UnHerd

UnHerd

As you may have guessed from our strange spelling, UnHerd aims to do two things: to push back against the herd mentality with new and bold thinking, and to provide a platform for otherwise unheard ideas, people and places.

We think this approach is more needed than ever. Societies across the West are divided and stuck, and the established media is struggling to make sense of what’s happening. The governing ideologies of the past generation are too often either unquestioningly defended or rejected wholesale.

It’s easy and safe to be in one or other of these two camps - defensive liberal or angry reactionary - but UnHerd is trying to do something different, and harder.

We want to be bold enough to identify those things that have been lost, as well as gained, by the liberal world order of the past thirty years; but we strive to be always thoughtful rather than divisive.

Welcome to UnHerd. We hope you find something that makes you think again.

good point made initially in this video that there are obvious escapes to the censorship complex like the Streisand effect. An other defense is education of the public, knowing the mechanisms which are used to funnel narratives or feed propaganda.

Fact-checking used to be a step in the copy-editing process of any material for publication in the print media. It was literally someone double-checking each item brought up as a fact by the author of the material before publication, and it was done by an in-house employed copy-editor. With the internet, individual users putting stuff online became their own fact-checkers if at all. And with the decline of print media copy-editors and fact-checkers the first to be let go. Editorial standards went down, spelling and grammar mistakes became more prevalent in print and online versions of newspapers. Enter the 'non-profit' fact-checking agencies as an outside clearing house of sorts who aren't abiding by the publication's editorial guidelines but by criteria they set and change for themselves. This is, I think, part of why we got the slippery slope into ideological creep and the situation Siegel is describing.

I haven't been able to get anyone to tell me what the objective discerning criteria are, by which some people get the diagnosis gender disphoria, while others (also claiming to be transgender) do not. This makes me doubtful if gender disphoria is a label for an actual condition.

The "censorship" issue will seem opaque until it is appreciated that western civilisation has transitioned from the value Right is might, to Might is right. The Post modernism widely disseminated in our academies denies the entire category of truth because "truth" is the prerogative of power, so progress no longer entails the accumulation of truth, but of power. (then the powerful are obliged to define what is true) - hence the proliferation simultaneously around the whole western world of governmental "misinformation" and "hate speech" legislating bodies. It has not been widely appreciated that the end of truth is the end of democracy, journalism, science, medicine, education, the arts, justice...everything - including civilisation itself.

It's understandable that advertisers may want to hire consultants to tell them where the Overton Window is, and how to avoid controversy. But if those consultants are giving them dishonest and politically biased advice, the advertisers should want to take their business elsewhere.

After WWII the Fed government very proudly built us a net work of highways, it was a trap, not the highways needed up keep so the fed now had a chain to keep the states in line, its called Federal Aid. The lopsided system who is added to the Social Security and welfare systems and continue to build ever there after more and more lopsided system who is added to he Social Security and welfare systems and continue to build ever there after more and more chains to keep the states in line because we don't do it with the government once we end up in a mess. chain to keep the states in line because we don't do it with the government once we end up in a mess. Now they are trying to feed us impossible lies and shut up the little kid who sees that the emperor is naked. Our government can't be trusted it has too much power, the way it works when the government has too much power and another group takes it down is it that other group takes over the power and people do not get free. It is a terrible trap.

I recently watched an interview with two former UK intelligence heads on _"The Rest is Politics"_ podcast. And it was very interesting to see the parallels with this same elite orthodoxy. They generally expressed the beliefs that the intelligence services are vital for protecting democracy against the two primary threats of Trump and Climate Change. And yes, the intelligence services used to be corrupt, violent, and patriarchal. But now they're very responsible, ethical, and a diverse meritocracy. It did leave me with the impression that a lot of the Overton Window may essentially be decided by US and UK intelligence services.

Georgia is making a law simply requiring all organizations with at least 20% of foreign funding to declare the source of their funding. US paid NGOs are trying to create as much revolt before it passes, but it seems like a very good idea. I think what we need in media is a public, easy to find disclosure of funding: who are the major advertisers, what they've paid, if it's the government then a clearly accesible database of government communication with the editors/owners that could influence the direction. Probably the biggest censorship is censorship of how money talks. Funding controls so much of the conversation. Even in science, the biggest predictor of outcomes is who funds the experiment. This has been a major foundation of Dr Ioannidis' Reproducibiltiy Crisis.

Is there an aspect to the disinformation complex that is finding smaller and smaller dragons to vanquish? Our intelligence agencies were built first to defeat the Axis powers in WWII and then to contain revolutionary international communism. The FBI has been, at least since J. Edgar Hoover, built to blackmail or otherwise control anti-establishment politicians. We defeated Nazi Germany. We won the Cold War. Putin's Russian Federation is far less capable than its Soviet predecessor. China remains a paper tiger. Have our intelligence agencies simply become bored with competing against our Lilliputian foreign adversaries? Is that why they are so busy manufacturing domestic threats to democracy?

you are one atom, you stay an atom, you aren't entitled to create or join a structure that is not on the menu of the season, so we should say, post-structuralism is an attack on democracy in that you cannot form interest groups outside of what oligarchy grants you with their grace.

I also remember people like Thomas Friedman saying that democracy will end the world.. people will never agree to change fast enough..we have to be more like China..since then, I've heard other intellectuals make very solid claims that democracies are actually very good at doing things like fixing environment problems and population issues..but we are in a totalitarian moment where many young people have been educated against democracy..many if you talk with them honestly don't get the value of freedom or free speech... they're trained to trust gov

I think we just need to disclose all the funding happening by certain foundations. We need to show where all of the tentecles are infiltrating both directly and indirectly. I think people would be shocked at how much control, manipulation and influence a handful of people have over the world. People can easily be bought.

Is it still considered censorship when a non-governmental organization is doing the censoring or protecting the narrative with disinformation? Isn't the police power of government the thing that defines censorship? (I consider taxation and regulation to be natural extensions of those police powers.)

Great. For me it is about hegemony in the sense Gramsci said institutions need to be hijacked by the political movement he advocated. The other character to consider is Nicklaus Luhmann, the now dead German systems theorist. He talked of institutions being like a living organism able to self replicate and employ survival strategies. The conspiracy theory description that often comes to mind need not be conscious in the sense of malevolent. It is maybe more the idea itself that has taken over the minds of a group of people. There is a legal system aspect to the rise of fact checking in that public organisations fear being sued for defamation and ‘causing harm’. Harm does not need to actually happen for the threat of potential legal suits to be extremely disruptive to large organisations. The law suits are the new way pressure groups can apply pressure provided they are funded. This is where non profit organisations, Blair, Gates a d other foundations they exist to ‘do good’. Alas only good in the mi do of those who set them up. People with messiah delusions are self selected simply because they are psychologically unsuited for that role.

Years ago I remember a guest from Stanford on NPR saying it was only a matter of time before "we" will be able to force every company to recycle by coercion.."if you don't recycle , we'll stop your advertisers or supply chain or bank to put you out of business." That expanded to equality and then everything.

  • @JH-ji6cj

Yep, coercion vs education. The idea being that if you know what is best for the people by decree then it is best administered by law or forceful persuasion over educational or progressive measures. Progress does not, to my knowledge, iinfer immediate change like current Progressives may imply. I don't think State Planned control is much different from Religious conformity. Those who would want the 10 Commandments in every classroom have similar, if not the same, social impulses as those who are currently wanting rainbow flags in them. And in both instances, it's the road to Hell being paved with good intentions.
