Depends on the version. Movie Hiccup is defo just a Drakewarden, but book Hiccup likely has some levels in Pact of the Chain warlock (Toothless being a psudodragon familiar). Actually, he might not even be a drakewarden at all, since Windwalker seems more similar to something from a find greater steed spell than the fire-breathing combat companion that the drakewarden provides.

@@troperhghar9898 Eh, from memory he’s not much a tinkerer as much as just being resourceful, at least in the books. I thought it over, and I came up with a build for him that’s at least viable. Race: Variant Human for the feat, pick up lucky (every hero needs some of it). For the skill, pick Persuasion. Background: Folk Hero. It has appropriate skill proficiencies and fits the theme of the character. Ability scores: Our first priority is Cha, with the second being Wis. For standard array: Str: 8 Dex: 12 Con: 13 (Increased to 14) Int: 10 (Whilst Hiccup is shown to be intelligent, it’s mostly on the subject of dragons, which is covered by the nature proficiency) Wis: 14 Cha: 15 (Increased to 16) Class 1: Ranger. Start with this to get some skill proficiencies, picking up Nature, Perception and Stealth. For favoured enemy, pick dragons, meaning that you now speak draconic and are experienced at tracking and recalling info about them. Also pick up the deft explorer optional class feature. Stick with 1 level for now. Class 2: Warlock (Hexblade). We mostly want this for pact of the chain, but it has some other benefits as well. Cha-based attacks makes the character less MAD, and allows us to use a longsword which is more appropriate to Hiccup. Many of the abilities are also easy to reflavour as martial prowess. Pick a psudodragon familiar for Toothless and the Investment of the Chain Master invocation. The other invocations and spells are up to the player. Only go 4 levels, since this is when we get an ability score increase. Increase your Cha to keep up with bonded accuracy. For the rest of the level range, stick to ranger. At 3rd level choose Drakewarden as your subclass and summon a big shaggy boi (Fun fact: It is stated in How to Seize a Dragon’s Jewel that Windwalker canonically smells of drinking chocolate). Notable points include picking humans at some point for your favoured enemy, and picking up the dueling fighting style. For ability scores, max out your Cha, and put one increase into Wis. Finally, pick up the mounted combatant and inspiring leader feats. (You might want to pick up the latter at the very end for flavour’s sake.) Also, if you’re wondering if the Wodensfang is included, he’s not as he’s really just a more likeable version of Levi from Legend of Zelda, and not really a combatant.

Upped the immunity for Chromatic to 10 minutes since it will still not come up very often, but the expanded time allows for environmental interaction. 3. Gave Chromatic and Metallic Dragonborn the Prestidigitation spell to mimic the fun rp ability Gems got with Telepathy. For the Drakewarden, all I did was give them spells: 1. Chromatic Orb 2. That ability doesn't become available until level 5, it can only be used once per day, it only lasts for 1 minute, and the speed it grants is only 30 feet (or is it equal to walking speed? Can't remember off the top of my head.) Point is, it's not that impressive. I've been DMing an all-Dragonborn game with 3 Gems, and they don't pop their wings unless the thing they're fighting also flies. It's really nothing to write home about.

Got Grim Hollow, use it together with Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, wrote a gothic horror setting, me and the bois are having a great time ever since. Transformation mechanics are dope as hell and super enrich the gameplay for certain classes, like the werewolf branch of the bloodhunter or the beastbarian from Tasha's. 10/10, would definitely mix Lovecraft, Shelley, and Stoker into a big bowl of WTF again! 💀❤

The only thing I didn't like about the ranger subclass is the inclusion of the pets reaction to boost a weapon damage. It essentially gives the player an additional bonus action without sacrificing any of their actions.

So I have opted to keep the shape of the breath weapon to match the color of the dragon (copper dragonborn does line, red dragonborn does cone, etc) and I also changed the crystal dragon Breath weapon a Line (cuz let's be real, a Breath weapon of radiant damage should be a Laser)

Tbh, that new breath weapon sounds kind of crazy, although perhaps I just need to be more creative as an aspiring DM. Later game it seems like it either becomes a game of trying to hold onto it until you can blitz a boss encounter (or at least it's first phase.), or a DM constantly throwing things at the party to counter the breath weapon like anti magic fields or enemies that resist the breath weapons damage type, both of which can feel unfun to a player who wants to use their abilities and not feel locked out from them. Maybe that can be mitigated a bit by having equally tense enemy encounters that might make them have to consider using a breath weapon slot or hodling it for a bigger enemy.
