    I'm so happy with the way the rose is presented in the video. It's much better to see the whole plant and its habit in the ground rather than seeing close up shots of a potted plant. I hope you continue with this format!

    Thanks, the trials are on-going, so we will be posting more of our findings as they unfold, and we get the time! As you can imagine, it takes a fair bit of effort and expense to undertake (and maintain) this approach, but we regard it as being a very important part of our quest to determine the BEST performing selections, which of course is something we are doing all the time. So stay tuned because there's more videos like this coming...... Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find the information as well. Finally, now that our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are fully stocked with fresh new plants, if you live in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region be sure to stop in and take a look…. Because that’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, including lots of really great (and very beautiful) performing roses.

    Hi David! Your enthusiasm and passion show that you are still young! Your advice is very insightful and your garden is stunningly beautiful! I live in climate zone 3🥶😊 and you can’t find such tabernacles of paradise here, but my 4 roses wintered for 2 years, ground cover and even floribunda. Of course, I cover them for the winter and under the snow they cope with our Ural frosts. Do you think any Austin roses can be so winter-hardy, for frosts of -30°? Probably just to admire videos like this... but I want to try, in the end, I might put the sleeping roses in the basement before warms up?

    Yes, we grow and are fond of Olivia. It is a beautiful variety and like James L. Austin is named after an Austin family member, which is usually a good indication that the breeder thinks a lot of its qualities too. We find her to be a good performer, a bit slower to get established but once she settles in and gets going she puts on a terrific show. Stay tuned because at some point, David will almost certainly be profiling her qualities in his ongoing series on the top performing David Austin Varieties in our trials.

The tree in the background of this trial area is a purple leaved form of the European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) and this particular one is probably the 'Riversii' form We hope this helps and we are wondering if you have you subscribed to our channel? How do you fertilize your roses? So many buds!

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    6 ай бұрын

    Its very simple, we just apply a dressing of a well-balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring as we prune them. To maintain our independence we prefer not to detail specific brands, but if you talk to the experts at any our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ they will be able to guide you with the ones, that in their experience produce the best results in your area. And to explain a bit more, about how we get good results from our roses, let us mention that first of all, choosing the right varieties is very important, and that's why we do extensive trialing and testing, and as you watch the videos here on this channel you will be able to see the ones that in our experience preform best in our (Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic) region. Also, an annual prune in early spring helps to keep them healthy and vigorous, and in this video (also on this channel), David takes you through the process and shows (near the end) how to apply the fertilizer. We hope this helps explain how you can get better results and more enjoyment from your roses. And, during the main planting season (spring through late Fall) our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ which are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, will have all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly.

    I just bought Eustacia Vye and I appreciate your video on this beautiful rose. No buds yet but she is just starting to put on new growth. I hope that I get some blooms this year. What is your view on planting in pots and overwintering in pots inside an unheated garage? Should I plant it in ground in Fall or tuck it away in my garage overwinter?

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    Either way would be fine. Planted out means you get to see the full potential, less watering & no need to bring in and out, etc. On the other hand, having them in containers means you can enjoy it on decks, patios, balconies, etc. And move the plants around (if you want to). So, either way will work.

    Do all of the roses in this trial garden have drip origami on under the mulch? About how much water does each rose get per day? Are these roses every overhead watered, and if yes, does it result in black spot? These videos are so important for those not familiar with roses, especially the David Austin roses.

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    We used drip irrigation the first year after planting to get them established. Since then, it has NOT been used. They are on their own, that's part of the trialing process, just like they would experience in a garden situation. The mulch helps, of course. Most get Blackspot & it is noticeable when they get stressed in Summer, and that's when we evaluate for susceptibility. Some get it badly and defoliate, and look ugly! Others have it, but not enough to disfigue and stop them from putting on a decent show. It is these ones that we are interested in discovering - the ones that have natural resistance and will survive and thrive without the need to spray. There's no overhead watering either. Elsewhere, we water them overhead in the nursery, and that's where we watch for Blackspot, Downey & powdery mildew, etc. Together, looking at vigor, repeat flowering, habit & flower performance, i.e. do they "self clean" (not "ball") - Meaning flowers not open fully in wet weather. All this comes together for us to find the best performers that go into our variety line up.

    Glad to see the new Austin introductions are holding up their flowers with stronger stems. You say hardy to one 4; is that cane or crown hardy?? Because there is a difference. In my experience, David Austin roses are not cane hardy to zones 4/5 (-32 C/-25 F) and require winter protection no less than a hybrid tea or floribunda. They also need to be grafted on the appropriate understock to survive frozen soil. Exactly how much winter kill this 'Eustacia Vye' will suffer needs to be established. Even the Parfuma and Fairytale series roses from Kordes suffer substantial cane kill to the point that the damage is pruned off almost to ground level come spring. David Austin roses are simply gorgeous, but they are not 100% cane hardy compared to certain North American species roses, rugosa hybrids and once-bloomers such as Albas, gallicas, damasks and a few recurrent portlands such as the 'Duchess of Portland'. David Austin roses are truly cane hardy to zones 6/7. Having said that, a hard pruning in spring will nonetheless encourage a nice shrubby plant and large flowers to as much as a short growing season will permit. As a general rule, continuous bloom depends on continuous growth while cane hardiness and resistance to low temperatures depends on cessation of growth. Most recurrent and continuous blooming roses aren't programmed to shut down for winter so suffer winter kill as a result. There are a few exceptions to this rule however; roses such as rugosas, rosa palustris and a few Asian species carry the repeat blooming gene whilst exhibiting 100% cane hardiness. It is with such roses that a new line of varieties must be developed from scratch if total cane hardiness is to yeild continuous bloom for cold climates and northern areas. 🌹

    Thanks, for taking the time to respond. Our experience is limited to how they perform in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, and furthermore since our trial site is at our nursery in Southern New Jersey, we would mostly definitely defer to any knowledge about hardiness ratings beyond our region (which largely comes from our friends at David Austin Roses and their trial sites located elsewhere. Depends upon the variety, the weather conditions (cold & cloudy versus hot & sunny), but for most varieties, from emerging bud to bloom shatter, you can expect to get maybe about a week or so for each bloom. Remember, they are mostly cluster & repeat flowering, so there's more shoots and buds coming all the time.

    Hi David, Do you recommend own root or grafted roses for New Jersey zone 7A?

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    @OverdevestNurseries

    Жыл бұрын

    Either would be fine We are doing more & more work on "own root - and part of our David Autin trials is comparing how they do as "own root" varieties. Own root means no possibility of rootstock suckers & bushier plants that can be trimmed more frequently - which is why we like own root, but some vars. may not be vigorous enough, which is why we are doing our trials. Budded plants have the vigor of the rootstock, which is partly why they are done this way too.

    Are these roses planted in threes? or is it just one plant?

  • @OverdevestNurseries

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your question. Each of these plants are just one plant, and what's more some of them are vigorous enough to be on their own roots (not budded onto a rootstock). That's another part of our trials, testing them out to see which ones will grow and prosper without the added vigor of a rootstock variety. Budding roses is the traditional method of producing bare root roses in nurseries, but since all our plants are pot grown and we like to produce extra bushy, well shaped plants, growing them on their own roots is something we are investigating. So, stay tuned because David will be featuring more of our findings. Also, have you considered subscribing to our channel?
