Totally false technical explanation in the beginning. Ram is not on chip in Apple silicon nor is it on the new Qualcomm chip. Also the reason x86 is less efficient is not because “cpu, gpu and ram are separate” Also the vast majority of all windows laptops historically already had a gpu on chip and a media engine. (I have a degree in computer science)

Precisely. The reason x86 is less efficient has to do with the Instruction Set Architecture. x86 is based on the Complex Instruction Set (CISC) which need more cycles to execute one Instruction compared to a RISC based architecture like ARM and it's version that apple uses

That’s what I came here to say
@IvoPavlik

@@ayan8233 Even that is not completely true anymore, since both CISC and RISC worlds converged significantly towards each other in the mean time. For instance, current x86-64 chips use, in fact, simpler micro-code instructions to implement its complex instruction set instead of having each instruction implemented with a separate circuitry. OTOH, Arm (RISC) processors added more complex instructions to their set. There is an interview with the legendary chip designer Jim Keller at TechTechPotato channel, where he explained that the inefficiency of the current x86-64 chip implementations comes mainly from the historical burden of legacy features they have to implement. The modern Arm implementations are much younger and therefore having much simpler designs leading to higher efficiency.
I'm so glad our PC Resolve users are getting this, I switched to Mac when the M chips came out.

Cool news, the fact that Resolve will work on the Snapdragon architecture would make you think that if future flagship android phones and tablets are built using these new X chips then there is a good chance Davinci would have a compatible app for android devices....I use Davinci on PC for my professional wedding work, but for short form content and travel vlogs I'm using a combination of capcut and Lumafusion on tablet so it would be awesome if Davinci could run on it....who knows but cool info. Snapdragon X is a Microsoft/Qualcomm collaboration so it will be exclusive to Windows PCs. Google could make a similar push to have Android tablets that can run these workloads with their own CPU/NPU, but right now they seem to have given up on tablets. I don't know about Resolve on phones, maybe on a foldable it would make sense? You could always go with an iPad, not sure how it will perform compared to some of the cheaper Snapdragon X Windows tablets.

There is CISC (or namely x86) and RISC ( or namely ARM) CPUs. RISC doesn't necessarily mean the RAM must be in SoC design. There can be dedicated RAM just like x86. There would be no any difference except CPU architecture in future releases but for now RAM is integrated on SoC on RISC CPUs.
@TamasKiss-yk4st
29 күн бұрын
For a portable device, they must use the more efficient technology, because RAM is continously drain the battery (so in sleep mode, it's still need the power to keep everything in memory, just one sec without power it's wipe the memory..) and DDR RAM use a lot more power, it's matter if your device lose 2% or 10% of battery at night.. or even while you use, that 8% battery difference can extends the usage time significantly. In a desktop basically nobody cares if it's less efficient, or too much (because 2x more RAM also use 2x more power to operate), but from a tiny battery it's not to clever to waste the battery for things like this.

Decisions decisions, my current intel Mac Book Pro is just too slow. I am about year away from replacing. I was thinking of a gaming laptop or another mac book pro now another contender?
@MrAlexTech
Ай бұрын
Yeah I'd think so. Id definitely wait a little while longer, just to see how these new ones play out. MacBooks are great tbf. I've got a m3 pro. Gaming laptops are more powerful (for similar cost) but bigger, heavier, louder and need power.
It really isn’t about all on chip or not. I don’t have a degree in computer science but AMD has been making x86 SOCs for a minute. It comes down to instruction set, RISC vs CISC. x86 is CISC and ARM(apple/Qualcomm) is CISC. RISC is more power efficient because it uses less complex hardware. RISC cpus/SOCs are what we’ve been using in our cellphones for generations. Intel did make an x86 atom cpu for mobile devices but the performance was trash. I believe we settled on CISC processors in the beginning because they were easier for compatibility. But now since we all carry a RISC based computer in our pocket the challenges are minimal.
I love this new news information ❤🎉❤
I just can’t imagine why I would ever not run resolve on my powerful desktop with dual monitors, speakers, storage etc etc. never in my life would I think to run resolve on a tablet. What next - a phone. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Not to be negative but da va vinci isnt really changing at all. I was a bit dissapointed about that. Im not missing power with a Dell 17 xps and an external 3090 - even the internal 3060 does amazing
What will this mean for PC builders? Will we be able to soc as a module and put them on motherboards? Like you said, more choice is better. It drives competition and help keep prices low

