think, this is the man, tom cruise, who worships him, salutes him and emasculates himself for over 30 years to miscavige! who calls miscavige, the leader of his "religion" his best friend (who in reality in laughing behind his back and using him), and who seemingly does not understand that a religious leader HAS no best friend because it's improper, immoral and unethical to treat any member above other members. And i'm pretty sure most "religious leaders" do not hang out doing all kinds of non religious activities with a member like attending car races, riding motorcycles together, and so on. And i'm pretty sure most "religions" don't have "handlers" to "handle' a member by giving them access to their professional and personal life...

For anyone curious, Miscavige learned that the show would be split up into two parts right before the interview was about to happen. Fearing that they would style their questions in the first part of the show to make him look bad in the second part, "Miscavige grabbed [Nightline's exec producer] by the shirt collar, pushed him against the wall, and screamed in his face, “YOU LIED! You’re trying to fuck me over! You handle this or we’re all walking out!”" They caved to his demands, showed him the pre-recorded segments, and aired them at the top of the show. This is from a memoir by Mike Rinder, who escaped Scientology after working for decades in its top ranks. Really interesting read.

I just began watching this and from the beginning, Ted Koppel says that a lot of people were afraid to speak about Scientology. He and his team deserve credit for airing this story and interview, probably especially his team since Ted's high profile may have given him some level of protection from harassment. I am acquainted with someone who worked for NPR decades ago, and she told me that she got some kind of tip that led her to a naive investigation into Scientology. Soon thereafter, she got bizarre anonymous phone calls and I think also a letter with vaguely threatening comments telling her to cease her investigation immediately. She was unnerved and told her producer about it, and her producer told her to stop the investigation immediately, saying that Scientology is a dangerous organization that harasses journalists and has been linked with deaths of people and that it's best to leave it alone. And so she did, and she was very shaken up. After she dropped it, they stopped harassing her. So the organization stayed largely out of the media for a long time at least in part by intimidating journalists, and any journalist who followed through with any investigation really deserves credit. I can't help but be a little bit amused by Miscavige's claim that an organization that calls itself a cult awareness nerwork is a 'religious hate group.' I do wonder how many people who belong to harmful cults hear the term 'cult' used in reference to their groups and take offense.

Many (almost all) of journalists who are in the business today got their jobs because #1) they are great looking AND #2) their parents were rich enough that they could afford unpaid internships in the business until they got their first shot. That is it. Looks and money. What journalism does NOT require today (something that Ted Kopel possessed) is intelligence and quick thinking. Ted was able to respond (in turn) to each of David's points. There pretty much isn't a journalist working today that could do that without following a perfectly worded script. They can't think like that because they can't think. In 2002, Katie Couric interviewed Ann Coulter. All Katie could do is ask gotcha questions from a script and when Ann responded (in turn) Katie would dismiss all of Ann's rebuttals with the comment "well I am conducting the interview and I will ask the questions." Katie could never match wits with Ann Coulter (that could never happen) BUT she got her position in the media because of her looks and connections. She can't do any investigative anything, but she made the big bucks. Journalists and reporters, they do not want to be challenged on their own shows. To be challenged might expose the fact either A) they don't know anything or B) they can't think or possibly C) they don't know anything AND they can't think. Those are not pre-requisites' for an industry where the people working in it are focused on looks and money.
