Zlatan Ibrahimovic Explains Fallout With Pep Guardiola At Barcelona

Ойын-сауық

Watch the full interview here: • Piers Morgan vs Zlatan...
Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by former Swedish striker and footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a detailed explanation of his fallout with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola and why his 'dream' transfer transpired into his 'worst nightmare'.
Zlatan believes that Pep failed to address issues with him directly and that this was the root cause for their falling out. Zlatan also adds that he felt Pep had it out for him from the beginning as his very first meeting with the manager led to him criticising Zlatan about driving his Ferrari to training.
Zlatan suggests that to this day he has no idea what the issue Pep had with him was and hasn't spoken to him since he left Barcelona. Zlatan added that when he played for Manchester United against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, the manager would avoid him in the tunnel.

As a Barca fan, when Zlatan said "I tried to fit in instead of being myself" made much more sense in retrospect. I saw him, he looked like he didn't know what to do, why he was even there, I saw when he scored a goal he celebrated much differently to how he celebrates. I still think Guardiola's stubbornness cost him one of the most clutch strikers, he could've used Zlatan the same way he uses Haaland now.

This makes me think of Etoo how pep was blatantly disrespectful towards him but he was scared to be honest with Ibra. Etoo and Ibra both vocal but I think Ibra is more likely to to get into a fight than Etoo which is why I don't get why he chose Ibra. His ego is bigger than Etoo's. How did he not expect them to beef? Both of them are the types to question you and have alot of pride as strikers he wanted them to just do as he says and follow messi's lead but they didn't want to even though they knew messi was the future. That transfer was only beneficial to Etoo and later on Pep

Not a mature interview at all. Only the last 2 minutes; until the last 5 seconds where he taps into his immaturity for one last dig. A coach has 2 ways to deal with a player that doesn't fit, attempt to coach him, or make up one's mind that he will not be part of the team and the first window that opens, the player will be gone. From Zatlan's perspective, he is assuming Pep was still thinking Zatlan was in his plans. From Pep's perspective, it was dealt with. Pep has Messi. Didn't need to have Zatlan spoil the dynamic with his big personality.

@@user-hi6us3gt7wBingo. Pep’s accolades prove that teams cannot have super-sized egos to have longevity. This is why teams like PSG and current MU suffer from playing like actual teams. Zlatan is definitely an ego player that couldn’t accept playing as a team player because he only knew how to play as a focal point. Messi was different because Pep could place him anywhere on the field, and he would produce and not say a word. Pep doesn’t care about being the most- liked in the room, he just cares about the functionality of what’s going on. Zlatan is a completely different person that wants to be the most-liked because he wants to prove his worth.

I am from Barcelona. When I was a child, my family used to call me "Koeman" because of my blond hair. I've never seen my dad so happy as when FC Barcelona won the Champions League against Sampdoria. My uncle would buy tickets for me, my sister, and my cousins to go to Camp Nou whenever he could. It didn't matter whether we were losing or winning; we would always go to support our team. Blau i Grana is in our DNA. Kubala, Cruyff, Schuster, Maradona, Messi, Xavi Hernández, Iniesta, Kluivert, Rivaldo, Stoichkov, Migueli, Puyol, Ronaldinho, Romario, Valdes, and many more - we loved them all. And of course, Zlatan is also on that list. I remember how excited we were when Zlatan joined the team and how sad we felt when he left. Later unfortunately bad times came with what I called Barcelanda era with all those Dutch players under Van Gaal including that horrible goalkeeper Jesp. I think nowadays, of course keeping Pep and Xavi distances in perspective, Barça with all this young talents could rise again in Europe, but is hard because the financial aspects should be solved and the whole Negreira noise reverberates every single day trough Marca and As sports journalists makes even harder.

Here's my view on the Pep/Zlatan situation. Pep was a very young manager then and he probably felt that he had a lot to prove when he was promoted from being the Barca B manager to being the manager of the 1st team in 2008. So, I understand why he was very strict with his players. Pep was also most likely scared of Zlatan and any player who had that "big" personality. Pep, at the time, did not know how to handle big egos other than to let those players leave. Pep has clearly grown over time and I think he would handle Zlatan very differently now to how he did back then. He'd most likely handle Zlatan the same way he handles Haaland.

The issue was that zlatan wanted to be played central while pep was playing messi central. Zlatan felt he was being wasted on the wing, which was true, but he simply just was not as good as messi. Pep was not willing to move zlatan central, and zlatan did not want to play on the wing, so they simply did not work together. If pep got a new messi and haaland did not want to stop playing striker, he would see the bench too. Simple as that.

@@nothanks8368 You are forgetting that Pep has evolved a tactician as well. Back then, Pep used the false 9 tactic in a 4-3-3 formation as his main tactic. But over time, we have seen him use a variety of formations like using two false 9's. Before Haaland came to City and when Aguero left, particularly in the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons, Pep used KDB and Gundogan as his two false 9's in a single game. In big matches like against Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal etc, Pep would often use a two false 9 system. At Barca, Pep used a single false 9 system. So, even if a Prime Messi would have played for Pep's City, pretty sure Pep would use the two false 9 system to accomodate both Messi and Haaland. Like I said, Pep has evolved as a manager. The lack of a Messi type of player in Bayern made Pep evolve his tactics to a great degree which has carried over to his City career.

Silent treatment is so unpredictable sometimes because you didn't know from the other side. Zlatan breath all the gases, guardiola is quite beside. But it happens and his carrer in Barcelona is not good, we can see it from Henry and Samuel etos year at camp nou. You see pep and Jose mourino are completely different best managers in football at this context. Jose want to have strong bond and attachment from his players, while you can't get it from pep. I don't see any player who felt sad and cry when he left the club. Which player say " I'm fan of pep" after he hangs up his boots? You can't get it from guardiola. I'd say Zlatan is top 50 all time, which alone is enough to make him a legend of the game, but even more important, he was totally unique in playing style. He's one of one, and he gave the game so much over the years.

