I can definitely believe it. If you or anyone else hasn't seen David talk about the time he met Jim Belushi, I recommend giving it a listen to see just how polar opposite two Hollywood "stars" can be (I put the word "stars" in quotation due to it referencing Jim, who was far from being one even when he was still getting work). I get what he's saying about the gene thing. My dad was a meth addict, had the empathy level of a serial killer, and was abusive both mentally and physically. I'm glad he abandoned me while I was pretty young, but I always worried about turning into him. I thought it was hereditary and that I was doomed to be coming just like him. It's still in the back of my head to this day, but I'm nothing like him. I'm raising my daughter as a single dead and I don't touch drugs. The person you develop into is solely dependent on the person you want to be. You create your path and your personality.

The trauma of abandonment can have real, lasting impact. The pain never subsides. But making sure you don't pass it along drives your relationship with your kids. At least, it does mine. It's not a gene. The part that holds the pain and amplifies it, however, is. I've struggled my entire adult life, never realizing the cause of the struggle were the events I'd blown off years before.

If David saw me on the street he would know immediately that I knew him from Mr. Show, and if he was REALLY good, which he is, he'd narrow it down even more to knowing precisely what sketch I most associate with him, which is, and I'm sure I'm not alone - the audition scene where the casting director keeps interrupting him thinking he's finished with this monologue when he very much is not. Thank you, David, for all that you contribute to the comedy world.

He perfectly summed up my feelings when it comes to having children. My father left a little while after I was born leaving my mom with two small children less than 2 years old. I've always wondered if there's a switch in my mind or a recessive gene that's gonna 'activate' somewhere down the line and make me want to leave. Subjecting a kid to 18 fatherless years and being thrown into adulthood as confused as I am now. I honestly can't even bare the thought. What I _do_ know now %100 is that I'm definitely not ready to have kids. I'm just going from there and hopefully one day I do feel that I'm ready to bring another me into the world.

He was a guest at a hotel I worked for, and I was excited by the idea of meeting him -- even if only briefly, and with a firm, professional LACK of fanboying whatsoever. We really have to restrain ourselves in that industry. When he came through the lobby, we made eye contact briefly, but it was clear that he was NOT in the mood to talk, so I respectfully went back to browsing on the computer as though it was no big deal. After seeing this, I'll now always wonder if he would have known I was a Mr. Show fanatic.. I probably would have given it away with a sly little "Terra-daloo" added to some innocuous hotel-speak.

The most difficult part of being a kid whose parent up and left is seeing that it had nothing to do with anything about you and your worth as a child and a person, but was about the abandoning parent's inability or desire to be a parent or to be a person in a family, period. Not so much running from being a parent specifically to you, but from the dedication to fulfilling the role of parent. Not that this intellectual realization will fill the longing for a dad or eliminate any hurt and or anger for this missing person not being there, but hopefully it can be a first step to rebuilding one's self-esteem and feeling of worth. And maybe it can be the root of the rebuilding of understanding, empathy and sense of redemption to realize that although the missing person's act left an emotional mark on you, you are your own, separate person who can see how the dynamics of this whole thing went down.

My dad did the same thing. Even though 30 yrs later he apologized for it, he still felt justified in doing it. I disagreed and told him so. He said: well that’s your opinion. So I told him he missed out on so much that he will never get back, including a trusting father/daughter relationship. I’m glad I got him back in my life before he passed away, but that broken trust that does have a tendency to make you doubt yourself because I am more like him that I am like my mother. But having him back in my life sort of gave me a look into his thought process that I could clearly see was not mine. So I think my years of loyalty to others in difficult conditions, including to him through his death, help me prove to myself that when things get tough, I would never abandon my own children. No matter how tough it got with them. And I’m much older now than my father was when he left us. So I have that sort of peace regarding that business that would have been left unfinished if he hadn’t come back in all his messiness.
