+Emilie asmrose Don't apologise for your English - I'm sure it's a lot better than our French! I understand how that film might be troublesome if you don't speak English as a first language. I'm English and understand American accents quite easily, because I watch a lot of American films - I prefer them to English ones. But at times there are bits of dialogue that I just can't get, (when the director is going for realism and the actors mumble etc.) The film was long too. It really helped if you already knew a lot about the case before you saw the film. If you hadn't done a bit of research before watching it - I can understand how it could come across as boring. Especially since the killer isn't caught in the end. The thrill of the film for me ( if it isn't too crass a word when describing a film about a serial killer ) is the list of suspects and the overwhelming circumstantial evidence against Arthur Leigh Allen - whom DNA evidence eventually exonerated. Still we're left with the knowledge that Mike Mageau ( the victim shot in the car with the woman in the opening scenes ) positively identified Allen as the shooter. It's an endlessly fascinating time in history I think. I loved the film because I'm kind of obsessed with the case. I don't think they'll ever know the Zodiac's true identity now.

Zodiac is a masterpiece! I think people realize that more now, because people thought it was about a serial killer when it isn't exactly. Its a deeply layers story, and directed so well you can watch over and over and find something new. Fincher uses his money and time wisely!

I got some David Lynch's Dune vibes for some reason. Both Fincher and Lynch, after finishing their studio films, immediately went to work on films that had small budgets, but offered more creative freedom (that being Seven and Blue Velvet). Both Fincher and Lynch are also ashamed of Alien 3 and Dune respectively.

I don't think anyone really blames Fincher for the Alien 3 debacle. I think it shows once again how badly studios interfere with a directors vision to their own detriment. Fox needed that movie and in a hurry. The wanted it on time and under budget. There was no creative freedom left for Fincher when he took it over. The studio was under the gun already. Repeatedly I have seen Sony and Fox destroy their own movies by not letting the director do his best. If you didn't trust the guy you picked to spend your 100 mil then why the hell did you give it to him? My respect to everyone who worked on that film. I did enjoy both versions in their own way. If your the studio pick your director carefully ,if you just want a formulaic movie. If your a director and they come to you ask yourself can you yield your principles to make the movie they want? If not best to walk away then. Are we making a Film or a Movie?

I dunno man, I think you're underestimating how little the majority of people know about the behind the scenes nonsense with a lot of big films. To a lot of people David Ayer ruined Suicide Squad, Marc Webb ruined The Amazing Spider-Man, Martin Campbell ruined Green Lantern, Ridley Scott ruined Kingdom Of Heaven, Marc Forster ruined Quantum Of Solace & World War Z, and Sam Raimi ruined Spider-Man 3... I think a lot of people just see a film, don't like and go "Who made that? Oh it's (director), they done a horrible job", and that's just how they view it. I remember explaining the mess that was Justice League with my parents and they didn't know the studio could just change things at will. They assumed that once the director is hired (unless they do something to get them fired), all responsibility is placed on them for the entire project, with the studio sitting back fantasising about the money they'll make.

I once had an idea for a Crime-Drama/Murder-Mystery Thriller movie that I could see Fincher directing! It was something like The Departed meets Silence of the Lambs! The plot revolved around two female protagonists, one is a straight-laced and brilliant FBI agent assigned to assemble and lead an elite team of special agents to track down a cunning yet highly-intelligent serial killer and the other is a hard-edged and unorthodox rogue narcotics officer going against her assignment by infiltrating a crimelord's drug/sex trafficking ring in order to find a missing girl and to avenge her late son's murder. The two young women's lives collide and they both come to realize that their investigations are strangely but coherently connected to each other.

