The first time I saw Gone Girl, I thought "That was very well done. Really good movie." The second time I saw Gone Girl, I thought "My goodness... there is so much here. This is a great film." I still need to watch it a third time, but the more I think and read about this film, the more I'm convinced that it's one of Fincher's best, right up there with Zodiac. Once you start to see the film as Fincher sees it (a mystery that turns into a thriller that turns into a satire) and really start viewing the scenes from that perspective, it all folds in on itself beautifully and creates an incredibly rich thematic tapestry. That's so corny, but really, this movie has SO MUCH going on. Love it. Fincher is my favorite director because I can't think of a single filmmaker other than him who could make this story work so well.

Agree, on second viewing you see there is a lot under the surface. I think underneath the mystery, thriller and satire there is a lot of similar themes to do with perception vs reality and manipulation of people. Just behind "Zodiac" and "Social Network" as his best film.

First viewing is a knock- out A movie. On subsequent viewings, I agree with Trent Reznor: it's a nasty film. B+

He's the Kubrick of our times. Very cold and inscrutable but a specific perfectionist with compete mastery over the camera. A true genius, although he'd probably hate being called such.

In terms of camera style yes lots of pans but in terms of story no he is more like the style of Kubrick and the story of a Hitchcock movie.

well, to be honest it does sound a bit strange to give the main role of a picture to a famous actress and instead of call her, text her. Quite impersonal in my view, but thats perhaos my latin roots talking and no one will agree, or perhaps its the modern world, but its not the way Id do her (freudian slip), sorry I mean its not the way Id let her know. Overall the interview was better from Simon's part (of which Im not fan when hes with kermode but as an interviewer hes quite good) than from Fincher's side, probably because he was tired, havent heard the man elsewhere
