Had no idea about the CGI blood; I have always been of the opinion that CGI blood is always terrible and can't ever look right. Fincher proved me wrong without me even knowing it. Nice.

CGI blood is used a lot. Game of thrones uses it. You only notice bad cgi.

As a compositor this is 90% of our jobs. fixing things no one will ever notice or would think should happen. I mean sometimes we create dust storms on Mars, but usually we're removing boom mics, adding time appropriate flags and advertisements or blood splatter. Grinds my gears when people complain about CG cause they don't notice 98% of what we do.

Exactly. Grinds my gears as well. Not a VFX artist, but have worked with them and am friends with a couple of them. Have always admired the work they do. So, yeah... I feel you.

Yeah, I sort of have mixed feelings exactly because of that. The types of techniques mentioned in this video, like set extensions and tracking or replacing faces, building entire cities or comping parts of cities to make it time-period accurate, blood splatters and props, etc. are not unique to David Fincher at all. I'm not saying that it's not impressive but it sort of felt like a waste to focus this on David Fincher when this is prevalent in most movies nowadays. Kaptain tried to tie it in with Fincher specifically, but it's hard for me to grasp it when this is all very common (90% as you said). It certainly shows his commitment to the exact shots that he wants to justify certain VFX shots (i.e. gummy bear), but it's not uncommon and also why directors rely more and more on previs now. Maybe this is just because I also work in CG (feature animation but still)? I did find this as a great video to generally explain the amount of unseen or subtle work roto artists, compers, lighters, etc. do, but not anything specifically David Fincher related. So I'm glad that it seems so many people are learning about this. Just sounds like Fincher's had a great CG supervisor on all his films. I'd have loved to learn more about how his background at ILM helped inform his decisions. But again, I did think this was a great video explaining the work of these overlooked (and underappreciated) artists. And I love that we've been getting more frequent vids from kaptain!

Animation|Complex I always get a little annoyed when I hear about how undervalued VFX artists are. Hollywood is one of those few places a union is accepted in America, so form one and/or push for greater recognition. If that won't work because a sweaty Indian man can do your job for 4 bucks a pop maybe you should move to another field.

But if you aren't unwilling to accept the complexity of the global VFX industry's labor problems there's not much left to this conversation.

This is an uninformed statement. Other areas of the entertainment industry aren't faced with foreign subsidies, fixed bid contracts, and powerful resistance against organizing.

I find it ironic that Fincher's only movie to win the Best Visual Effects Oscar (Benjamin Button) is the one where the effects are most obviously being used.

It's not really. Best visual effects incorporates, design, realisation and implementation, so shots that are being discussed in this video, whilst obviously useful, are not bold enough or interesting enough to warrant an oscar. SO many films use lots of tiny VFX that people wouldn't realise that these aren't particularly special

I would encourage you to check out the Fincher video on the channel "Every Frame a Painting." I'm not here to compare the two videos; both are great. I just think that if you enjoy this one, I think you'll enjoy that one too. (Also, that channel is fucking great. Not a lot of videos - and I think it's been at least a year since the newest - but even the categories I don't care about - like one on Buster Keaton - are fascinating.) And another fantastic channel that has a very good Fincher video is "Lessons from the Screenplay". True Detective vs Se7en - Creating Light Amongst the Dark kzread.info/dash/bejne/p3-HpsWtc5XVXdY.html Although obviously that one isn't about Fincher generally so much as one of his movies specifically. It's very much about the story and not the creator, but I think it's very well done. (It's not contrasting the two, like the title may imply, so much as talking about how they both do things in a really interesting way. It's appreciating both, not talking about how one is better, which I like.)

Knowing this, changes my perspective of the use of CGI in films, really.

Well you know, I for one don't mind even if CGI is obvious, as long as it looks good. Same with older types of effects (mate paintings, models, etc): I don't mind the fact that they are obvious if their aesthetics works and the movie as a whole stay coherent in it's look. It's why I can enjoy fully green screened films like speed racer and to a certain degree sky captain and the world of tomorrow (despite some shots that doesn't look as good as the others), or older films with obvious fake sets like batman returns (for example): they all clearly look like effects, but their visual style still works.

