David Sacks: Ukraine is turning into Woke War III

Freddie Sayers meets David Sacks.
Read the accompanying article: unherd.com/thepost/david-sack...
Listen to the podcast: shows.acast.com/lockdowntv-wi...
When Elon Musk unveiled his notorious Ukraine peace proposal on Twitter last month, it caused quite the stir. For simply outlining the potential contours of a negotiated settlement between Ukraine and Russia, the new Twitter CEO was derided as a dangerous Putin apologist (despite his company Starlink providing internet to Ukraine at a cost of $20 million a month). It happens that Musk is not the only Silicon Valley mogul who has come under fire for taking a realist line on the conflict.
In fact, a friend of Musk’s, David Sacks, wrote an article in which he alleged the West had entered into “Woke War III”. Over the course of the war, the woke Left and the neoconservative Right have been marching in lockstep, and using “woke cancellation tactics” to suppress any dissenting opinions.
Sacks, a multimillionaire venture capitalist and host of the hit podcast ‘All-In’ expands on his thinking in UnHerdTV’s latest interview, recorded 26th October 2022.

This was a perfect explanation. I've been following the descent into chaos in the Ukraine since 2014 and later watched Oliver Stone's 'The Putin Interviews' which further highlight all the key issues Russia was facing from the West. It's frustrating to see so many go along with mainstream media fed storylines without questioning and reading into history themselves. One could say that social media and its echo chamber tendencies are to blame. I digress. Thank you Freddie and the UnHerd team as always.

The problem with finding a sane solution to the conflict lies in the fact that there exist within the US administration, a host of egoistic, immature political players who think they are Cersei or Tyrion Lancaster reborn - idiots who grew up on computer games and Marvel fantasies and whose Daddys funded their Harvard and Yale college degrees. One thing to say about Freddie Sayers. From the beginning of the pandemic up until now, I had to do my own research concerning everything around pandemic measures and the vaccines, because no mainstream source seemed to do a good job (not even close) or was trustworthy. I can tell from my own experience that doing serious research, so that one can at least have a reasonable shot at a somewhat solid decision is no easy task; it is time consuming and exhausting, not to mention the stress. Doing this for at least 3-4 hours each day after work for over 2 years has empowered me, nevertheless it has also exhausted me. I think I came to know unherd in the middle of 2021 and have followed and critically observed it since then. I can now say with an ease of mind that I can pull my information from this "news outlet" [it is so muh more], because Freddie has proven for one, that his heart is in the right place (,which for me is the most important thing) and that his competence in doing this type of work is par excellence; he just has the right mentality to dissect the issue at hand with solid critical thinking and a cool head. It doesn't mean that there is no room for error or differing opinion, not at all, but that Freddie is fully trustworthy and does excellent work. I can say, with an ease of heart, that I can FINALLY take information coming from a news source, without an instantly puching need or even obsession to immediately cross-check and dissect it. Freddie has earned my trust on all fronts. It spares me so much time, energy and stress. THANK YOU, FREDDIE AND THE UNHERD TEAM! So, these days my time doing research has fallen to a few hours a week just to keep up to date. Unherd and some other "new" platforms have become my new sources for pre-digested information and I can finally chill a bit more.

This gave me the time to understand what was going on and critically process. Although at one point I was way too eager to get the jab. This was around the time of the delta variant where my younger friend found herself with a 50 50 chance of pulling through. I am old enough to remember when the Soviet Union was collapsing and left some nuclear weapons in Ukraine. The west agreed to ensure the territorial integrity of Ukrain in exchange for helping them to decommission those devices. So many nations agreed to this. I think that Russia was one such party. Shall we forget these assurances, shall we appease Putin. Under the Minsk agreement, the Donbass didn't want to actually leave Ukraine, but to have autonomy. In that part of the world, an autonomous region is just like a state in the USA. It looks after its own internal affairs but remains within the main country. However, Ukraine central decided to force the matter militarily. Going back to NATO / Kosovo, the procedure used by Russia is almost a dead copy. Note that the Kosovo event went to the International Court of Justice which opined that a group of people may leave the main country without the permission of the main country and may call for assistance in the matter.

But it makes me uneasy to see the amount of respect we give millionaires and billionaires simply because they have been successful in business - as if that makes them wiser or more intelligent than the rest of us. The more "puppety" our politicians become, the more democracy crumbles, the more the main political parties talk in unison, the more people look up to the super-rich, simply because they are super rich. I wish people would start to think for themselves and take a bit of responsibility over their lives, instead of looking for leadership among the very groups that have got us into this shocking mess. The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office says "The UK has committed £2.3bn of military support to Ukraine this year." This at a time when the Government is saying it will have no option but to raise taxes. Looking to the super-rich to get us out of this mess is like embracing feudalism.