Means that pc builders will start charging us more for ram and storage like Apple has…. Also means the days of open architecture may be numbered. A lot of changes coming regardless and not likely pc builders will be on their mind as much as the desire to make profits.
Will the new DR that runs natively on ARM still gonna work with my current machine that I have been using it on?
I remember way back when I was reading about the ARM 1 chip, that Acorn Computers designed. How it was faster than the Amiga m68000 and it's co-processors. Acorn nailed that Acorn RISC Machine (ARM) processor. Purpose built for the Acorn Archimedes series.
but does it really mean more choice or does it mean the resolve for windows version will only work on mobile phone cpus from now on?
Good luck getting demo units! Hope it happens.
this is exciting as i do like working on windows more than mac but my m1 macmini with 16gb ram runs davinci quite well and if you could get similar ability in such a small package it would be great.
Excellent news for all Resolve users. I see a head-to-head comparison with the iPad version coming soon to a KZread channel near you!
I like the idea of taking your editing rig on the road but having more power when you get home/office. I assume that is using external GPUs. How well do they work for capture and editing? Considering most enclosures cost $250-$300, you probably need to put in a decent graphics card to justify the combined price.
Why did you wait until I had held out as long as I could before splurging on the Studio version? My luck can only be described as Micro. It would have been a nice 85th birthday present. I very much appreciate yours and Casey's help in learning DaVinci Resolve. I hope to have a KZread channel up and running in the reasonably near term. It will be something to keep me off the streets . . . but then my wheelchair already does a fair job of that.

I'm not sure if you have the time to answer questions, but I am going to give it a shot. I am working on a memorial video for my mother, and I created a small problem for myself. I'll try and keep it brief. I am working on a large slide show. Like really large. I decided to break it up into smaller sections to make syncing to music easier. However, now each separate timeline section does not have an end where it should. It goes on for the full length of the original timeline. How do you set new end points?
@dhk1

Each timeline will stop on the end of the last clip. If it is still playing then check to see if you have any clips on any of the video or audio tracks that are past your chosen end. They could be very small clips that are left over from a fine edit that are left behind.

Yes. There is no noticeable difference, if any at all.
Does it have unified memory? Video engine encoders (x26x/Prores)?
Adreno GPU in X Elite: approx 4+ TFLOPS RTX 3050TI: approx 8 TFLOPS Intel Iris Xe: approx 3+ TFLOPS Radeon 680M: approx 3+ TFLOPS So, how does the Adreno process faster than the rest? If USB4 really works, then it would be an option to attach TB3 eGPU on it like I do for my ROG Flow Z13 and X16 with RTX A4000 and A5000. Resolve Studio runs pretty well with it. Curious on the X Elite. Might ask a vendor to send me one next month. Specially with 32GB of RAM.
It was nice seeing Resolve show up at the Microsoft Surface event yesterday. It says a lot about the software when it's Apple and Microsoft's choice for showing off video performance. They could've just shown off Premiere Pro (they did show Photoshop just before Resolve). We'll see how much better Resolve performs with dedicated NPUs taking care of some of those AI tasks but at least it's one of the apps being used for testing.
I have been using Resolve for about two years. As long as Blackmagic does not abandon x64 and Windows 10, that's all great. But because Win11 is absolutely a non-starter, they really need to continue porting their software to Linux. I may be moving to it soon.

I made the switch to Linux a little over two years ago. It truthfully has had a lot of bumps, but I'm still not going to switch back to Windows. Win10 was feeling bloated, and Win11 is awful. And Davinci Resolve runs like butter on Linux. Absolutely smooth. So, upon seeing this video, I immediately searched for Snapdradon X support on Linux. Qualcomm has a blog post from exactly one week ago today to share their support of the Linux platform. They have been upstreaming patches to the Linux kernel for several generations of their SoCs now. Here's a quote: "It’s been our priority not only to support Linux on our premium-tier SoCs, but to support it pronto. In fact, within one or two days of publicly announcing each generation of Snapdragon 8, we’ve posted the initial patchset for Linux kernel support. Snapdragon X Elite was no exception: we announced on October 23 of last year and posted the patchset the next day. That was the result of a lot of pre-announcement work to get everything up and running on Linux and Debian." (I'd link the article, but KZread would flag the comment and it'd never show. I just searched "snapdragon x linux" and it was the first result.) There are some system features that will need a kernel update to function properly (important ones like USB, sound, and the camera), so it will take a few months to cook, but it's good to see Qualcomm is actively working on Linux support.
Do you think it's time to update to win 11?
@MrAlexTech
Ай бұрын
Probably tbf. They did some weird (annoying) stuff with 11 but overall, it's been pretty stable.
I wouldn't mind a ARM or a RISC V desktop or laptop with a Blackmagic label optimized to run fusion or resolve and other creative multimedia intensive workflows with high bandwidth ports capable of creating render clusters.
That's quite nice about the notebooks. But I personally don't want to work on a notebook, but on a real PC with lots of hard disk space and 3 screens. I wonder what will come here? What I also wonder: ARM also seems to make sense for desktop (see Apple), I don't think Intel and AMD will just leave the field like that. Let's see what time brings in the next few years
I'll be replacing my one laptop within the next year so this could not have come at a better time for editing though I'll no doubt have to keep the Intel Win11 systems running for astronomy software.
"we get thin and light laptops" The first thing I look at when buying a laptop is: Can I swap out components and is it repairable/upgradable. If It's a closed box with almost no posibillity to do this it's a big no for me.