theeab1993 Thank you! It was just a raw idea I had for a movie that was dark, gritty, atmospheric, bone-chilling, and suspenseful. Just imagine a movie that was like The Shield meets Criminal Minds or Grand Theft Auto meets Heavy Rain but as a movie. I had Jennifer Lawrence and Rooney Mara in mind for the lead roles. Lawrence as the vengeful and street-smart DEA agent using illegal and unethical methods to destroy a drug kingpin's empire and Mara as the intelligent and by-the-book FBI agent who is determined to bring a demented psychopath to justice. Lawrence's character would be like a female mixture of Billy Costigan (The Departed) and Vic Mackey (The Shield) and Mara's character would be like a mixture of Clarice Starling (Silence of the Lambs) and Mya (Zero Dark Thirty). With the right screenwriter (If not me) and the right director (if not Fincher) it could not only be a surprise box office smash but a critically-acclaimed Oscar nominated masterpiece specifically for the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (For both Jennifer Lawrence and Rooney Mara), Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and etc! It could happen!

Alien 3 wasn't Fincher's fault, it was a rushed, and troublesome production from the start, and he took a very subpar movie, and made it competently enough to come out half decent, of course the strong performances from the lead actors helped as well. I didn't hate Alien 3, it isn't a terrible film, it was just a very disappointing sequel after Aliens, which for some fans is the favorite in the series.

Alien 3 was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre. I was only 10. I remember rushing to the toilet to puke when the doctor performed the autopsy on Newt.

@ExtremeBogom nothing wrong with emotional directing (thta might be good as it could be meaningful. ) Most american directors seem to make films for bravado, to show off. In my vid response I commented on Nolan for example, he worked on inception screenplay for over 10 years, that's dedication. Few american directors have that. also your respone tried to be all-encompassing was just tactless, superficial, and rubbish, imho.

yup!!! nuff said. after hearing his explanation as to why alien3 sucked, I have come to find a forgiveness for the less than satisfactory quality of the film. I now have more motivation to buy the blu ray anthology of the alien series. at least i can hear his commentary of the film.

I guess its just me but I honestly didn't think alien 3 was bad. They killed off the characters from 2 in a very cheap way and the writing and plot were cynical and emotionless, which I'm rather drawn to though. Otherwise I don't see why it gets such a bad wrap. Don't condemn me for this but I actually liked aliens(alien 2) less because it was never really scary, suspenseful yeah, nothing that gave me goosebumps and I thought the acting was better in 3 too.

@OneManShowShow okay this is just rambling but you may have (helpfully) touched on why I loateh american films (and joyfully boycotted watching them over 3 years ago). it may be the lack of depth, but they've become serial films. It's the lack of depth PLUS the facade that they are meaningful, when they are rubbish! sure a non-deep film like....idk why terminator 2 comes to mind...is fine; it doesn't try to be spectacular.

Fight club was David fincher's masterpiece in my opinion! that film was just so incredible wen I 1st watch it (I loved the writing) and even wen I see it now. I tell ya the writer of fight club "Chuck Palahniuk" and David flincher should just work together and make great movies for the wrest of there carers and life's. We would have great films like every 2 years if they just did that. wouldn't be as good as fight club thou, (sorry shouldn't of mentioned it, 1st rule of fight club is not to talk about fight club) obviously.

I disagree, I think Fight Club is easily his most interesting and best thematically, because there are so many different and various philosophies thrown at the audience, plus a sort of angry satirical look at consumerism (although I think most people miss the conclusion of Fight Club which is that you can never fully escape that consumerist society as you are part of it). But in terms of movie making Fight Club is quite flawed especially the second half which drags quite a bit. Zodiac and The Social Network are his most flawless films. But fight club is the film that is most personal to most audience members.

Yeh..Fincher was merely a puppet director on Alien3..the producers and Fox were to blame for overriding everything Fincher tried to achieve...scripts changing during shooting...Alien3 could have been great..but luckily for fincher the next Alien movie was worse and what followed isnt worth talking about...Back to Fincher, everything he has done after from 7 to Benjamin button has a real Ridley Scott feel to it...Great Director
