@@patrickrfears nah man. Best Breakout album for that era...definitely the best. But AFIs best, most authentic, real raw album will always be Black Sails in the Sunset. That was the 1st album to showcase Dave's talent for melodies and the band was just so much more broad in their rhythms, speed, and soft undertones. The perfect blend that they would soon use to propel them into mainstream acknowledgement.

My niece has that Japanese hair straightening treatment Davey mentioned here. I have something to admit. As a late teen, my daughter listened to AFI all the time. I thought they were so noisy, LOL. I took her and her sister (who just came for the ride :))) to AFI concerts in NJ. Took them to see them, and also Good Charlotte. Davey passed right in front of my nose coming out to the stage in one concert (smaller place in NJ). The songs grew on me and now I have to say, I do like The Girl's Not Grey, Miss Murder, Dancing on Sunday(?), and Silver and Cold. My oldest also played the guitar to them, and so I have to say, now that she's on her own and so is her sister, I have empty nest syndrome and miss the songs being played at home. I didnt appreciate it when she played the songs so loudly, but I do appreciate them now after retirement. :)

Black sails is one of the most underrated, innovative, albums in 30 years. The band was dark, fast, tight, and had a completely unique sound on that album.

AOD was a great album. Perfect segway from Black Sails. I almost am tempted to say that AOD was their last album that represented their east bay hardcore roots. STS was more dark and less inquiring in that darkness than AOD...but you could feel the changes from their earlier ear bleeding past, throughout Art of Drowning. JMO of course lol

It's so interesting hearing where the sound for Sing the Sorrow came from - that it was what they wanted to make but didn't really have the proper tools to achieve. I remember my ex LOATHED that album and claimed it was because afi "sold out" when in reality it was the resources they had available that allowed them to finally bring that album to life.

Black Sails…, The Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow, the All Hallows’ EP, even December Underground are in my opinion the best records from AFI. I think that is the sound most fans associate with the band as well. I’ve heard some of the new music and for me, it doesn’t sound like AFI. At least not the AFI I saw headline hardcore day at Krazyfest all those years ago. Imagine me, an ignorant hardcore kid, not knowing who AFI was, standing right next to Davey, making fun of his attire to my friends. I was shut down by one of them saying “That’s Davey Havok. Vocalist for AFI. They’re headlining tonight.” I was confused. I stayed to see why a “punk” band was playing on hardcore day. I’m glad I did. That night changed my life. I’d never seen hardcore kids, metal kids, punk kids, together dancing, at the same time. The performance was stellar. Had literal chills. I’ve felt bad ever since. First, I was wrong for even judging him based on how he dressed. Sorry Davey. Second, I was wrong for assuming the band was purely a punk band (I wasn’t a fan of punk music). No, AFI had a little something for everyone. That was 20 years ago and that night is still forever embedded in my memory. I’ve seen the band perform a few times since then, a couple fest and once in a very small venue that was so hot condensation was forming on the walls and ceiling. Sorry for the story comment. Perhaps I’m just caught up in nostalgia. I wish Davey and the rest of AFI the very best. Stay safe XXX

One of the few bands that truly brings something new to the table with every release, effortlessly shifting their tone and overall formula in exciting, often unexpected ways, while simultaneously successfully iterating on existing ideas within their work, and somehow... it never feels like they're doing this just for the sake of change, or to keep up with trends. And yet, AFI (and all of Davey's side projects) manages to stay relevant, bouncing between genres and concepts as if it were second nature. You can tell Davey truly gives a shit about their musical processes, influences, and output, and it's always a joy to see which of these influences Davey and the gang decide to wear on their sleeves next.

It really is incredible to see the evolution of AFI over the years. Probably one of the most unique band evolutions I’ve ever heard. Starting off as pretty straightforward Hardcore Punk for the first few albums, then getting more into the Horror Punk genre on Black Sails and The Art Of Drowning, then pretty much becoming an entirely different band on Sing The Sorrow which went for a more theatrical and operatic approach very influenced by the Emo and Post-Hardcore scene while still maintaining their Punk roots. Decemberunderground went for a very similar feel, but it also added elements of Goth Rock and Electronic Rock into their sound before going full Alt Rock and Goth Rock with maybe a very small dash of Pop Punk on Crash Love. Ever since Burials though, they’ve fully committed to the Goth Rock and Post-Punk sound with Burials being the heaviest album they ever made with elements of Post-Hardcore thrown in and hell, I’d even say that album goes almost full Metal in places. The Blood Album was pretty much just standard Goth Rock and Post-Punk...and honestly just kind of a boring album NGL. I wanted to like it way more than I did, but it’s the only album of theirs that gives me very little to talk about unfortunately and even if I do have some trouble with their first 3 albums, I at least remember those albums and they at least give me things to talk about. Bodies based off the singles I’ve heard so far sounds like what they were trying to do on The Blood Album but way more refined and way better produced, but there are small elements of a lot of their previous albums thrown in as well. I love AFI and I’m definitely looking forward to the new album. Definitely sounds like it’ll be a huge step up from The Blood Album so far.
