    John King I think you got two different events mixed up. This was a good night for Conan I'm sure but I THINK you're talking about the actual interview that Dave did as a guest with Conan. Dave's kind of quietly always been a huge supporter of people he deems genuinely funny and or talented. It's why he agreed to do Regis Philbin before Philbin had heart surgery so he could talk about his own experience in order to reassure Regis, it's why he was the final guest on Jon Stewart's last show for his talk show (pre-daily show), and it's why he frequently made appearances on Conan in the first year or so of Conan's show when he was struggling in the ratings. Deep down Dave, in spite of all his flaws, is a really good guy.

  • @johnking5174

    @johnking5174

    He is, I wish he accorded the same treatment to James Corden. I still remember the interview he did with Regis when Regis guest hosted the Late Late Show and Dave called him the tubby kid and why was he not already hosting the show. He was made to apologize on air about it, and his apology was half ass and insincere. I think since he lost control of ownership of the Late Late Show he was not a happy man. Also he never appeared with Craig Ferguson on his tenure of the show. Craig turned the show around and made it a success and Dave just ignored him apart from the odd time Craig would appear on his show. Craig himself said to Larry King that you can watch all the contact he had with Dave on KZread.

    At 7:06, Joan actually offers a highly plausible explanation for the whole "pissed" quotation in whatever article Dave read. In the U.K., "pissed" means inebriated, so she might very well have commented to some reporter that she was "pissed on the show", meaning that she'd had a few beforehand, perhaps to steady her nerves before appearing on Letterman. What's amazing is despite her many appearances as an actress on many different programs, etc., I still consider Joan Collins ICONIC because of the single episode of Star Trek The Original Series with which she was involved ( and one I consider one of the best pieces of television ever - STTOS episode: City on the Edge of Forever)!

    I grew up with Conan more than any other host, and looking back I love how Dave repeatedly went to bat for Conan. Conan himself has said time and again that he's forever in Dave's debt for the Dave lending his formidable star power during Conan's early seasons. I think after the whole Tonight Show fiasco following Johnny's retirement, Dave just felt for this awkward kid starting out in his old time slot doing his damnedest to make a halfway decent show.
