The first one was great. Part 2 is the reason why you can't recreate the theater experience. Sound and visual can't be done on a phone or TV.. It's a true cinematic experience. Haven't had one like that in a while. It's a true masterpiece

Exactly. Movies like Dune 2 and Oppenheimer are ones that make you excited to not just see a movie but to actually be in the theater. We need more films that are worth seeing in theaters

Walken underplyaing is playing the part correctly and facilitated others. He's a weakened power and a shell of himself. And Zendaya was just fantastic

The book made it more obvious that Rabban was deliberately set up to fail so Feyd could take over. You'd almost start to feel sorry for him. The movie made all of that subtext that is impossible to get unless you've read the book, which makes Rabban's downfall less tragic and also less satisfying. In the movie it feels like Rabban botched it himself and he deserved what was coming to him (well he did, but you get the idea).

the best part of IMAX for this movie was the sound… it was insane

here’s the thing though in the book the Emperor still looked young because of Spice. He was 71 but looked 35, he would have looked the same age as Duke Leto age wise.

The first 30 minutes of Dune 2 is very quiet, and I'm just imagining the whole theater pissed off at Dave for crunching through multiple bags of popcorn during that.

Would NOT have expected Dave to be the type to like Dune.

The reason is executive cowardice. Disney blows most of the budget on redesigning everything in post-production, again and again until the committee is happy and nobody is personally responsible for the tepid outcome.

Lucas basically took Dune + Valerian & Laureline (look it up), and fit it in a Hero’s Journey narrative. Plus some of his own filmmaking inspirations.

Dune part 2 is a MASTERPIECE

both are great in their own right; reminds me of batman begins and dark knight

Being of an earlier generation, I still see Christopher Walken as the Oscar winner from the 70s (in Best Picture “The Deer Hunter”, beating other legends like Bruce Dern and John Hurt). Christopher Walken is not just “being Christopher Walken” in this film. (BTW, he and Javier Bardem are the only Oscar winners for acting in this film.) His performance in “Dune 2” is subdued, not exaggerated-no mustache twirling and no “Walkenisms”. He portrays the Emperor as a weakened ruler, past his prime. With some melancholy. Walken is a deserved Oscar-awarded actor, a pro, and a legend. Within limited screen time, he graces “Dune 2” as a good member of an ensemble team-with stardom, class, and dignity. A cinema king playing a king. Also recall back in the day Walken’s dance in Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice”. The song says, “walk without rhythm and it won't attract the worm”-pretty much predicting his future association with “Dune 2”!!! Walken is also a real badass in the 1980 mercernaries movie “The Dogs of War”. And in crime films like “King of New York”…

Part 2 with ease just a brilliant masterpiece

If Star Wars came out today, it would totally be just as epic as it was in 1977, because it is the story, pacing, and themes that make it so great.

Lucas copied from a lot of different sources, which Herbert acknowledged as well in his criticisms of Star Wars. Hidden Fortress by Kurosawa, Flash Gordon serials, Darth Vader is taken from Doctor Doom in Marvel. Dune’s influence is undeniable though and Lucas’ reluctance to talk about it was probably because of how recent the book was, ten years before the started making the movie, and just how many similarities there are.

I have never really been a Dave fan but him loving Dune came out of left field for me and I definitely have a different view of him. These 2 movies have become a litmus test for how much I like a person😂

Eh, as a massive Villanueva and sci fi movie, the movie is great but over rated. Definitely still isn’t on LOTR and Star Wars level (and yes, I get it, they copied dune). I honestly think blade runner and arrival are better films of Villanueva

The discussion about Lady Jessica's role in Dune Part 3 is interesting because she doesn't appear in Dune Messiah, she only comes back in the third book. This is something I feel should definitely be changed for Dune Part 3. She doesn't need to be Arrakis, but just show her doing sneaky Bene Gesserit stuff on different planets that are affected by Paul's conquest.

Dave being a serious OG. Dune is my favorite book of all time and I'm really old. Waited all my life for a worthy version. I longed for Peter Jackson to take the helm but this one works so well.

It's worth mentioning that while Star Wars is influenced by Dune, Star Wars is also heavily influenced by other sources like Kurosawa and pulp adventure serials

The main villain now is Paul. He was basically the villain in the last 20 minutes of the film. He's presented as a hero, but he's the bad guy and will cause billions of deaths after he gets the throne. Fun stuff!

Star Wars is mixed, some movies go darker, and others are more kid friendly.

I don't think its fair to say the emperor is supposed to be evil, but I agree that they should have casted someone less known

Not seeing in IMAX is a big miss especially if you can see it in 70mm

fun fact in the book the emperor was like in his 70-80s but because he took spice he only looked like he was in his 30s. Unfortunately Villeneuve thought it would confuse too many people so he just made him look old and thats the reason they cast Walkens.

Well he said in the books it just says “Paul and feyd fight here” and that they don’t really get into it. Uhhhh they absolutely get into it! Their knife fight is described in detail. So idk if he REALLY read the book

Dune 1 was very good. Dune 2 is great. Time passes so quickly I didn’t realize it was a 2 hour and 46 minute film.

I enjoyed both Dune movies, I wouldnt say i'm a big Dune fanatic, mainly because I thought the book was tough to finish....so much so that i just decided not to read Dune Messiah. But Dave cant call himself this huge Dune guy when hes of the opinion Emporer Shaddam is the most evil guy in the story. I'm not saying Walken was a good choice, but the character in the book and movies is definitely not some Evil baddy. He was a paranoid, envious man who was threatened by house Atreides.

I think you guys are nitpicking. I read the book as a kid and loved it. Making a movie from a great book is very difficult. Dune is so complex, many characters, different worlds, royal politics, trippy drugs, the sisterhood, a messiah, lots of internal dialogue…. The look and feel of this movie captured Arakis exactly as I pictured it. Yeah, it took lots of artistic liberties and had to lop off some things to streamline the narrative. I loved it, visually stunning, some solid acting. When it ended I realized I barely touched my $11 tub of popcorn. In contrast did you ever read Puzzo’s The Godfather. It sucked; the film epic. Most Hitchcock films made from second rate novels. My favorite novel of the time I read Dune was Catch-22. Hugely disappointed with the film. It has grown on me in time. Give Dune the film some time. It will grow on you.

Charles Dance or Jeremy Irons should have been cast for the role of Shaddam IV
