One thing i think is fun is with druids, race features still work when wildshaped, so as a dragonborn druid you can transform into a mouse or something similair and burn an unsuspecting target to a crisp. not to mention that a firebreathing bear is just cool

@@go03ert41 Unfortunately, no. Produce flame is spell and you can't cast spells in wild shape. (Unless its concentration and cast before but that pretty much invalidates the whole thing) It is a hard rule of wild shape.

@@benjaminwahl8059 it can be argued that spells gained as racial features arent actually spells, but innate abilities that produce spell-like effects. its just easier to describe by getting a spell, so thats what they did.

to be fair i think the resistance is underrated. especially if you have an idea of the campaign your going into. bonus points to cold which means you get to skip freezing temperature saving throws. i also still like the breath weapon as an attack instead of a action

Imo resistances are underrated but they're also not really fun, because your dm kinda has to acknowledge you have it and then use the attack on you anyways. Then you just say "oh I take half damage from that!" and feel cool for 2 seconds until you realize your dm knows most of the time. It basically says "you take half damage from a attack if your dm says so", which just feels like nonsense in terms of player agency. Instead I like the idea of being immune to particular spells or effects like the Helmed Horror, or getting advantage or immunities to particular conditions since their utility is more obvious.

I have an emerald totem of the bear dragonborn barbarian that I love to play. In battle, he resists everything and it makes playing the tank really fun. The gem flight also really helps to close the distance with mages who thought they could get away from melee range.

I actually used the Dragon Hide feat once, and I worked pretty well. We were going to this city to participate in a fighting tournament to win some gold and my dragonborn warlock signed up for the fistfight. Lo and behold, his opponent was a monk. Our damage die were the same but I overpowered him with my hefty Strength score. Dragonborn FTW!

My favorite race! I was thrilled to see the new stats in Fizban's, as they feel much better to play now. Personally I still really enjoy the classic Dragonborn paladin, but I've seen them do well with every class! One of the PCs in the game I run is currently a Gem Dragonborn artificer!

I've loved dragonborns since I started playing d&d 3 years ago. I didn't care that they were labeled the worst race and personally think they can play every class. Before Tasha's came along and changed up stat application the player just needed to be a little creative.

I like the new Dragobnorn from Fizban's, but I would make the following changes: 1. They can all choose between line and cone. 2. Chromatic's ability should be a reaction or bonus action and last a little longer, like 5 minutes. 3. Chromatic should get Thaumaturgy and Metallic should get Prestidigitation. The reason for the last one is that Gem get an extra ability in Telepathy and I felt like Chromatics should get something to show off their power and Metallics should get something to show off their magical nature. Oh, btw, Dragon Fear, as written, works with the new Breath Weapon. So I suggest you take it.

Breath should definitely be a bonus.

During my two year Curse of Strahd campaign, I played as a bronze dragonborn Tempest Cleric, specifically for the story and not the mechanics. I think I used my breath weapon twice, but it ended up being pretty useful since my Channel Divinity let me deal max damage.

Still no update for dragonblood sorcerer, even though it's the "prototypical archetype" for sorcerer. Still think they should have made arcane bloodline a subclass

Easily the best patron thanks message I’ve ever seen

I made a charecter who's whole thing is fireball self while in a group of enemies and that means I know I am taking fire damage so the action become immune is so worth it

I chose a black dragon born so I can use acid on locks to sneak in or escape somewhere

I think one of the best things to do is take the new red dragon born and combine that with dragon monk so you get double the breath weapon and for 6 of them assuming your at 20th level you can change the type and make it a cone or a line. Additionally you can give yourself resistance to any of the dragon type and can give yourself immunity to fire once per day

Nitpicky point: the thumbnail appears to be Langdedrosa Cyanwrath from Hoard of the Dragon Queen, who is a half dragon, not a dragonborn, as my players found out when they realized he had darkvision even though the party dragonborn did not.

Natural Armor is invaluable for Sorcerers, who have a much tighter spell selection.

So a bear totem barbarian emerald dragonborn has resistance to all damage and can shatter minds when they scream.