Ibra described a typical Balkan man/woman attitude toward conflict. Many of us, certainly not all, like to resolve it head on. We don't like loose ends and misunderstandings. This can be perceived as aggression by folks of other cultures and ways of resolving conflict. It's acceptable in the Balkans and many other cultures, but is completely unacceptable in many other cultures as well. I understand both Ibra's and Pep's perspectives. Who's right in this? Neither. There are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches to conflict. Ibra should have been more subtle, while Pep should have been more open and communicative. The two opposite approaches collided; hence the conflict.

You may be smart enough to know the answer. I'm certainly not. Listening to Zlatan, it is clear that it was his personal trauma that shaped his way of dealing with the outside world. Zlatan talks a lot about surviving. Does a person who feels safe and secure think of their life as something that needs to be survived? Zlatan is a scared child that lashed out at any perceived threat. That trauma was transferred onto him by his parents, who were also clearly traumatized. Zlatan had no business throwing items at Pep and intimidating him, but I'm trying to understand and not simply point fingers.

Actually what you saw was at a time when Messi still didn't complain, after Messi complained to Pep about him being sacrificed, that time Pep changed Messi's position and Zlatan was being sacrificed. Just imagine the level of player Zlatan was/is that the so called GOAT was also jealous of Zlatan's performances that he had to complain to Pep so that he didn't get sacrificed. Also think about the fact that Messi played alongside many greats like Ronaldinho, Neymar, Suarez, Villa, Henry but he was jealous of that one player Zlatan who made him uncomfortable on the pitch, because during the first half of Zlatan's arrival, Messi couldn't score that many goals because Zlatan was getting all the goals, that's when he understood his career was at stake and he needed to take action immediately so that he doesn't lose credibility.

It's not Messi's fault that Zlatan struggled, and Messi's left foot alone is lightyears better than Zlatan's entire career. There's a reason why he has ZERO UCL trophies. He is extremely over-rated, just like Camelnaldo. It's just that Zlatan is still salty that he wasn't worshipped by Pep and Barca fans. Both Penaldo and Zlatan are egomaniacs who can't stand it when people don't worship the ground they walk on. In fact, the same thing happened to Penaldo when he came back to United; his huge ego wasn't stroked, so he threw tantrums and embarrassed himself, just like Zlatan did while he was at Barca. So both of them were rightfully benched. So go ahead and make up all the coping stories you want. It doesn't change the fact that Messi is the GOAT, just by HOW he plays, forget his achievements. He had a good rapport with Mourhino and was the prime man at Inter. Don't know why he moved to Barca. Despite all that, Ibra scored 16 goals that season (in 29 matches) [Same # goals as Suarzez] and scored the winner in El-Classico. Barca won the season with just 3 pts so that goal was crucial. As I always say, Ibra never had a poor season, that's why he is a legend of the game.

Back then Barcelona had a sponsorship from Audi, and the squad would be given brand new cars at the beginning of the season that they’d be expected to use as transport for club related activities(going to training etc) when Ibra drove his Ferrari to training it resulted in him getting a fine for breach of agreement. This wouldn’t be the first time that would happen, most recently the same would happen to Kingsley Conan in 2020 when he arrived to training in his McLaren instead of the Audi he was given.

Wow, can't believe how mature Zlatan has become now. In Ronaldo's interview, he goes on complaining about United, executives, the coach and says he has no respect for him. He was literally looking at everything only from his POV. With Zlatan however, his ability to understand Guardiola's POV and also clearly point out the difference between him as a coach and him as a person, and reiterate that he's still an amazing coach but is just afraid of confrontation is just amazing. Zlatan and Ronaldo are just levels apart when it comes to maturity, knowing how to deal with situations like this. He again goes on to say that if the coach told him straight to his face that he does not want him, he will leave without causing any problems (which is not what Ronaldo did). One thing is for sure, Guardiola (and managers in general) definitely needs to work on confrontation and letting people know when he's offended or doesn't like what someone is doing straight to their face instead of using a right hand guy or just avoiding the problem until it goes away. Edit: Completely agree with you all. Zlatan's interview was long after the incident happened, which was not the case with Ronaldo. I guess the lesson we all learn from this is to not react to situations that are not in our favour immediately (because then emotions take over) but step away mentally, take some time, calm down, let the emotions settle down, and then handle it sensibly. Especially in relationships. Thank you for pointing this out in your replies. Hope you all have a great day!

Zlatan is so calm and appears mature here cause it 15yrs since it happened. Time has passed, emotions have gone down, no anger..etc and he has also become more older. With ronaldo he did the interview when things are thick, emotions high..etc two different scenarious...maybe in the future both Erick ten hag and ronaldo would look back and see they could have handled it better

for me its just deep-rooted character n personality difference. its very normal in any part of the world that people will not get along for certain period of time(or maybe forever) due to the way they see, think n solve issues around them n thats when clash will happen when other party see it the other way. thats why zlatan mature over time to acknowledge his feud with pep are just them sticking to what they think is right.

So Zlatan throws something at Pep in a locker room full of other players and coaches and kit men and Pep doesn't react in any way, which is mature, but according to Zlatan, he is afraid of him and he is a coward? What is the point of yelling at him or throwing something back at him? Joao Cancelo, before getting shipped on loan to this and that club, allegedly also threw something at Pep in training and Pep didn't want to see his eyes again, this is how you deal with players who think they are bigger and more important than they really are.
