gith making a pact with Tiamat and getting an army of red dragons probably didn't hurt their odds.

The Monster Manual and the Tome of Foes say Gith herself made a pact with Tiamat. It was Vlaakith's idea. Also, the Tome of Foes says that when Gith went to Hell to make the pact, she didn't return. Instead, Tiamat's favorite consort did and told all the Gith that Vlaakith was in charge now. Nothing shady there.

Here’s a fun fact: A high enough level Great Old One warlock can pretty convincingly fake being or summoning a mindflayer. Aside from the free access to Disguise/Alter Self and Silent Image with the right invocations, they have telepathy from their Awakened Mind ability, it makes sense for one of their languages to be Deep Speech, and they can simulate the effects of a mind blast with Synaptic Static. This might not work on actual mindflayers but you can certainly scare the pants off anyone else.

Another fun fact: Mind flayers are basically time travellers. That is the reason why aboleths know basically nothing about them

This is hands down my favorite monster in DnD. Mind flayers are awesome. I like the idea that one mind flayer would break off from the hive and secretly be the archwizard that keeps all the threats at bay in a city.

Same! Davvy's always got the most understandable info these races. Probably because he doesn't take 30 minutes to describe every little thing.

If you want to play as a mind flayer, you could choose any race and choose the mystic class. Your backstory would be that you have a tadpole in your brain, and you are slowly turning into an illithid. You would gain the psyonic powers as you slowly shifted. Make sure your dm is on board with this. At level 5 you would transition fully into an illithid. This would give you a new alignment, personality, and diet. Ask your dm for telepathy and maybe a modified brain removal ability. Any ideas in the comments would be appreciated.

If your unfortunate and your DM hates home brew material make a GOO warlock get the Repelling Blast Invocation and the Mage Hand cantrip. Pick either Pact of the Tome or Chain.

An idea I had was that you are a mind flayer created with a defect which means you are weaker than other mind flayer sand cannot eat brains You get a +2 to int and a +1 to cha you also get to choose one of the following abilities recharged over a short rest Innate psionics allows you to use int mod to cast certain spells Mind blast cone dragonborn int based breath weapon 2d8 dmg and stuns the enemy for a turn Extract brain touch range con save or either die if below 100 hp or take 10d10 you regain hp if you kill it with this move

In Volo’s Guide they actually say the Gith might have done something to literally erase the Mind Flayer empire from existence (hence why there aren’t massive Illithid ruins everywhere), and the ones that survived just happened to be in the Astral Plane at the time, so they’re fine. Another one I’ve heard is that the Mind Flayer empire is actually from the distant future, and it’s a Terminator sort of scenario where they all went to the past to stop or help it happen.

Also they could make farms of something that won't try and kill them, believe it or not rats brains could sustain them if you get enough of them. Ya we have made fake human brains out of rat brains, I have no idea why someone thought it was a good idea with any practical application.

@@beastwarsFTW I thought that mindflayers specifically needed to feed on genuinely intelligent brains, and that beasts, zombies, or anything otherwise non-sapient simply wouldn't do. So any race that wouldn't try and kill them also wouldn't be suitable food.

I really am loving this current trend you've been taking of painting the villains of Dungeons and Dragons in large sweeping brush strokes, it's so great!

I haven't played a whole lot of campaigns and I haven't gotten to see these incredible bits of collective storytelling and world building. I remember in 3.5, there was a book that mentioned a race you could play as that was half-illithid. I've always wondered what it would be like to play one... I mean, I've played weird characters before. Hell, I played an intelligent Gorilla paladin once, so giving an eldritch horror like some human-cthulhu hybrid a shot wouldn't be too out there.

Would’ve been cool if you talked about how the mindflayers have technically not been born yet and completely dominated the cosmos in the future until an unknown cataclysmic event forced its survivors to travel back in time before their race was even born to escape it. Also the come from the far realm but then settled in the astral plane. Otherwise fantastic video tho.

@@TerrariaGolem They did move into the Astral Plane, but quite quickly afterwards they moved to the Underdark. They don't have a very specific connection to the Astral plane.

Maybe... Eberron's a bit of an exception since its lore says it's separated off from other worlds, but the Mind Flayers got to Eberron through Xoriat, a plane that might very well be connected to the Far Realm.

I actually have an idea for a villain mind flayer sorcerer. Thank David Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean. He broke off from the other mind flayers disconnecting himself from the hive mind and uses his abilities both sorcery and psyonic to form a crew. His plan is kidnapping as many artificers and use them to try and construct a Nautilis. My plan is the PCs will know of him. As a dangerous pirate I know where he’s a mind flayer. If the heroes ignore him for too long he will succeed. And worse when they finally confront him he may very well reestablish his link with the hive mind giving them the plans to make their own Nautilis. Which is what he always intended from the beginning.

This would work so well as plague inc evolved vampire type.

Now I want to see ravnica vs mindflayer invasion. Or phyrexia vs forgotten realms or something. We have the technology! we have a crossover book!

guide to starting equipment?

I like to imagine a cosmopolitan society, possibly even a human city, based in the value of tolerance to difference. Where you do have a Illithid neighborhood, with the mind flayer citizens following laws as well as any other people. That would have to be a slaver society of course, since your illithid residents would buy their food openly in Center Market, like anyone else. Up there we would have public debates in newspapers about if a given cleric of some Neutral Good deity can refuse mind flayers in her temple or not. Possibly the elder brain going in justice to contest the right of one of his children to abandon the community and found his on, or became a lich. At same time, to enjoy the protection and rights provided by such a large an multicultural society the Illithids would have to keep other citizens out their died and respect the limits imposed by city law. They would live and prosper, but also pay taxes and serve the military. On the other hand, people trying to take their legally owned slaves and food source would be the criminals and the illithids would be the ones calling city guard in those cases. They could even have a program of promotion of their way of life. With books and artists sealing the idea of became a illithid to possible voluntaries.