EGtW Dragonborn also have switched ability score boosts, which Tasha’s made irrelevant but they are there. Ravenite got a CON boost instead of the standard CHA, and Draconblood got an INT boost instead of STR. Both get Darkvision also, which none of the other Dragonborn do.

@@JaelinBezel Nope. Half-dragons are like half-elves, half-orcs, and half-ogres; one parent is the aforementioned creature. Additionally, Half-dragons can be Humanoids, Giants, Beasts, *and* Monstrosities, so you can have Blue Half-Dragon (Halfling), Red Half-Dragon Cyclops, Green Half-Dragon Elk, & White Half-Dragon Owlbear, for examples (Metallics can have Half-Dragon offspring too, but are generally more rare than Chroma Half-Dragons) Dragonborn are a race of mammilian humanoids whose origins are up to respective DMs, but the current iteration is borne from the 4th Edition lore: a race crafted by Dragon Gods to serve True Dragons, either as allies or slaves. Forgotten Realms has a somewhat convoluted background for why Dragonborn suddenly showed up in Faerûn (Spellplague shenanigans), but the planet they originate from (no, I'm not making this up) had Dragons as hated slavers and tormentors to the Dragonborn, so FR Dragonborn despise and fight Dragons, even though the Dragons in Faerûn have nothing to do with their past slavery. The greatest Dragon slayers in Faerûn are the Steelsky Liberators of Tymanthr, the Dragonborn capital in Forgotten Realms.

I made/(am making) a homebrew half-dragon race that has darkvision and a dragon color, then a smattering of options of how their dragon heritage expresses itself at level 1 and 5. Options include resistance and/or breath weapon based on color, natural armor, Blindsight, sorcerer spells (cantrip and level 1), limited use advantage on intimidation/persuasion, and 30 feet flight (only available at level 5). Very versatile but not strictly better than any of the variant dragonborn.

In my current campaign, half of it is fighting water monsters, since it’s set on a ship. My lightning breath weapon has come in handy so often! And, since I’m resistant, I can electrocute the water then dive in and get as much fish as my party needs!

Sometimes I wonder whether to unsubscribe from Davvy's patreon to subscribe next month to get the shout out with a new name "Follow Davvy on Twitter" cuz it's a really fun Twitter :)

Fun tactic with Metallic Dragonborn is the AoE prone trap. Go Oath of Conquest Paladin and take the Dragon Fear feat at level 4. Then, if you are surrounded by enemies, take the Attack action, replace your first attack with your breath weapon, and use Dragon Fear to replace that use of your breath weapon with the fear effect. Then replace your second attack with the Repulsion breath weapon to try to knock as many frightened enemies as possible prone. Any enemies that fail both saves are now stuck in the prone state so long as they remain frightened and in your aura.

One of my DMs allowed me to use my breath weapon as a sort of pseudo-smite spell on my greatsword as a Paladin.

Monks can only make a bonus action unarmed strike if they took the attack action and attacked with a monk weapon or unarmed strike, so prior to getting extra attack, if you use your breath weapon, making said bonus action unarmed strike is impossible. Notably, flurry of blows only requies you took the attack action, so you could use that.

I think I'd personally homebrew the new breath weapons to have the same shape as with the base dragonborn (so blue, brass and bronze are all lines, the others are cones). As for gem dragonborn, I'd just have to figure that out. But I do agree the way they did it in Fizban's is kinda weird to me

For the Tyranny of Dragons campaign I'm going to be a part of yes our DM confirmed we're doing both Horde of the Dragon Queen, and Wrath of Tiamat anyway my character is a Crystal Dragonborn Horizon Walker Ranger and yes I took advantage of getting Gift of the Gem Dragon as a free feat to boost my Wisdom.

ive always wanted to play dragonborn and it makes me so happy that fizbans actually makes them good! ive been disappointed by them for so long. (though i admittingly also do have a love-hate relationship with the fizbans dragonborn sense lore wise they're not supposed to be pureblood at all as they're all kinda hybridized and mixed around. which is why they're normally either brown or patchy like a koi)

I'm not too big a fan of the new dragonborn because they use the Heritage system from Tashas. I chose to combine fizban's with the classic dragonborn. Keeping the ASI of the old. And adding an optional class feature that gives the dragonborn a flying speed at the cost of a weaker breath weapon.