Agreed. I love my popcorn summer films to blow me away with CGI, but not the films I get emotionally invested in. Or so I thought. I saw a video recently showing the CGI in Mindhunter, a show I’m obsessed with. I could not believe how much CGI was necessary to pull off the late 70’s and early 80’s. It truly blew me away. It wasn’t noticeable, but it allowed me to stay emotionally invested in the story. Makes perfect sense now. I’ve heard actors, most recently Jonathan Groff, talk about Fincher’s genius. I understand now even more why.

Man, seeing Gone Girl really gave me hope of seeing a Fincher directed Batman film after Ben chose to step down.. I'd watch a 2-3 hour mystery/crime thriller with the World's Greatest Detective directed by Fincher any fucking day of the week. That said, Matt Reeves is a phenomenal choice as well.

I KNOW!! Ever since i've heard that Ben was not going to direct The Batman, my whole thought were: "I mean, David Fincher already worked with Affleck in Gone Girl... he can direct The Batman!". Can you just imagine how fucking awesome would be a Batman movie with a crime/neo noir style ala Se7en or Zodiac combined with the gritty violence of... let say, Fight Club? Yeah, sounds too good to be truth, but one can dream. I'm really hoping that WB Don't mess up with Reeves work, he is a far more competent director that any of those who already worked in the DCEU

Your videos are such an inspiration. Can't think of anyone who edits as flawlessly as you do.

Couldn’t agree more. David Fincher is not only a filmmaker! He’s a visionary and he gets feelings and goosebumps in there too!

I always knew Fincher used CG for certain camera moves, but I never realized it was to this level. New even greater respect for him after this video, and more to you as well for the excellent editing!

The fact that he cares more about immersion than he does showing off shows why he’s better than most art house filmmakers

This actually made me curious on how he'll use CGI in World War Z 2.

Ered1995j I recently read a profile on Brad Pitt, I think it was by GQ and Brad said Fincher and him are really good friends after separating from Angelina he didn't want to be alone so he stayed over at David's house for a couple weeks. It's one of the best actor-director partnerships I know I'm super excited for World War Z 2

My God, do I love this channel. I remember when there was only like five videos on here and I'd just watch them on loop.

Kristian you're the reason KZread exists. You'r a regular guy who has a things he's passionate about with an amazing talent in visual essays. You're editing, thumbnails, narration, and presentation are so incredibly well put together. Behind all of that, you're just a normal guy who, as you put it, "creates visual love letters."

Just noticed how many popular blogs are sharing this video, with credit too. so proud of you for how far you've come man, love what you do, keep it up.

I love this channel and it's videos. There is so much knowledge on the subject and so much work done to show things that we all missed. Every time I watch one of these I get lost in the subject matter, and am left wanting more. These videos seem like they will be long, but it seems like in an instant they are over and done. Truly great content.

Fincher is just giving all his friends work, and I appreciate that.

He's been one of my favorite directors for some time now but this video made me develop a whole new level of appreciation for his movies. Fantastic stuff.

David FIncher did direct that movie but there's a bunch of reasons for the moveis quality. you should check out Chris Stuckmans page on it, he did an indepth talk with someone. it goes for like 40minutes but really you can just skip ahead to when his guest starts talking and listen to him for like less then 10 minutes and you'll understand.

Start with Fight Club and Se7en And if you like them climb on to Zodiac (I think his most subjective film besides Alien 3),Gone Girl ,The Social Network and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Think about The Game ( in my eyes a little bit overrated) I for myself still haven't seen Benjamin Button and Panic Room

Of all the videos analyzing Fincher that I've seen, this is one of the best. All the other videos always use the same facts (his camera movements and color palettes) and you did a really good job talking about his use of CGI.