Is it being silenced? Discussing potential diplomatic solutions... If one can think of one in this case? ... is different from openly supporting Putin and hoping for the demise and destruction of the European and US economies and democracies. I think an open debate on diplomatic solutions is healthy... if only to tease out what is and isn't feasible. But did the tech giants speak out against big pharma control of the covid vaccine narrative? Can one trust powerful corporations and multi billionaires any more than trust one or other of the political parties they finance? Where Europe is concerned, Putin's invasion of Ukraine has been a wake up call to massively rebuild it's military capabilities and independent energy security. Europe is caught right now between dependence on Russia that was for low cost energy and The USA now for high cost energy supply. Maybe the Russian people will by next year wake up to the need to overthrow their government and their soldiers will just go home... Or China will decide to take back Siberia.. Or some oligarchs will take over in a coup in Russia and open some realistic diplomatic channels because they want to get back to making money and war isn't proving the way to do it. I don't think diplomacy is in Putin's vocabulary.

As we, and this interview try to deal with facts, the philosopher Bertrand Russell when asked in 1959 what messages he would like to give to future generations mentioned one under an intellectual perspective - "consider only the facts, not what we wish to believe, or believe as socially beneficial, if it were believed". The very real problem as it has always been is in estabishing fact, and never more so in these times of media entangled politics, in effect offering a ‘garden’ of facts which are selectively picked for argument. In addition, Marshall McLuhan’s ‘The Media IS the Message’ (1964) has never been more to the fore, making established fact almost impossible to achieve, separate and verify apart from media influence. Secondly, insecurity was mentioned during the interview, which needs to be understood as something shared by both perpetrators and those effected. Presidents, who brook no opposition, by any means, are indubitably pathologically insecure - a real concern in a country like Russia having one of the largest nuclear arsenals in the world. We can look at the history and try to reason, but, in this instance, and as in so many other acts in the ‘Play of the World’, we are arguably dealing with an illness which takes the greatest of understanding and skill to manage/ negotiate and resolve.

Interesting interview! One of your bettter ones, Freddie! I really liked that you posed some difficult (but not too difficult) questions. I understand that there must be a strict time limitation and you have to do the best with what you can. I also appreciate what the guest said and especially what he didn't. I clicked on the video without noticing when it was released (1 month ago). I read in the description that it was recorded on the 26th of October. Why is this important? Because Mr. Sacks referred the Minsk Agreements and the fact that they were not uphold. Funny enough, a week ago or so, we had the Merkel interview which blatantly admitted that those accords were never gonna be honored and that they were just buying time to arm Ukraine... Why is this important? Because it proves to Russia that it cannot trust any deals brokered by the west and it will be up to them to fix the problem. We have sabotaged our credibility too much and it's coming around to byte us in the a$$. Back to the guest: Mr Sacks is careful with his words. We must understand that this is not just a man who just happened to start reading stuff and figure out that the MSM narrative is misleading. He knows much more than he's showing. He's choosing his words, cautiously walking the line. Obviously, I don't think he's honest about his motivation. With 20/20 hindsight, I truly believe he had a good picture about what was about to happen with twitter, and what Musk was about to do. My theory is that, slowly, but surely, these technocrats will move away from the current political system to replace it with their own. There are some part of his answer that might age very well... we'll see...

Not only that but it's clear that you are completely misrepresenting her words because they cancel each other out. You say on one hand that merkel said minsk would never be implemented. But then you also said they were only to buy time to arm Ukraine. Well which is it? Did the west never intend to implement minsk? Or did they plan to implement minsk in order to buy Ukraine the time it needed to. Prepare? You can have it both ways. Also your assertion that Russia cannot trust the west is laughable and ignorant. Russia has failed to honor a single agreement it has ever signed onto. Time and time again we see Russia or the Soviet Union break treaties arraignments, accords ect. Do you have any idea how many they broke just in the invasion of Ukraine alone? Meanwhile the west and the United States has honored every one off thier.

English man i know married 17 years to Ukrainian living there most of the time, recently evacuated back to UK told me how he had toured much of the eastern region of Poland and for some years massive weaponry and troop build up there was plain to see. Ostensibly hidden away in forrested regions, but everyone knew of it. I don't think such a 'provocation' can be ignored in the obvious most complex equation. And I have listened to many talks such as this including all the Meersheimer ones and see some validity in both mainstream 'sides' and excellent comments here too. The psychogeography maybe we ignore. No one talks of the Poland buildup. Sat in Kremlin, map showing the massive country of Russia and Poland so small in comparison flashing TO THEM like a very bright warning beacon and of course from their perspective a state next door Ukraine where potentially the same could happen ... The polish armaments aren't aimed at Botswana or Iceland for god's sake, only one conceivable raison d'etre ..I'm a pacifist and decry brutality on both sides .. but I ain't daft and not is Putin I do think NATO / USA / UK whomsoever have pushed it far enough so much hardware thought central europe Walk away..... back out... help out a quasi partitioned future post treaty Ukraine as arguably " we" prodded the hornets nest...it didn't come to us to get prodded... And we must learn to back off or at least move no nearer. After all we learned his military might not what assumed...we need not carry on towards the nest.... so stopping further bloodshed is all that matters. Maybe accept Putin needed to make his point factoring in what to him are several states in effect all the same...just bases for our machinery along an expanding band.. .. and we learned where his line was, so that's enough. I suspect rational history will see in not too distant future that's all that really happened..