My dm normally replaces dragon born with a custom half dragon race that has base stats of og dragonborn but evolves racial traits per level.

I kind of just figured the fizban dragonborn were wotc's way of retconning the og dragonborn. og dragonborn no longer exists.

Fizban's dragonborn are definitely better, but I think people are way to hard on the original dragonborn. I think there was nothing wrong with the breath weapons using an action. Nothing at all. a 15ft cone/30ft line gives you non-melee range, the ability to hit multiple creatures, guaranteed damaged to each in the area of effect (even if halved), and upgrading damage to scale against cantrip options (cantrips which wouldn't be multi-target, or half-damage viable). It was a great option to keep available usable _every short rest,_ Spellcaster will eventually run out of spell slots, or might not have the right combat spells prepared. Melee players may not be able to get close enough to attack, or not without provoking opportunity attacks, and the above listed benefits of range/aoe/guaranteed damage still apply to them too! As nice as it is to be able to replace one attack of your action with the breath weapon, Fizban's version is now more limited because it has fewer uses per day. I also think it's over powered now, because you can replace one or more attacks you make with an action with the breath, so a fighter can use the breath weapon four or even six times on a turn! I feel like so many people who complain about certain game features (dragonborn, truestrike, dual wielding) don't understand the tactical benefits or design intentions of them. Combat-even in 5e-can require extremely tactically intelligent decisions and counter-decisions; The majority of complaints I see about 5e, and the changes/power creep WotC keeps implementing to appease the complaints, seem to always be about power output, and don't involve tactical feedback.

I want to play a red Dragonborn who is reflavored as a half dragon and I want a powerful breath weapon but for some reason I just hate d10s, so I don’t wanna use fizbands because of the damage dice, but the phb Dragonborn does fuck all damage, so should I got for preference of mechanical power?

Yeah, the new Dragonborn make them at least a bit better, I've always been a Kobold kinda guy, so the Dragonborn fly under my radar a lot. Though I'm hoping to reflavor an Emerlad Gem Dragon born, into an Ilithid. Gona go Aberrant mind Sorccerer and swap the Cha casting stat with Int. With that reskinning and mild retooling I think it makes a pretty good playable mind flayer. Gonna have him wear a plague doctor mask, and be the exsperment of an amoral wizard that vanished one day, have him be a bit of a philosopher, and find his own race a fit of a hard people to properly sustain. So I'll have that mix of wanting to live, but having a distant for his race.

What is your guide to a Nathan Western build tho?

In this vidoe and your dwarf video you make it sound like a Caster that wear armor lost a spell slot. I can not seem to find this rule. Where is it?

I still haven’t played a game of dnd yet, but I feel like the whole idea of optimizing your character doesn’t really suit the game well. If you pick a resistance that doesn’t show up that much, the dm should try to incorporate it more in the setting. Like maybe enemies don’t use lightning that often but there could be some electrode traps that you can get around with it. I guess it depends more on the people instead of the game.

Well, I'm going to be a wet blanket for a moment I guess and present my opinion here. I hate dragonborn, have hated them since they were first made a main race in 4e (and especially the way they needed to be shoehorned into various campaign worlds forcefully.) I don't hate other players for playing them, nor do I advise against it if that's what you wanna do (your char, your choice :) ) but I personally will never play them. That being said I DID like half-dragons in 3/3.5e but not because they were potentially super tough but rather for the flavor. Half-dragons had a potential special relationship that was just screaming plot hooks in it whereas the dragonborn... Don't really have that, at least not inherently (a good DM/player could compensate I suppose) There is also the minor aspect of the half parentage allowing for a character to look more like the non-dragon parent (while still obviously showing the dragon half) at the players' option. One of my favorite characters from 3.5e (who I technically never played) was a half silver dragon monk. She was 'shaped' human but had the silver scales, a tail, & claws along with silver hair. Her story would have been as much about learning who she was (and hopefully finding her father who she'd never met) as the adventuring itself. Most/all of what made her special to me would be lost if she was just... Another non-human race... Okay, rant and reminiscence over, love your work Davvy. :)

