I am currently in a campaign were my character is a mind flayer and it's funny as heck. He communicates telepathicly ,which none of my party members seem to care about, and he reads books a lot and gets really annoyed at the stupidity of the party ,TBH my INT. score is 20, and I play him as this kind of mastermind as well. Though the best bit is although there is a large monster in our party I am the most suspicious since I wear lots of clothing thus it is impossible to tell my race so that's gonna be fun when it comes round to it. P.s He is an Ulitharid.

Amazing! My DM also lets us think about different races and I would really like to play as an ulitharid, what are his race characteristics?
First ever character I made for dnd was a mindflayer psionic bard.

Mindflayers are the best race in the D&D universe. You agree with me.

They are pretty classy
Imagine you're a party minding your buisiness, and you come across a motherf@cking Ulitharid psionist Goliath. You'd Basically be fighting a walking tank that shoots your brain, then eats it. If you think that'd be stupid, there's a freakin' BRAINEATER DRAGON! And that's not even counting the genius who homebrewed implanting an Elder Brain into the Terrasque.

I just homebrewed a part of the resistance against them discovered a way to bring the transfoemed person's mind from the changes of the toadpole but the physiological changes remain and memories so they were a huge help for the resistance

I've honestly created an illithid race already, a race that's not that powerful, you have an unarmed melee attack with tentacles, that uses Dexterity instead of strenght for attack and damage rolls, +2 to intelligence and a +1 to any skill of your choice (with Tasha i make it a +2 and +1 to any skill of your choice), a mind blast that's now similar to those of the new dragonborns, 30 ft. Cone, telepathy to 30ft., can cast levitate once per day or using spells lots, and a special trait that says they need to eat a brain at least once a week or else they'll begin losing health each day (literally any brain of any humanoid, kinda, race, I made it possible to count in also feys, fiends, and even aberrations with, humanoid shapes. you just need to kill a goblin and that's good for a week ) . No alhoons or ulitharids, alhoons are basically mind flyers that are sorcerers and wizards or any general spellcaster, ulitharids... I honestly don't care I love more alhoons and they're the ones mostly playable, as they're the exiled from their illithid society, and you can manage to find non evil ones, maybe an illithid that's sulken on his studies of dark magic
this is my favorite race in D&D and i've always wanted to make one... and now i really wanna buy baldur's gate 3 lol
I'm currently playing a Illithid and I love it! They are the best

Because people watching this video might be interested Homebrew Ilithid Race: Common Mind Flayer +2 Intelligence +1 Dexterity Speed of 30ft, but if NO creature is looking at you, add 15ft to your current Speed Natural armor of 12+Con mod. Sunlight sensitivity. Superior Darkvision. Languages: Common, Undercommon, & Abyssal (though any creature could understand you using telepathy). Cast Levitate & Detect Thoughts at will. No Armor Proficiency, Proficiency with scimitar, whip, sickle, & hand crossbow Psionics: After consuming the brain of a humanoid, you either have a natural armor against magic or Mind Blast. 1 brain equals one week of minor protection against almost all magic effects (ask your DM) or 1 Mind Blast (4d8+Int Mod). Tentacle attack is 2d10+Dex mod Ulitharid Has everything Common does as well. +1 Charisma Can learn ANY language after consuming a brain that could speak it. Advantage in any Cha skill check against an Underdark race. If current health is less than MAX, take the difference and add it to any Wisdom check a creature must make against an attack you make. Tentacle attack is 2d8+Dex but if the creature fails a Wisdom saving throw, could attack tentacle again as a bonus action with 3d4+Str Alhoon Everything Common has +1 Constitution Has Access to two Wizard Cantrips so long as one is Chill Touch. Can cast Chilling Grasp at will (3d6 cold damage). Can learn 1 Necromancy spell every two levels and functions in the same manner as Mind Blast, i.e. 1 brain = a level the spell could be cast (use Int as spellcasting focuss). Magic Weapon Proficiency, i.e. a +3 Eldar Longsword becomes 3+proficiency Alhoon Cutlass. Please note, SUPPOSED to be overpowered

Wait... Why would they speak abyssal or get faster when no one is looking?
@kingsadvisor18
2 жыл бұрын
@@user-vm9xz4kv9z Abyssal is a default language given to many aberrations and Underdark races. The Faster moving speed is a reference to the Pirates of the Caribbean movie, where Cpt. Jack Sparrow sees Davy Jones through the telescope and in the split second it takes him to put the device down, looking away from Jones, the villain clears the distance

To balance out the power of Mindflayer characters, create a rule so that the brains they eat impact their skills and abilities. If they eat 'dumb' brains it lowers their abilities, thus the mindflyers are driven to more and more dangerous challenges, to eat more and more higher skilled wizard brains, dragon brains, munch on Lich skulls, etc. They must continually feed on the very best brains they can find, and thus are shunned by civilizations like the Vampire characters' endless need to feed... Set a rule they must eat a minimum amount of INT points, per week, to stay alive, or risk starvation... To challenge the mindflayer character, fill the adventure with mindless threats, like gelatonus cubes, burrowing carrion worms, gibbering mouthers, slime molds, and automated trap devices...

Helpful tip from someone playing an illithid right now. 1. It's very funny to have your squid being a druid (druids typically hate aberrations) and 2. Goodberry. You wanna play a good bean. take druid for Goodberry: magically delivered sustenance once daily ensures you never have to eat another brain ever again! or if you don't want to play druid keep a chart for where you are in terms of food because you'll need to feed at least once a month, preferably every two weeks.
You have convinced me

An idea of my brother ... Plays Liara, from Mass Effect as an Illithid.
Omg YES
It would be interesting to play as a mindflyer where you are starving yourself which make you have disadvantage on intelligence throw. Play as a mindflyer that felt guilt devouring the innocent but something in your nature to do, instead you devour the villains or if for some reason have a party willing to let your mindflyer nibble their brain. Sure, devouring villains will be less likely in dnd you will be tempted to devour children and women, but he rolls on willpower to see if you can control yourself and devouring goblins and kobolds won't fill your hunger for brain and knowledge. You will an embarrassment to the mindflyer since you don't view the world as bunch of cattle and treating your party as equals. Playing as a guilty, heroic mindflyer would be an interesting to dm around.