People here are incredibly dense. A non-violent free referendum was held whether or not to join a new state. Every single part of Ukraine voted in majority to join. Pretending that a military conflict for 8 years with parts of that country held by hostile foreign powers isnt going to see the previous loyalist citizens die or leave disproportionately to Ukrainian held territory is mental. The vote is obviously not reflective of any reality other than the fact that Russia has victimized Ukrainian citizens in an area they violently took to the point where they are outnumbered. That is not a fair vote and no other Western nation would stand for it. But the contrarians here think theyre so wise for being contraian.

So because of these reasons we allow an autocrat in a decaying power to invade a smaller neighbor and conquer parts of its territory agains all international laws. What makes you think that other autocrats in other regions will not do the same? What makes you think that Putin will stop there? Maybe we should all read again what happened in Europe in 1939 - 1945. These rich guys think like feudal lords and see the world as territory to conquer, dangerous people. 5:01 This bloke picks and chooses what suits him. He forgot to mention the 1991 independence referendum, where all regions including Crimea voted for independence. He forgot to mention the Budapest agreement in 1994 under which Russia committed itself to respect Ukrainian borders, including Crimea, in exchange for its nuclear disarmament. He ignores the fact that in the last general election in Ukraine there was no significant difference between voting in the east and west of the country.. Apparently he was also not informed that in 2014 the militias were organised by FSB agents, like Girkin, and that the Russian army then directly intervened when Ukraine was going to restore order.

_Independence from the USSR_ is not the same as _hostile relations with the new Russian Federation._ And in that referendum, Crimea was a clear outlier, with a much smaller support for independence compared to the other oblasts. Also, things tends to change over the course of 25 years. Are you suggesting that Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk were in favor of the events that led to the change in government in 2014? Speaking of the more recent elections, not sure if you meant parliament or presidential, but in the case of Zelensky, why wouldn't the east of Ukraine vote for him? You know what his platform was, right? It seems typical for Ukrainians to put their full hope and trust in a political figure only for that confidence to erode in a matter of months. Before the Russian invasion, Zelensky's popularity had dropped by almost half. Who knows what it is currently, with all the censorship that exists in Ukraine.

The bigger issue that they ignore is that Russia simply has no credibility anymore in any non-violent negotiation. You cannot negotiate with a liar who repeatedly violates previous agreements. Furthermore, the idea of "self-determination" AFTER Russia has killed, imprisoned, or kidnaped the pro-Ukrainian sector of the population of the annexed regions is deeply flawed to the point of stupidity, never mind that this "solution" does not offer any reparations for damages and loss of life etc. to Ukraine. The only region that MIGHT be appropriate to negotiate over would be Crimea - and there, it seems like Russia should PAY some sort of agreed amount to Ukraine for a land purchase agreement, if they want to keep it. (Negotiations might need to include provision of water from the Dnieper river etc.) There are plenty of legal precedents for this, e.g. the Alaska purchase from Russia, or Louisiana purchase from France. PS: I don't see David Sacks as pro-Putin - just stupid. You don't appease a wife-beater by saying that you won't send the police around next time the wife screams.

I say nearly, because, Sacks says that this invasion was barbaric and brutal, however, skips talking about the attempt to systematically annihilate the Russian speaking populace of the Donbass region, by the neo-Nazi Ukrainian regime, which America actively supports. Notwithstanding this, Sacks is one of the few sane and courageous voices that Americans would do well to support. Does it not occur to them, the insanity of US involvement in a conflict that is so far away and of little consequence? OK, you want to talk about Mearsheimer and Sachs? Why don't we talk about Mearsheimer being at the University of Chicago which was the epicenter of the neoliberal agenda since the 70s. And Sachs was the greatest preacher of the neoliberal gospel to Russia during the fall of the soviet union. That gospel left all of Russia traumatized in the 90s on a level analogous with Germany in the 20s before they embraced Hitler. If you ask me, Mearsheimer and Sachs are trying to talk about NATO in order to cover up their own role in bringing about this catastrophe.