This is how I would have designed Dragonborn Dragonborn Ability Bonuses: +2 Strength +1 Charisma Size: Medium Speed: 30 Darkvision 60 Languages Common and Draconic Claw 1d4+Str Slashing Natural Armor- When not wearing armor you have an AC of 13+Dex* (Optional) Draconic Presence : Dragonborn are proficient with Persuasion and Intimidation skills. Draconic Heritage Energy Resistance: Nothing to ad here I feel it's good enough Breath Weapon: The original version of this Feature was very weak, being only ONCE PER REST, this needed some reworking. Damage- 2d6 Damage type varied depending on Scale Color, +1d6 at levels 6, 11, and 16 for total of 5d6 Range- 15ft Cone or 30ft line, what ever the Dragonborn wants when used Uses- Either Recharge 5-6 like other creatures with a Breath Weapon or a 1d4 Round Cool-down** Save- Metallic and Chromatic Dragonborn still have a Save DC=8+Con+Prof, Save depends on the Energy type. (Optional) Draconic Maturation Upon reaching level 7 a Dragonborn develops an additional physical characteristic of their draconic ancestry depending on the path they choose (either Sky, Land, or Sea). This process can be painful and to add additional roleplay value to them upon reaching level 7 their body is wracked with pain as the process starts, they must make a Constitution Save of 15 or pass out from the pain where they take a mandatory Long Rest (8 hours). If they pass the save they remain awake and they delay the development until the next time they take a Long Rest. These are more to add variety with the Dragonborn physically giving them more movement options. Sky: A pair of scaly dragon wings erupts from the Dragonborns back giving them a Fly speed of 30 feet (20 if wearing heavy armor), at level 14 Fly Speed increases to 50 (40 if wearing heavy armor). Land: The dragonborns forelimbs are strengthened and their Claw attacks increase to 1d6+Str Slashing damage, they also gain a Climb speed of 20 and the Powerful Build feature like Goliaths. At level 14 they gain a Burrow speed of 20 in soft earth such as soil or sand. Sea: The dragonborns hands and feet become webbed giving them a swim speed of 30 andyour tail also becomes more flexible to help with swimming but also gives you a Tail Slam attack with 1d8+Str Bludgeoning damage***. Then at level 14 they are able to hold their breath for 15 minutes at a time. Gem Dragonborn Thought I'd toss this out as well. In D&D 3.5 MM2 there are Gem Dragons who are the Neutral counterparts to Metallics Good and Chromatics Evil. Thought I'd introduce them as a new Dragonborn type. Breath Weapon - Gem Dragonborns Breath Weapon DC is Charisma based instead of Constitution based like the others, DC=8+Cha+Prof. Check MM2 of 3.5e, this is why I said Charisma instead of Constitution. Dragon - Energy Type Resist - Save - Breath Type Amethyst - Force - (Dex save) - Force Damage Crystal - Radiant - (Con save) - Radiant Damage Emerald - Thunder - (Con save) - Thunder Damage Sapphire - Lightning - (Dex save) - Lightning Damage Topaz - Cold - (Con save) - Cold Damage Obsidian - Fire - (Dex Save) - Fire Damage * I would have Natural Armor also help characters who wear armor cause their Dexterity is low by having it provide a +1 AC bonus while wearing armor like the Defense Fighting Style. I feel like this is how Natural Armor should work. When not wearing armor your scales/thick skin/ect acts as armor but when you are wearing armor it just gives a bonus due to being an extra layer to what you're wearing. Natural Armor also replaces the 10 in the Unarmored Defense Class Abilities, so a Dragonborn Barbarian or Monk would have an AC=13+Dex+Con/Wis. ** I prefer the 1d4 Round Cool-down for Breath Weapon cause it doesn't guarantee a 33.33-% chance you'll be able to use it again on your next turn. Instead you basically have to wait 12-30 seconds till you can use it again depending on what you roll on the d4. It also prevents spamming it so you'd have to use other tactics during the Cool-down period. *** This is something Lizardfolk should have as well.

