He's only a 'soccer icon' outside of Europe. At his peak (1997-2001), he had a good two or three seasons where he was unplayable for Man Utd, but he's more known for his celebrity status than he ever was a footballer.

Andrei Ferariu well actually when marqodna was around In Italy around the mid 80s to early 90s, maldini was still quote young and he did say though that out of all the great players he faced, that maradona and ronaldo el fenomeno were the greatest.

Teams usually play in this formation: 4-3-3: Left back - Central defender - Central Defender - Right back Defensive midfielder Central midfielder - Attacking midfielder Left winger - Striker - Right winger Messi his natural postion is a winger but he evolved into a striker. Beckham is a attacking midfielder/winger. But he also played as a central midfielder. An attacking midfielder plays more behind the striker and wingers and attacks more with the ball as in dribbles and setting up the attacks. Left forward or left winger is the same.

mysecondchannelable to keep it basic, there are forwards, midfielders, defenders. They play in different 'roles'. For example you have a central forward. He can be a striker. Or a false nimber nine. Or a targetman. Or a poucher. Or a hanging striker. You also wingers. He can play as a full winger. Or a inside winger etc.

Messi is a rightwinger who has like a free role and falls down all the way to midfield or maybe even to defence while ball is on them to create the play.

There is nobody that can stop messi or ronaldo when they are in good shape. But some make really good efforts. You should check out Puyol, Maldini, Ramos, Chiellini, Boateng, Thiago Silva (there are alot more) and for Goalkeepers you should check out Neuer, De Gea, Buffon, Casillas

So Beckham was a Midfielder, his role most of the time wasn't to score himself but set up plays for everyone else, primarily the Strikers (attackers). Midfielders can still score, it's certainly not off the cards, but usually they position themselves to recieve the ball and the Strikers usually try to think ahead and position themselves to recieve it from there. Beckham was the right midfielder of 4-4-2 formation... messi is the right winger (attacker) of 4-3-3 formation.. striker is the one who is closest to opponent's penalty area.... strikers: ibrahimovic, ronaldo , suarez... right wingers: messi , robben.... left wingers: cristiano ronaldo , neymar.. midfielders have position around kick-off circle..there are attacking midfielders, central midfielders, defensive midfielders, backs, defenders, sweepers...... :D unlike basketball there are a lot of roles to play in football and roles depend on the formation that the coach prefers .. :)

There's many different positions for midfielders, for instance, Center Attacking Mid (CAM) ,Center Mid (CM), and there can be a holder which particularly is a midfielder but is in between the mid and the defenders, mainly called Defensive Mid. Finally there is the right and left lateral midfielders. Now wingers there's two which are the right and left, they're either on the side lines crossing the ball to strikers or they're moving into the middle of the pitch to score. Beckham was a no 7 which is actually a right wide midfielder (rm) or right winger (rw). he cud and did sometimes play cm. he was one of the few top class wide men to not have a lot of pace. his inteligence vision passing and crossing was so devastating he didn't need pace. he only needed a small amount of space to pick the perfect ball. so basic positions: defence - right/left fullback, right/left wingback , centre back and sweeper midfield - defensive midfielder, central midfielder, attacking midfielder, right/left midfielder, right/left winger attacker - right/left wing forward, striker, forward centre (this us known as the no10 position) most top attackers nowadays are really flexible and can play across all attacking positions. (messi ronaldo suarez bale etc). then u have a few specialist top attackers like ibrahimovic and lewandowski who'll stick to one role (striker aka no 9) hope that helps a little. ps u shud react to lewandowski 5 goals in 9 minutes. he's one of the best strikers in the world and produced something magical here

Wingers aren't midfielders 😂 I have played winger all my life, our duty is to open up space or closed them. We mainly cross the ball to our strikers and if we have a chance to take on 1 v 1 we will and try to score. We mainly help the lateral midfielders, which aren't wingers.

Well the case of Messi is strange because he is an attacker but he can play like a midfielder going down (Is Messi). The midfielder has to control the center and create occasions for attackers, like in this case, Beckham.

My best player growing up Becks he should never of left Manchester United. You should check his goals out he scored many of world class goals

But you have to see how Messi makes long passes changing the orientation like the best midfielders. Messi is famous only for his goals but he can be a great midfielder (incredibly). Ronaldinho also has a great vision and he can also do a long passes like Messi. They have a lot of precision in long passes. Its not the case of Cristiano Ronaldo or Suarez. If you want to see a very different type of player, the kind of player who's job it is to stop players like Ronaldo and Messi doing what they do, then you want to look at defensive midfielders. Makelele is one of the best ever, although players like Vieira and Roy Keane are perhaps a bit more interesting to watch. That being said their job is very difficult but not the best to watch, because they are there to disrupt the enemy team, stop them getting to the defense and maintain possession when they win the ball, which often means being very disciplined and not trying fancy tricks and often going for the safe, easy passes, to allow attacking players to move the ball forward.