I removed dragonborn from my game altogether. Not that I think the concept of playing a bipedal dragon isn't cool, but that it's all they have going on for them. They have no cultural background, and that makes them feel so... boring. It's easy to picture the dwarves under the mountain, their stony halls echoing with the thrum of a smith's hammer, the elves in their elegant cities, ethereal music of the twilight blowing through the air. Dragonborn are... Dragons. Cool.

Unpopular opinion, the old dragonborn isn't bad and I have no idea what people are talking about when they say it is.

@@ProfX501 They get a free resistance and essentially a free first level spell that scales to 5d6. That's more than humans get.

@@austinhaltiner1489 Are you high? Most human players play V Human, and a feat is worth more than all of those combined. A resistance varies in value depending on the element, and as the value of the resistance increases, the value of the breath weapon decreases. The 'free first level spell' STARTS at 2d6 if it's not resisted. Even for a first level spell it's garbage. Just compare the damage dice to Flaming Hands or Magic Missile. It 'scales' to 5d6 at level 16, and by that point that is literally nothing. It also doesn't count as an attack, so it doesn't synergise with Extra Attack or Flurry of Blows. It's literally never worth the action to use past the very early game

In my humble boomer opinion, Dragonborn should only be used in a world like Krynn, as a 'monster', maybe as an occasional NPC, but as a player race? no.

The sad thing that the dragon born in Fizban STILL BY FAR inferior to most races the breath weapon isnt as helpful for casters, does not work for non attack multiattack like druid wild shape or shapechange 1d10 is a joke an absolute joke start with a 2d6 then go 3d8, 4d10, 5d12 how ? and the bear minimum if you dont replace 1 attack and use your full action for at at 1 die the absolute bare minimum so casters don feel shit on. does that mean a level 1 can use breath for 3d6 ... yes ... its a bearing hand like that get to use 2 times a day .... so. Con VS Line .... here is a hot take CHOOSE IT WHEN YOU USE THE BREATH ... gasp !!!! how dare !!! The horror !!!! some times you need a line sometimes you need a con. Still no dark versions ... the descended of dragons who can see into multiple universes using dragon sight cant see in the dark ... still ... not to forget they dont get blind sight as they rightly should. the power depravity between the three options ! and how unsimilar in the structure they are. frustrating.

Here's all you need to know about dragonborn...they suck, and you should never play them. Here's the thing, in 3.5 "half-dragon" was an official race and it was a literal half dragon, not a watered-down version a dragon that had been deluded by hundreds of years until it was virtually unrecognizable from it's heritage. It had better stats, better abilities, and most importantly it had a rechargeable breath weapon. Now here's why you should never play a dragonborn in 5e. In the 5e MM there is a half dragon template that can be applied to a player character at level 1. So, don't play the shitty ass lizardfolk that wish they were dragons. Instead play an actual fucking dragon. I know what you're thinking, "but cleric my dm won't let me use templates from the mm" then pester the fuck out of him until he does or find a more open-minded dm but don't ever lower your standards to the point where playing as a dragonborn sounds like a good idea.

That is a terrible mind set. You should never antagonize the DM over a decision. If you don’t agree with them, discuss what you disagree with them, outside of a session, and try to come to an understanding. Don’t pester them about it. That won’t do anything but make the game less fun for everyone involved.

@@OwlShapedCeramic Or you could just not play a dragonborn. Most of the time i'd agree with you, but there's something fundamentally wrong the dragonborn and if that's the direction you want to go you should do everything in your power to fix that flaw.

Or maybe they should just play whatever race they want no matter how good or bad it is? Or atleast maybe talk to the dm if they want to tweak it a bit?

@@dmsviola1 no it can't. dragonborn are not worth playing as they sit. You'd have more fun playing a lizardfolk or a kobold.
